Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When vaulting, how many attempts (running approaches) are allowed to successfully complete one or both vaults?

Answer: three

A "balk" (an approach that does not touch the springboard or table) is considered an attempt. When a gymnast runs and touches the springboard or table, even though she doesn't go over the table, this action is considered a vault and scored a zero.
2. In some higher level competitions, the gymnast must "flash" the judges the vault she will be doing. If the gymnast subsequently performs a different vault, what action do the judges take?

Answer: Score the vault performed, disregarding the vault "flashed."

3. When performing a beam routine, the athletes leotard touches the beam during a beam straddle. What action do the judges take?

Answer: None at all.

Actually, it is required the the athletes leotard touch the beam sometime during the performance of the routine, so the correct action by the judges is to score the routine normally.
4. In an optional beam routine, what are the only parts of the body, that the gymnast is allowed to touch the beam with?

Answer: There are no restrictions.

5. What is the start value for a level 9 bar routine, prior to the judges awarding bonus points for difficult elements, and deducting points for missing elements?

Answer: 9.7

All optional gymnastics bar routines have a 10.0 start value except for level 9, which starts at 9.7, and level 10 which starts at 9.5. The gymnast must perform difficult elements during the routine in order to raise the start value to 10.0.
