Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Yankee Stadium opened on April 18, 1923, Babe Ruth fittingly hit the first home run ever in the stadium, since it was the "House That Ruth Built". Bob Shawkey benefited from the home run as he was the winning pitcher by a four to one score. Which of their American League rivals did the Yankees beat that day?

Answer: Boston Red Sox

The Yankees beat the BoSox 4 to 1, and the curse of the Bambino which was only in it's fourth year was in full swing. The Yankees went on to win their first World Series title that year. It would be another 81 years until the curse was finally ended.
2. In the fifth game of the 1976 AL Championship Series Chris Chambliss led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a home run to right field to give the Yankees a 7-6 victory and propel them to their first World Series appearance in 12 years. Which Kansas City Royals pitcher served up the pennant winning blast?

Answer: Mark Littell

The ninth inning heroics off Littell was the second homer in the series for Chambliss. It was needed because George Brett had connected for a game-tying home run of his own in the top of the eighth. Dick Tidrow won the game in relief for the Yankees.
3. Aaron Boone led off the bottom of the 11th inning of game seven of the 2003 AL Championship Series, with his own pennant-winning home run as the Yankees beat the Red Sox yet again for another trip to the Fall Classic. Which Red Sox pitcher delivered the fateful pitch?

Answer: Tim Wakefield

Boone will always be remembered fondly by Yankee fans for the shot off Wakefield. A midseason trade brought Boone to the Bronx in 2003, and he certainly paid huge dividends for the Bombers.
4. Bucky Dent added to the Yankees' torture of Red Sox Nation in 1978, when he hit a three-run home run off Mike Torrez in the one game playoff to determine the AL East title. The Dent home run gave the Yankees a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh inning. Which two other Yankees were on base when Bucky went deep over the Green Monster?

Answer: Roy White and Chris Chambliss

Bucky Dent drove in both Chambliss and White, both of whom and singled earlier in the inning. After Dent had fouled a pitch off his foot, on deck batter Mickey Rivers pointed out to Bucky that his bat had a crack in it. Stepping back into the box with a bat he borrowed from Rivers, the next pitch sailed over the Monster into the netting and cemented Bucky's place in Yankee lore.
5. Reggie Jackson hit five home runs during the 1977 World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, including three dramatic shots in game six that gave the Yankees a four games to two series win. It was the first Yankees World Championship since 1962. Which Dodger starting pitcher gave up the first of the three home runs in game six, and took the loss in the deciding game?

Answer: Burt Hooton

Burt "Happy" Hooton was probably not real happy after Reggie connected in the bottom of the fourth for a two-run home run that put the Yankees ahead to stay 4-3 on their way to an eventual 8-3 victory. Elias Sosa gave up home run number two in the bottom of the fifth, and Charlie Hough served up number three in the bottom of the eighth. Reggie tied Babe Ruth's World Series record of three home runs in a single game.
6. Roger Maris did the unthinkable in 1961 when he broke Babe Ruth's record of 60 home runs in a single season when he hit 61, with the record-breaker coming on the final day of the season. Which of the Yankees announcers just happen to be doing play by play in the bottom of the fourth, and got the chance to call the historic home run off the Red Sox's Tracy Stallard?

Answer: Phil Rizzuto

The Scooter lucked out and called the record breaking shot. With his trademark, "Holy Cow", Phil's excitement really gave that moment the drama it deserved. Maris had always been one of the AL's most underrated all-around players and finally got some credit winning the AL MVP in both 1960 and 1961.
7. In the 1932 World Series, Babe Ruth made baseball history by hitting two home runs in game three against the Cubs. The more historic of the two home runs was the first one, which some people believe Babe called. Legend has it that he pointed to the right field bleachers in Wrigley Field right before the pitch was delivered. Which of the Cubs's pitchers gave up the "called shot" to the Babe?

Answer: Charlie Root

Charley Root, who happened to be an outstanding pitcher with 201 lifetime wins, will always be remembered as the pitcher who gave up the "called shot". The 1932 World Series was relatively uneventful besides the famous home run as the Yankees crushed the Cubs in four straight and scored 37 runs and hit .313 for the series.
8. Lou Gehrig was the first Yankee player to ever hit four home runs in a single game. He turned the trick on June 3, 1932, as the Yankees won 20 to 13. Babe Ruth, Tony Lazzeri, and Earle Combs also hit home runs that day for the Bombers. Which American League rival did the Iron Horse complete this feat against?

Answer: Philadelphia Athletics

The Athletics were no slouches themselves in 1932 as they finished second to the Yankees with 94 wins. Their line-up featured three Hall of Famers with Al Simmons, Mickey Cochrane, and Jimmie Foxx. The four home runs by Lou were the first time the feat had been accomplished in AL, and the first time in Major League baseball. Sadly, Gehrig passed away almost nine years to the day of the great feat on June 2, 1941, at the age of only 37.
9. Joe DiMaggio was certainly one of the most feared sluggers in Yankee history. The Yankee Clipper ended his brief 13-year career with 361 lifetime home runs. He retired at age 36 in 1951, and he missed three years (1943-1945) while in the military, or who knows what type of numbers he could have put up. His home run to strikeout ratio was the best in his era of players with at least 200 home runs. How many strikeouts did Joltin Joe end his career with?

Answer: 369

The amazing DiMaggio ended his brilliant career with only eight more career strikeouts than home runs. Most sluggers end their careers closer to a three to one ratio, but Joe was almost an exact one to one ratio. Teammate Yogi Berra was another Yankee that hit 358 home runs, and only had 414 strikeouts.
10. After Roger Maris led the American League in home runs in 1961 with his record breaking 61, only one other Yankee player won the AL home run title during the remaining decade of the 1960s, and through out the entire 1970s. Which player won his home run title with the Yankees with a total of 32 dingers during this stretch?

Answer: Graig Nettles

Nettles won the AL home run crown in 1976 with 32. He had an even bigger year in 1977 when connected for 37 home runs, but that wasn't enough as Jim Rice connected for 39 for the Red Sox. Nettles ended his Yankee career in 1983 with 250 home runs, and retired from baseball after the 1988 season with 390.
11. During games four and five of the 2001 World Series, the Yankees hit a pair of two-out two run home runs off Arizona closer Byung-Hyun Kim in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the score. Eventually, the Yankees went on to win both the games in extra innings. Which two Yankee players hit the game-tying home runs?

Answer: Tino Martinez and Scott Brosius

With the 2001 World Series taking place in New York City barely more than one month after the 9/11 tragedy, the city was looking for a boost. Brosius and Martinez delivered in a big way for both the Yankees and the people of New York.
12. When Lou Gehrig was forced to retire with ALS early in the 1939 season at the age of only 35, he left the Yankees with 493 career home runs. At the time of his retirement, what place did Lou Gehrig hold on baseball's all-time career home run list?

Answer: Second

Only former teammate Babe Ruth and his 714 home runs were ahead of Lou when he was forced to retire. The following season in 1940, Jimmie Foxx passed Lou and then in 1945, Mel Ott knocked Lou back to fourth place. It would be another 15 years before Ted Williams passed Lou in 1960 to knock him to fifth. Not bad for a guy forced out of the game so early.
13. In 2006, Alex Rodriguez became only the third Yankee third baseman to hit at least 100 career home runs while playing the hot corner for the Bombers. He joined Graig Nettles and which other third baseman on this exclusive list?

Answer: Mike Pagliarulo

Even though he only played with the Yankees for six seasons, "Pags" was able to accumulate 105 long balls. His two big seasons were 1986 and 1987 when he totaled 28 and 32 home runs. His career .229 batting average, however, may have led to his ticket out of the Bronx.
14. The Yankees lost the 1976 World Series to the Reds in a four-game sweep. One of the reasons for the sweep was that they were only able to muster a single home run during the entire series. Which relatively weak hitting player was the only Yankee to homer during the 1976 World Series?

Answer: Jim Mason

Mason was a .203 lifetime batter and accounted for only 12 home runs and 114 RBIs over a nine-year career. However, in his only World Series at-bat, he hit a home run for a lifetime memory.
15. In game five of the 1956 World Series, Don Larsen pitched the first perfect game in World Series history. The Yankees beat the Dodgers 2-0. Which Yankee Hall of Famer hit a solo home run off Sal Maglie in the bottom of the fourth, to put the Yankees ahead for good?

Answer: Mickey Mantle

The Mick provided Larsen with all the offense that he would need for the day, as Larsen cruised only going to a three ball count on one batter. Mick also helped out with the defensive gem of the day when he made a back handed running catch in the left center field gap to protect the perfect game.
