Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Brazilian striker was left out of the World Cup squad because he was prone to losing the ball?

Answer: Romario

Romario's exclusion was a shock to the world, and especially Brazilian supporters. But it proved to be a masterstroke as Scolari's side seemed to play a lot better without him.
2. How many teams in the 2002 World Cup had a French coach?

Answer: 4

They were Roger Lemerre (France), Henri Michel (Tunisia), Bruno Metsu (Senegal) and Philippe Troussier (Japan).
3. How many former World Cup champions did not make it past the 1st round?

Answer: 3

They were France, Argentina and Uruguay. France, the defending champions, were eliminated without scoring a goal.
4. How many countries were competing in the World Cup for the first time?

Answer: 4

They were Senegal, Slovenia, China and Ecuador. After upsetting France 1-0 in the World Cup opener, Senegal continued on and made it to the quarter-finals.
5. Prior to their appearance in 2002 as joint hosts, how many times had South Korea participated in the World Cup Finals?

Answer: 5

1954, 1986, 1990, 1994, and 1998: on each occasion they bowed out in the first round.
6. Which Brazilian defender scored a miraculous scissor-kick goal?

Answer: Edmilson

For me this was the second-best goal of the tournament behind Ronaldinho's free kick against England. But then again I am a mad Brazilian fan!
7. Which team conceded the least goals at the World Cup?

Answer: Argentina

They only conceded two goals in their three matches. But the best defensive record for the whole tournament went to Germany who only conceded three goals in seven matches, two of those in the final against Brazil which they lost 2-0.
8. Who was the captain of the victorious Brazilian side?

Answer: Cafu

This was his third successive World Cup final. A record which will be tough to match.
9. Who was the only team not to make the second round who scored more goals than they conceded?

Answer: Portugal

They scored 6 goals and conceded 4. A draw with 9 men versus Korea (Portugal lost 0-1), would have put them through after Poland upset the USA 3-1.
10. 1930 to 2002: of the teams that have have won the World Cup, which team is the only one not to have won it as hosts?

Answer: Brazil

Surprisingly the team that has won the World Cup a record 5 times has never won it at home. The World Cup has only been held in Brazil once in 1950 when Uruguay beat Brazil 2-1. For your information Italy won at home in 1934, Germany in 1974 and Argentina in 1978.
