Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This American League team in 1924 couldn't be touched in the season. The team had never won a league pennant, and went up against the New York Giants who had already won 12 league pennants. Who was this team that was an underdog, but won the World Series in a heavily-fought battle?

Answer: Washington Senators

The other teams did not exist by name in 1924. The Senators with their 92-62 record, went up against the 93-60 New York Giants. The series had alternating wins with the Giants winning the first game, then the Senators the second, the Giants the third, etc.

The Senators won two in a row by winning game six and then game seven by a score of 4-3. The series was a closely fought battle with the Giants scoring 27 runs to the Senators scoring of 26 runs.
2. This team in 1926 won their first National League pennant and weren't expected to do much against the Yankees who rostered Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri, Bob Meusel, Earle Combs, Herb Pennock, and a host of other future Hall of Fame candidates. The team did however beat those Yankees, four games to three in the World Series. Who was this team?

Answer: St. Louis Cardinals

The Cardinals won the NL flag over the Cincinnati Reds by two games. Rogers Hornsby led the team in his second managerial season as player-manager. In a close series all the way, Jesse Haines took the game seven win for St. Louis. Pete Alexander won the other two games for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals out-hit the Yankees 65-54, and having 31-21 runs. Both teams hit four home runs each in the series.
3. The 1954 World Series finally found a non-New York Yankee series, after the Yankees won five consecutive series titles. Instead, the American League representative was a team that won 14 more games in the season than the NL champions. However, they lost the World Series, four games to none. Who was this American League team that lost it all to the New York Giants?

Answer: Cleveland Indians

The Indians had an all-star cast going 111-43 in the season, led by the bats of Bobby Avila and Larry Doby, and the arms of Bob Lemon and Early Wynn, who both won 23 games in the season. The Giants who went only 97-57, had not won a World Series since 1933.

The 1954 series wasn't close, as the Indians hit only .190 in the series. Four different Giant pitchers won a game each for the title.
4. The Mets began their franchise in 1962. They had seven consecutive losing seasons, and lost 100 games five times. Their eighth season in 1969, which was the first time they won more than 75 games, they found themselves in the World Series. Although being the heavy underdog, they held their AL opponent to only nine runs, and won it all four games to one. Who did they defeat?

Answer: Baltimore Orioles

Amazingly, the Mets hit only 109 home runs during the season, then popped for six in the World Series. Donn Clendenon hit three himself for the series MVP award. Jerry Koosman also won two games for the Mets.
5. Even an earthquake wouldn't wake up the San Francisco Giants in this series, and the Athletics dominated them the whole way. Oakland scored 32 runs compared to the Giants' 14, and Oakland allowed only one run in the first two games before the quake hit in game three. When did this series take place?

Answer: 1989

Game three was scheduled for October 17 at San Francisco when the quake hit. The series was postponed for 10 days. Game three saw the Athletics pick up where they left off, and hit five home runs in the game.
6. The Yankees beat the Dodgers in consecutive World Series in the 1970s. One Yankee player hit five home runs in the 1977 series, then two more in the 1978 series. Who was this?

Answer: Reggie Jackson

Jackson won the series MVP in 1977 for not only hitting five, but by hitting three in one game. He batted .450 in the series, going 9-for-20. In 1978, Reggie was right back at it again. He batted .391 with 8 RBIs, two home runs, and went 9-for-23 this time. He still lost the series MVP to teammate Bucky Dent who had one more hit than Jackson.
7. In what year was the first World Series that hosted two teams from the same city?

Answer: 1906

What an anticipated series which saw the White Sox and Cubs go at it. The unstoppable Cubs won 116 games in the season, setting a Major League record also. It was not to be, as the White Sox put the Cubs down four games to two. It was a pitching series as neither team batted .200 or even hit a home run. The White Sox struck out 28 Cubs, but the Cubs took down 35 White Sox batters.
8. I went to three World Series with the Cardinals. I brought my bat to each one and hit over .400 twice, hit four home runs, and stole 14 bases. Who am I?

Answer: Lou Brock

The others never went to a World Series. Brock saw the big top in 1964, 1967, and 1968. The team was led by the arm of Bob Gibson in each one. Lou retired with a career World Series average of .391. The Cardinals' victims were the Yankees and Red Sox, then they lost to the Tigers.
9. The Yankees came to yet another World Series in their franchise history in 1976. Which team not only defeated them, but skunked them four games to none in that World Series?

Answer: Reds

Both teams had five players who hit home runs in double-figures in the season, but the Reds had the season MVP in Joe Morgan. The Yankees had a meltdown and scored only eight runs against Cincinnati's 22. Both teams threw 16 strikeouts and 12 walks, so the problem was with the bats of the Yankees. The Yankees hit only one home run in the series, off the bat of Jim Mason.
10. This pitcher had career tickets to World Series play. He set records for the most wins, games, innings, strikeouts, walks, hit allowed, and losses. Who is this Hall of Fame pitcher?

Answer: Whitey Ford

Ford went to 11 World Series and started 22 games for the Yankees. While setting some good records, he also set some that he would rather forget. Whitey had a 10-8 series record, and the Yankees won only six series of the eleven with him. Ford was a 1961 Cy Young winner, and also a 1974 Hall of Fame inductee.
