Answer: Quebec Nordiques

When the WHA folded in 1979, the 1977 Avco Cup champs joined the NHL. The "Northmen" first won a Stanley Cup in 1996 as the Colorado Avalanche.
2. What city were the New Jersey Knights located in?

Answer: Cherry Hill

After moving mid-season 1973-74 from New York, the Knights finally found a consistent home for the next three years in San Diego. The team was called the Mariners.
3. Who was the inaguaral Avco Cup winner in 1973?

Answer: New England Whalers

The Whalers, who permanently found a home in Hartford, changed their name to the Hartford Whalers when they joined the NHL in 1979. In 1997, they changed their name again to the Hurricanes when the team moved to North Carolina.
4. What club had the most success in the WHA with 302 all-time wins and 3 championships?

Answer: Winnipeg Jets

The Jets also joined the NHL in 1979, but were not as successful in their new league. The team became the Phoenix Coyotes in 1996.
5. What former NHL star came out of retirement to join the Houston Aeros in 1973?

Answer: Gordie Howe

Mr. Hockey wanted the chance to play with his sons, and the Howe trio led the Aeros to back-to-back titles in 1974 and 1975. Howe rejoined the NHL as a member of Hartford in 1979-1980, and retired after the season, his 32nd full year in the pros.
6. With the WHA flourishing in the mid 70s, the league planned their first expansion in 1974. Who joined the league?

Answer: Phoenix and Indianapolis

The Phoenix Roadrunners folded in 1977, and were eventually brought back as an IHL team. The Indianapolis Racers lasted until the final season, but folded after 25 games.
7. A merger was planned in 1977, but fell through. What two teams were included in this expansion that didn't make it into the NHL?

Answer: Houston & Cincinnati

In 1978, merger plans were drawn up again with New England, Winnipeg, Quebec, and Edmonton admitted into the NHL, rather than these four as well as the Houston Aeros and Cincinnati Stingers. Houston folded in 1978, and Cincinnati folded in 1979.
8. Which team found its greatest successes when they joined the NHL?

Answer: Edmonton Oilers

The Oilers were 0-1 in Avco Cup play, and 4-1 in Stanley Cup Finals from 1972-2003.
9. What two teams existed in 1974-75, after the Los Angeles Sharks were forced to move?

Answer: Michigan & Baltimore

The Michigan Stags played in a small Detroit arena, but left mid-season to become the Baltmore Blades. The Blades finished out the season, but folded afterward.
10. What team existed twice during the original WHA's history?

Answer: Minnesota Fighting Saints

The original Saints existed from 1972-1976, but the Cleveland Crusaders moved to replace them. The major difference was a new color scheme for the new Saints, who only lasted a year.
