Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Group A: France, who had won the previous tournament, got eliminated - without scoring a goal and without winning a point.

Answer: False

The draw (0-0) against Uruguay in their second game provided the French with one point. So, despite of losing 0-1 against Senegal in their opening match and 0-2 vs. Denmark in their last match, they didn't leave the championship pointless, though they did leave without scoring.
2. Group A: Senegal and Uruguay made us witness a remarkable match that ended with an even result (three of the six group A games ended in a draw). What was it?

Answer: 3-3

Senegal was leading 3-0 at half time, but the precise kicks of Morales, Forlan and Recoba (a goal from penalty) earned Uruguay the point. However, this wasn't very helpful to them, as they finished 3rd behind Denmark and Senegal and did not progress past the group stage.
3. Group B: The Spanish finished first after winning all of their games. Paraguay and South Africa finished equal second with 4 points each. Who progressed to the next stage and why?

Answer: Paraguay - they scored more goals

The direct match Paraguay vs. South Africa ended 2-2. South Africa won against Slovenia (1-0) and lost their clash with Spain (2-3). So their goal difference was 5-5. Paraguay were defeated by Spain (3-1 for the Iberians), but won with the same result against Slovenia. Having scored and conceded the same amount of goals - 6 of each - the South Americans qualified for the next round thanks to the fact that they scored a goal more than South Africa.
4. Group C: What was the result Brazil vs. Costa Rica?

Answer: 5-2 Brazil

Ronaldo (twice), Edmilson, Rivaldo and Junior were precise for Brazil, with Wanchope and Gomez making the match more interesting to watch (in terms of keeping the neutral spectators' interest) as there was a moment in which the Brazilians were only leading 3-2.
5. Group D: The hosts from South Korea won the first place with 7 pts. Who was second?

Answer: USA

The States made it to the next round winning 4 points in their group. Their results were:
3-2 against Portugal
1-1 against South Korea
1-3 against Poland
Portugal and Poland finished with 3 pts each.
6. Group E: How many goals did Germany score in the match with Saudi Arabia?

Answer: 8

A hat-trick by Klose, "escorted" by fine kicks by Ballack, Jancker, Linke, Bierhoff and Schneider helped the Germans to achieve this amazing result. It was their biggest win at a World Cup Finals tournamnet (previous best was 6-0 vs. Mexico at Argentina 1978).
7. Group F: England and Sweden finished equal first in the group with 5 pts each. Both squads progressed to the next round but who topped the group and why?

Answer: Sweden scoring more goals

England vs. Sweden (the first game of the group) had finished a 1-1 draw. The Scandinavians won their game vs. Nigeria 2-1, and qualified after another deuce against Argentina (again 1-1). England were victorious 1-0 against the South Americans, but 0-0 in their last group match with Nigeria was the reason the English had to settle for second place in this group.
8. Group G: Which player equalised for Italy in their final group match vs. Mexico with his accurate kick in the 85th minute?

Answer: Alessandro Del Piero

For some time it seemed that Italy was about to get eliminated as they fell behind 1-0 in the 34th minute, while the 0-0 draw in their game versus Ecuador guaranteed a place in the Round of 16 for Croatia. However, both clashes took different direction during the second half. Del Piero made it 1-1 for Italy and Edison Mendez scored for Ecuador. So, Italy qualified and the Croats had to go back home.
9. Group H was topped by the co-hosts Japan. Belgium also found a place in the knockout stage after a victory over Russia in their third and final group match. How did the game end?

Answer: 3-2 Belgium

Johan Walem, Wesley Sonck and Marc Wilmots helped the Belgian team with their goals. Vladimir Beschastnykh and Dmitri Sychev scored for Russia.
10. Round of 16: Germany won in a dramatic game vs. Paraguay. Who calmed the spirits in the German squad with his precise kick in the 88th minute?

Answer: Oliver Neuville

Jeremies was chosen Man of The Match but, yes, it was Neuville who scored the goal of victory. Roberto Acuña from the Paraguayan team was expelled four minutes later in the 92nd minute (the 2nd minute of injury time, aka time added-on) after receiving a second yellow (and therefore) a red card.
11. Ireland lost their Round of 16 match vs. Spain in a penalty shoot-out (it finished 1-1 aet, after Ireland had equalised in the last minute of regular time). Who scored the last penalty for Spain (the penalty which put an end to Ireland's participation in the tourney)?

Answer: Gaizka Mendieta

The count before Mendieta's penalty was 2-2. Hierro and Baraja had scored for Spain - Robbie Keane and Finnan for Ireland. But the Irish had no more kicks, since Holland, Connolly and Kilbane had already performed (and missed) theirs. Juanfran and Valeron were also ineffective for the Southern Europeans, but they had one penalty left to accomplish - Mendieta's. The rest is history.
12. England progressed from the group stage and defeated Denmark 3-0 in the second round (Round of 16). Michael Owen and Emile Heskey gave their contribution to the England's success but which defender scored England's first goal in this game?

Answer: Rio Ferdinand

England won after Ferdinand (5th minute), Owen (22nd) and Heskey (44th) all made Danish goalkeeper Thomas Sørensen's life harder this day.
13. Senegal became one of the pleasant surprises for the neutral spectators of this joust, but the Round of 16 match against Sweden turned into a nightmare for the Northern Europeans. What was the final result in this game?

Answer: 2-1 Senegal

Henrik Larsson helped the Swedish take the lead. Henri Camara made it even. The game went into extra time, in which Camara scored once more. Sweden was eliminated. Senegal were through to the quarter-finals. Camara was elected Man of The Match.
14. Quarter-finals: Which Brazilian player was shown a red card in the match vs. England?

Answer: Ronaldinho

Ronaldinho saw the red color after treading on Danny Mills's foot. This happened in the 57th, only 7 minutes after he had given Brazil the 2-1 lead.
15. In the quarter-final between Spain and South Korea (0-0 aet), who missed his penalty in the shoot-out?

Answer: Joaquin Sanchez

It was the 4th spot kick that Joaquin took. Players of both teams were all precise before him. After he missed, Hong Myung-Bo scored South Korea's fifth penalty. Spain was no longer part of the tournament. South Korea progressed to the semis where they were beaten 1-0 by Germany.
16. Quarter-finals: Who was the scorer of Turkey's only goal against Senegal?

Answer: Ilhan Mansiz

Football is a game in which irony of fate often plays an important role. Senegal won 2-1 over Sweden after extra time, and it was also after extra time when they lost 0-1 to Turkey. In the 94th minute the scoreboard displayed Turkey 1-0 Senegal and the African team was knocked out.
17. How many players were given yellow cards in the Germany vs. USA quarter-final clash?

Answer: 7

Kehl and Jeremies received a yellow for Germany. Pope, Berhalter, Mastroeni, Reyna and Lewis were officially warned for the USA. Ballack made it 1-0 for Germany in the 39th minute and this turned out to be the final result.
18. Which were the only two squads to face each other twice during the tournament?

Answer: Brazil and Turkey

In the group stage Brazil won 2-1 (goals by Ronaldo and Rivaldo for the South Americans and by Hasan Sas for Turkey). The semi-final in Saitama ended 1-0 to Brazil (another goal by Ronaldo).
19. Who scored the fastest goal in the tournament?

Answer: Hakan Sukur (Turkey) vs. South Korea

Although Ronaldo's strikes vs. Costa Rica also came early in the match (10th and 13th minute respectively), this cannot compete the Turkish forward's achievement - a goal after just 11 seconds of play - in the play-off for third place.
20. How many goals did the top scorer at this tournament, Ronaldo, score?

Answer: 8

His goals in chronological order:
1. an equalizer versus Turkey in the group stage
2. Brazil's last goal against China
3. Brazil's first two goals in their match with Costa Rica
4. a nice kick in the 87th minute of the Brazil vs. Belgium match at the Round of 16
5. another goal versus the Turkish team in the semi-final
6. both goals for Brazil's victory over Germany in the final match, the first of which he scored after Oliver Kahn had saved Rivaldo's shot
21. Who was the referee of the Spain vs. South Korea quarter-final?

Answer: Gamal Al-Ghandour (Egypt)

No wonder that he wasn't very popular in Spain after this game - he disallowed two "absolutely legal" goals for the country. This was later recognized by FIFA and became one of the main reasons for the increased use of technology in modern football. After this incident Al-Ghandour never refereed a Mondial match again (World Cup match).
22. How many of Miroslav Klose's five goals in this tournament were headers?

Answer: 5

All of his goals in this joust Klose scored with his head. He scored a hat-trick versus Saudi Arabia in the group stage, as well as the goal that gave Germany the lead against Ireland in their second game and another one that assured the team's victory versus Cameroon.
23. Which of the squads that took part in the tournament had two managers that were both listed as head coaches?

Answer: Sweden

These men were Tommy Söderberg and Lars Lagerbäck. The same duo was in charge of the national team for Euro 2004. In 2002, the manager of Denmark was Morten Olsen. His colleagues Nasser Al-Johar and Festus Onigbinde trained Saudi Arabia and Nigeria respectively.
24. In which city was the final held?

Answer: Yokohama, Japan

The event took place at the International Stadium Yokohama. An attendance of 69,029 people was registered. Referee was Pierluigi Collina from Italy.
Brazil won 2-0 against Germany winning their 5th world title: 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002.
25. How many own goals were scored at the 2002 World Cup tournament?

Answer: 3

The players who had this misfortune were Portuguese defender Jorge Costa (vs. USA), Carles Puyol from Spain (the opponent was Paraguay) and the USA player Jeff Agoos (in the match vs. Portugal). So, it turns out two of these own goals were scored in the same game.
