Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the losing pitcher in the 1904 one game play-off to decide whether the Yanks (then Highlanders) or Sox (then Pilgrims) would take the pennant?

Answer: Jack Chesbro

This is one of the few times that the Red Sox beat the Yankees in a crucial situation. Chesbro, the Highlander pitcher, threw a wild pitch to allow the game winning run to score, giving the Boston Pilgrims the Pennant. Cy Young started for the Pilgrims. The Pilgrims went on to win their first World Series.
2. What was the name of the Red Sox owner who sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees in 1920?

Answer: Harry Frazee

Harry Frazee sold Ruth to the Yankees on January 3, 1920. You can see the check at the Baseball Hall of Fame. Since then, the Sox won a grand total of zero World Series in the 20th century, while the Yanks won 25. This is called the, "Curse of the Bambino".
3. In 1941, two of baseball's all-time bests, Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams had career years. DiMaggio compiled a 56-game hit streak for the Yankees. Which was Red Sox player Ted Williams' batting average that year?

Answer: .406

Joe DiMaggio won MVP that year. Of course, there isn't a single Red Sox fan who doesn't think Williams should've won the prestigious award. Even as a Yankee fan, I think a .406 batting average is a better achievement than a 56-game hit streak.
4. Who was the pitcher who surrendered the famous Bucky Dent home run to give the Yanks the lead for good in the 1978 one game playoff?

Answer: Mike Torrez

Dent was the player who one would least expect to hit a home run in this situation. But, he clobbered a Torrez fastball far over the head of Sox leftfielder Carl Yastzremski to give the Yanks the lead for good. This, like many other Boston heartbreakers, was often blamed on the Curse of the Bambino.
5. In the 20th Century, how many times have the Red Sox (by name) made it to the World Series, only to come away empty-handed?

Answer: 4

One of the most famous instances is 1986, when the Sox had to make 1 more out on defense to win the Series, and they blew it on an error. Other years were 1946, 1967, and 1975.
6. The first time the Yankees and Red Sox met in the postseason was the 1999 American League Championship Series. How many games did it take for the Yankees to knock off the Sox?

Answer: 5

Nomar Garciaparra, a usually solid glove, made 3 errors in the '99 ALCS. Although you can blame the Sox' defeat on the Curse all you want, a 4 to 1 win in games is an easy series. But this was only a taste of Yankee-Red Sox postseason magic.
7. Who was the Yankee batter that Pedro Martinez hit in Game 3 of the 2003 ALCS, which was the first ingredient to an eventual brawl?

Answer: Karim Garcia

Although replays suggest that the ball hit Garcia's bat, and not the top of his back as originally thought, Garcia was pretty upset. Later that inning, Garcia slid hard into 2B Todd Walker, who didn't fight back. This game featured a bench and bullpen clearing brawl, in which Sox hurler Pedro Martinez shoved 70+ year old Yankee bench coach Don Zimmer to the ground via Zimmmer's head.
8. Which Red Sox pitcher surrendered the Game 7 extra-inning walkoff home run to Aaron Boone, giving the Yankees the pennant yet again?

Answer: Tim Wakefield

Wow. What better a way to cap an amazing ALCS? Yankee Aaron Boone hit the first pitch of the inning from Wakefield to deep left field for another drama-filled Yankee pennant. This time, it might have been the Curse. Down in the 8th, the Yankees rallied to force extra innings.
9. In the 1970s, Yankee Thurman Munson had a personal vendetta with which catcher for the Red Sox, whom he often brawled with?

Answer: Carlton Fisk

Time after time, one of the two would smash into the other at home plate, trying to score, igniting frequent Yankee-Red Sox brawls. This was far more than a rivalry, as these two hated each other.
10. In the 2004 ALCS, the Red Sox finally beat the Yankees in a great series that went the full 7 games. Who was named the ALCS MVP?

Answer: David Ortiz

This was a rollercoaster series for both teams. The Yankees grabbed a 3-0 game lead after the first few games, only to become the first team ever to surrender that lead and lose in 7 games. David Ortiz was named MVP, but it very well could have gone to pitcher Curt Schilling, who pitched an inspirational Game 6 with an injured ankle which was visibly bleeding while he pitched.
