Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first match that occurred in the round of 16 was between the host team of Germany and Sweden. Germany played a hard fought match and ended up winning by a score of 2-0. Which player for Germany scored both goals?

Answer: Lukas Podolski

Both goals for Germany were scored by the same player at the 4 minute mark, and then the 12 minute mark. Miroslav Klose shot the ball at the Swedish goalkeeper, but the keeper gave away a rebound, that Podolski was there to put away. The next goal by Podolski was a simple shot outside of the goal-box, that happened to beat the keeper.
2. The second match of the round occurred in the infamous Zentralstadion in Germany between the South American powerhouse, Argentina, and the last North American hope Mexico. In what period of the game did Argentina acquire the goal to gain a well earned 2-1 win?

Answer: 1st half of extra time

The first goal of the game was scored by Rafael Marquez of Mexico at the 6 minute mark. Pardo curved over a free-kick to Borgetti, who then passed it off to Mexico's captain Marquez, who ended up pounding the ball into the open corner of the net. The second goal was scored at the 10-minute mark by Crespo of Argentina. Crespo scored the goal right off of a corner kick.

After a very equal remainder of the match, one of the teams inevitably had to pull ahead, and Argentina happened to be the one. At the 98-minute mark, in the first period of extra time, Rodriguez, let the ball hit him in the stomach.

After he let the ball drop, he fired a powerful shot that Mexico's keeper had no chance of stopping. The Mexicans could not overcome that deficit and were beaten.
3. Another match of the round of 16 was between Italy and the relatively surprising Australian squad. With the Italians down one man, the Australians were able to hold off their opponents and get some great opportunities to score. The Italian goalkeeper stopped every shot on goal. In the end, the Italian squad won by a score of 1-0. What was it about this goal that disheartened the Australian squad?

Answer: It was a penalty shot in second half stoppage time

The penalty shot at the last second of second half of stoppage time shocked the world, and especially the Australian team. After a hard-fought match that could have easily been an Australian victory, a foolish play by Australia's defenseman Neill, conceded a penalty in the box. Totti took the shot for Italy and made no mistake in banking the shot on goal. With respect for the Australian squad's effort, the Italians did not celebrate on the field and stayed quiet.
4. The fourth match of the round of 16 was between Switzerland and Ukraine. The game was a goaltending fiesta as saves were being distributed left and right. After a 0-0 tie through the first and second half, as well as both halves of extra time, a penalty shootout was needed to find a winner. Ukraine claimed victory, but by what score in then penalties?

Answer: 3-0

Ukraine's goalkeeper, Shovkovskyi, was phenomenal in the shootout as was Switzerland's goalie. He stopped a tricky shot from Andrej Shevchenko before conceding three consecutive goals. Ukraine's goalkeeper had an unpredictable movement style that fooled all of the Swiss players, as he made saves on every shot, apart from one by Barnetta which hit the crossbar.
5. One match in round of 16 took place at the Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion, between England and Ecuador. Both were very evenly matched squads that wanted to win. In the end, England triumphed by a magnificent 60th minute goal by a player that sure knows how to 'bend' the ball. Who scored England's game-winning goal?

Answer: David Beckham

After an unnecessary foul by Ecuador near the 11-yard mark, a free kick was awarded to England. As usual, Beckham was sent in to take the shot. With the wall of Ecuadorians standing tall, Beckham fired the ball in an awkward angle that tricked Cristian Mora, Ecuador's goalkeeper.
6. Another round of 16 match was between the Netherlands and Portugal. Like many of the other games, this match was as close as close can be. Only one goal separated the two sides. An inspired goal by Maniche scored at the 23rd minute proved to be the game-winner, but without the assist of another Portuguese player, that goal would have been unlikely to occur. Who assisted Maniche on the goal?

Answer: Pauleta

After the Netherlands had multiple shots on goal, the Portuguese offense decided it was time to get rolling. Deco crossed the ball over the field to Pauleta. Pauleta than passed the ball behind him directly to Maniche, who ran the ball up-field and slammed the ball into the top corner of the net, scoring the game-winner.
7. On June 17, the final match day of the round of 16 occurred, and it was arguably one of the most exciting days. Goals were not difficult to come by and some of the most famous teams were playing. Brazil played the first match of the day against the last standing team from Africa. Which team was this?

Answer: Ghana

The game was pure entertainment. Not only was there fantastic goaltending from both Brazil's Dida, but Ghana's Richard Kingson as well. Goaltending was not enough for Ghana as Brazil won by a score of 3-0. The first goal was scored in the 5th minute by Ronaldo. By scoring the goal, he became the all-time goals leader in FIFA World Cup history.

The next goal occurred at the 46-minute mark, stoppage time of the first half by Adriano. A nice centering attempt gave the ball directly to Adriano, who only needed to tap the ball into the empty side of the net.

The final goal was scored in the 84th minute by Brazil's Ze Roberto. He was on a breakaway and Ghana's goalkeeper was charging at him. Roberto tapped it above the goalkeeper and had the empty net.

Many critics said that if Ghana would have had more shots on goal that didn't miss, they could have had a chance against Brazil.
8. The final match of the round of 16 was between France and Spain, two rivals in both soccer and in the history book as well. France played a crafty game and defeated the Spanish by a score of 3-1. The single Spanish goal occurred on a penalty shot by David Villa on France's goalkeeper. What is the name of France's goalkeeper?

Answer: Fabien Barthez

After he conceded the penalty shot in the 28th minute of the game, Barthez shut the door on the Spanish, stopping 6 well placed shots. France overcame the 1-0 deficit, first in the 41st minute by a bold attack by Ribery that scored a goal. The second goal that gave France the lead was scored in the 83rd minute off a free-kick by Vieira.

The final goal in stoppage time of the second half was scored by Zinedine Zidane. He decided to make a run for the net and score, and his execution was exactly as planned as the nail in the coffin had just been placed with that play.
9. At the end of the round of 16, which player had amassed the most goals in the tournament?

Answer: Miroslav Klose

Miroslav Klose had 4 goals at the end of the round. He scored two goals against Costa Rica in the group stages and then two against Ecuador as well. Ronaldo, Crespo, and Villa all had 3 goals in the tournament at the end of the round of 16, but Villa's goal tally was inevitably halted as his team Spain, lost to France.
10. How many goals had been scored in the round of 16, excluding penalty shootouts after extra time?

Answer: 15

There were 2 goals in the Germany-Sweden game, 3 goals in the Argentina-Mexico game, 1 goal in the Italy-Australia game, 0 goals in the Switzerland-Ukraine game, 1 goal in the England-Ecuador, and the Portugal-Netherlands game, 3 goals in the Brazil-Ghana game, and 4 goals in the France-Spain game. Summed up the grand total would be 15 goals.

The 2006 tournament had some of the fewest goals ever seen compared to the tournaments before it.
