Answer: Roberto Duran

In the fight known as "The Brawl in Montreal" on June 20, Leonard for whatever reason refused to listen to trainer Angelo Dundee, and fought Duran toe-to-toe. The result was Duran winning the bout. Their third match would be in November. That was the infamous 'No Mas' fight, in which Duran just quit.
2. In 1981, which Major League Baseball pitcher won the Cy Young Award, and in doing so was the first-ever rookie to win it?

Answer: Fernando Valenzuela

Valenzuela was a Los Angeles Dodger. He went 13-7 in the season, which helped the Dodgers to the World Series title over the New York Yankees. Fernando was presented the award on November 11.
3. Which UK long distance runner in 1982 set a world record in the 5000m run, besting the old record by almost six seconds?

Answer: David Moorcroft

Moorcroft ran the 5000m in 13:00.41, taking 5.79 seconds off the record. He ran it at the Bislett Games in Oslo. He had previously won a medal at the 1978 Commonwealth Games and European Athletics Championships. His record stood as a British record for over 25 years.
4. Which cricketing country won the 1983 ICC World Cup?

Answer: India

India defeated West Indies in the final. India had 183, 54.4 overs, while West Indies had 140, 52 overs. India's Mohinder Amarnath won the Player of the Match. There was no Man of the Series award presented in 1983.
5. The world watched the XIV Winter Olympic Games in 1984. Who hosted the Games?

Answer: Sarajevo

East Germany won the most gold medals with nine, but the Soviet Union stood on top of the medal count with 25 total. The host, Yugoslavia finished 14th in the medal count by winning one silver medal.
6. In 1985, the first British golfer in 16 years won the British Open Golf Tournament. Who was this hero?

Answer: Sandy Lyle

Lyle had only one top 10 finish in a major golf tournament when he entered the Open in 1985. Sandy had a three-shot lead going into the final round, and had to hold off Payne Stewart by one stroke to win it. Christy O'Connor Jr who shot a 64 in the first round for a four-shot lead, finished two strokes back.
7. Which soccer country won the 1986 FIFA World Cup for their second cup title?

Answer: Argentina

The others had not yet gone to the finals by 1986. Argentina's first cup was in 1978 in a 3-1 win over the Netherlands. The 1986 cup saw them face West Germany, who was in their second consecutive final. Argentina won 3-2 while France was third and Belgium finished fourth.
8. The 1987 US Open for tennis was held in September. Who defeated Mats Wilander in the men's singles final?

Answer: Ivan Lendl

Lendl's victory was his sixth career grand slam. He defeated Wilander 6-7 (7-9), 6-0, 7-6 (7-4), and 6-4. Martina Navratilova stopped Steffi Graf 7-6 (7-4), 6-1, in the 1987 women's singles final. That was Martina's 46th career grand slam title, and her 11th US Open title.
9. The ice hockey world was shocked in 1988 when which team traded the great Wayne Gretzky to the Los Angeles Kings?

Answer: Edmonton Oilers

Gretzky had played in Edmonton since 1979, and showed no desire to move. His father had known that a trade of some sort was in the works, but kept it from Wayne so he could focus on the 1988 Stanley Cup. The Oilers won the Stanley Cup, then Gretzky found out two hours later.

The Oilers gave up Gretzky, Marty McSorley, and Mike Krushelnyski to the Kings for Jimmy Carson, Martin Gelinas, cash, and the Kings' first-round next draft pick.
10. Which Brazilian driver won the 1989 Indianapolis 500?

Answer: Emerson Fittipaldi

On May 28, Fittipaldi won while driving for Patrick Racing. It was his first taste of the milk, and he would win it again in 1993. His racing career ended when in 1997 he was involved in a crash at Michigan International Speedway. Still going through rehabilitation, he was in a plane that crashed, but made it through that also.
