Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 1926 World Series pitted the New York Yankees against the St. Louis Cardinals. It was game seven, with the Cardinals leading in the bottom of the ninth 3-2 with two out. A Yankee player that walked, decided to try and steal second base with slugger Bob Meusel at the plate. The runner was thrown out and the series was over. Who was this player that just wasn't thinking?

Answer: Babe Ruth

With the Cardinals' Hall of Famer Pete Alexander on the mound with two outs, Pete walked Ruth. Even with Meusel at the plate and his 45 home runs in the two previous seasons, Ruth took off for second base. St. Louis catcher Bob O'Farrell cut Ruth down and the series was over.
2. The 2009 World Series between the Phillies and Yankees would see one of those unfortunate records be broken. Who set a record for striking out 13 times in the series?

Answer: Ryan Howard

Howard of the Phillies went 4-for-23 and batted a meager .174 in the series. In 2009, the strikeout record for even a seven-game series was 11. The Yankees won the series in six games, four games to two. Ryan also set a then-season record in 1999 for striking out 199 times in the season.
3. The 1962 season was an interesting one for the fans. They would see the Giants and Dodgers tie at the end of the season, and go to a three-game playoff which the Giants won. In game seven of the World Series with the Yankees, the Giants were down 1-0 in the bottom of the ninth inning, with runners on second and third base with two out. Who hit a line drive smash that was speared by Yankee second baseman Bobby Richardson, ending the game and the series?

Answer: Willie McCovey

The most important person in that three-game playoffs between the Dodgers and Giants was the Giants' head groundskeeper. He kept the infield moist to slow down the Dodger speedster Maury Wills, thus the Giants won the NL pennant. The Giants met the Yankees in the World Series and took it to game seven.

The ninth inning could have changed very easily if not for the play by Richardson. If the ball was not caught, the Giants would have easily scored two runs, clinching the World Series.
4. Which pitcher, later inducted into the Hall of Fame, set a record by pitching a 14-inning complete game in a World Series?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Before becoming a Yankee, Ruth was with the Red Sox as a pitcher from 1914-1919. Ruth and the Red Sox were in the World Series in 1916 against the Brooklyn Robins. In game two, Ruth threw a 14-inning six-hit complete game for the 2-1 win. The Red Sox went on to win the World Series, with Babe's only appearance in 1916.
5. Some fans might remember Yankee Don Larsen's 1956 World Series perfect game. Which team did he throw this against?

Answer: Dodgers

Larsen threw his gem in game five against the Dodgers and pitcher Sal Maglie. Maglie also threw a five-hitter in the 2-0 loss to New York. The Yankees went on to win the series, four games to three.
6. The New York Yankees found their first World Series in 1921. They would lose it to the New York Giants. It was a repeat in 1922, and another loss to the Giants. A repeat indeed it was. Which unfortunate Yankee made the last out in both World Series in 1921 and 1922, putting the brakes on the Yankee seasons?

Answer: Aaron Ward

The infielder Ward might have had to live with these frivolous outs for the rest of his life. He and the Yankees would pacify all this in 1923 again against the Giants, and would win it this time for their first World Series crown. Ward redeemed himself in a big way also, batting .417 with 10 hits and a home run. Aaron retired in 1928 after 12 seasons.
7. Who was the first player in history to hit three home runs in one World Series game, and do it on two occasions?

Answer: Babe Ruth

The Babe hit three against the Cardinals in game three of the 1926 series. He would hit another in game seven, but would lose the series to the Cardinals. Ruth struck again in 1928 against the same Cardinals. He hit three big ones in game four, and that was all the series lasted.
8. The first walk-off series-winning RBI happened in 1912. Who hit this sacrifice fly to score the winning run and end the series with a victory for the Red Sox?

Answer: Larry Gardner

The 1912 World Series was the first that the Red Sox went to by name, and they met the New York Giants. In the final game, Gardner came to bat with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning. Up against future Hall of Fame Giant Christy Mathewson, Gardner sacrifice flied to right field which scored Steve Yerkes on an unearned run.

The Red Sox won the series four games to three. The others listed weren't born yet.
9. Which of these pitchers retired after starting 22 World Series games?

Answer: Whitey Ford

Ford set many World Series marks, including his 22 starts. Whitey went to 11 World Series with the Yankees, going 10-8 from the mound. The Yankees won six of those World Series. He also set career series records for walks, innings pitched, strikeouts, and others.
10. Which manager was the first to be ejected twice from World Series play?

Answer: Bobby Cox

Cox retired from baseball in 2010 after 29 seasons at the helm. He managed the Blue Jays for four seasons and 25 with the Braves. When he retired, Bobby took home the distinction of being the only manager ejected twice. His first boot came in the 1992 series against Toronto, then again in 1996 against the Yankees. Both ejections were a result of him arguing judgment calls. Cox won five NL pennants including one World Series Championship during his career.
