Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Brooklyn, New York, had Dodger baseball for 28 seasons. Was there ever a NFL team named the Brooklyn Dodgers?

Answer: Yes

The NFL Brooklyn Dodgers existed from 1930-1943. A fairly pathetic football franchise never saw a season with more than eight wins, and they included a 2-12 season in 1931. They changed their name to the Brooklyn Tigers in 1944 and went 0-10. The franchise folded after that horrific season.
2. Pittsburgh had Pirate baseball beginning in 1891. The city of Pittsburgh also had a NFL team named the Pirates.

Answer: True

The NFL Pirates played from 1933 to 1940. In 1941, the franchise changed their name to the Steelers. The Steelers' first season left them with a 1-9-1 record. The first double-digit winning season for the Steelers was in 1972 under Chuck Noll, when Terry Bradshaw and Franco Harris led the team to a 11-3 record.
3. The city of Detroit welcomed Tiger baseball with the newly formed American League in 1901. Was there ever a Detroit Tiger pro football team?

Answer: Yes

The football Tiger franchise existed for only one season in 1921. The Tigers only scored in two of their seven games, ending the season and their franchise with a 1-5-1 record.
4. In 1913, the city of New York embraced the new New York Yankees. Did New York also have a New York Yankee football club?

Answer: Yes

With probably the greatest team in baseball history in 1927, New York also presented their New York Yankees to football fans. Their team only lasted for two seasons from 1927-1928. The team went 7-8-1 and 4-8-1 respectively.
5. Cincinnati had the Red Stockings from 1882-1889, and in 1890 this baseball team became the Reds. Cincinnati also had the NFL Cincinnati Reds?

Answer: Yes

In an eighth place finish for the baseball Reds in 1933 and 1934, the fans also saw their football Reds go 3-6-1 and 0-8-1. In 1934, the Reds scored only 10 points in their entire season before folding the franchise.
6. Cleveland Indians baseball began with the new American League in 1901. The city of Cleveland also had a NFL team named the Indians.

Answer: True

In 1931, the Cleveland baseball fans enjoyed the pitching of Wes Ferrell and Willis Hudlin, while their football fans watched the NFL Indians in their only season of existence. They went 2-8 and were shutout four times.
7. The St. Louis Cardinals had some great baseball players including Rogers Hornsby, Dizzy Dean, and Albert Pujols, to name a few. St. Louis also had a NFL team named the Cardinals.

Answer: True

The NFL franchise began as the Chicago Cardinals in 1920. The franchise moved to St. Louis in 1960. In that season, the team was led by quarterback John Roach, who threw 19 interceptions and led them to a 6-5-1 record. The franchise moved again after the 1987 season to Arizona, being named the Phoenix Cardinals. They later changed their name to the Arizona Cardinals.
8. The fans of Washington cheered for one of baseball's greatest, Walter Johnson, in 1921. They also had a Washington Senator football team.

Answer: True

The Washington Senators football team existed for almost one season, and didn't even finish the season before they folded. In 1921, the Senators had a 1-2 record. They lost to the Canton Bulldogs and the Cleveland Tigers.
9. In 1890, Buffalo, New York, watched their Bisons of the American Association play baseball. It included Connie Mack (50 season manager of the Philadelphia Athletics) and outfielder Dummy Hoy. The city of Buffalo also had a pro football team named the Bisons.

Answer: True

From 1920-1929, the city of Buffalo had a football franchise under three names. From 1920-1923, the team was called the Buffalo All-Americans. From 1924-1929, except for 1926, they were the Buffalo Bisons. In 1926, the franchise was named the Buffalo Rangers. The franchise folded after the 1929 season.
10. From 1897-1899, Louisville, Kentucky, enjoyed pro baseball with the likes of Honus Wagner on the Louisville Colonels. There was also a Louisville Colonel football team.

Answer: True

The baseball Louisville Colonels went defunct after the 1899 season, and most of their great players were signed on with the Pittsburgh Pirates, who then began to dominate the National League, and won the next three National League pennants. The Louisville Colonel football team existed only in 1926.

The team lasted only four games in the season and went 0-4. They were shutout in all four games.
