Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This US golfer came to the 18th hole of the 2009 Open Championship, needing to hole an eight-foot putt for victory. Had he done so he would have had Open wins 34 years apart and, by a mere 11 years, have been the oldest winner of a major. Who was this golfer?

Answer: Tom Watson

Prior to that point, the oldest winner of a major was Julius Boros who was 48 when he won the 1968 US PGA Championship. Watson, sadly, missed the putt and lost the resultant playoff to Stewart Cink. The 2008 Open Championship had also threatened to provide a senior winner. Greg Norman, 53, led after three rounds, but fell away in the final round to finish third.
2. In which sport did Jamie Moyer pitch up a champion team in 2008 at the age of 45?

Answer: Baseball

Pitcher Jamie Moyer was part of the Philadelphia Phillies team that won the 2008 World Series, 4-1 against the Tampa Bay Rays. The age of 45 was 14 years short of 59, which was the age of Satchel Paige when he played his final MLB game in 1965.
3. This legendary soccer player played at the top level of English football between 1932 and 1965. He won the inaugural European Footballer of the Year award in 1956 at the age of 41, and was still playing competitive soccer aged 70. Which person is this?

Answer: Sir Stanley Matthews

Matthews was also named English Footballer of the Year in 1948 and 1963, and was knighted before he retired. Despite his reputation, the only club trophies that he ever won were the Second Division title with Stoke City in 1933 and 1963, and the FA Cup with Blackpool in 1953 (aka the Matthews Final).
4. Luigi Fagioli in Formula One and Al Unser Sr in IndyCar racing are both noted for winning races at an advanced age. Fagioli won the 1951 French Grand Prix, whilst Unser won the 1987 Indianapolis 500. Unser was older than Fagioli at the time of his triumph.

Answer: False

Fagioli was 53 and Unser was 47. Sadly, Fagioli died the following year from injuries sustained in practice. Fagioli set a record for oldest winner of a Formula One Grand Prix.
5. Most tennis players can only dream of winning a Grand Slam event, so to do it 59 times does seem excessively greedy. Which tennis great partnered Bob Bryan at the 2006 US Open to win title number 59 at the age of 49?

Answer: Martina Navratilova

Navratilova's stats are truly amazing. Those 59 grand slam titles break down as 18 singles (including six consecutively at Wimbledon), 31 doubles and 10 mixed doubles. Her debut grand slam win came in the 1975 French Open giving a more than 31-year span between her first and last grand slam titles.
6. Two brothers dominated snooker and billiards for a large part of the 20th century. Their world title wins stretch from 1927 to 1981. What is the surname that they share with another (unrelated) snooker world champion?

Answer: Davis

Joe Davis' many titles include the inaugural snooker World Championship in 1927. He then proceeded to win it every year until 1940 when it was suspended due to World War II. He won the next World Championship to be played in 1946 before retiring undefeated. Brother Fred was 12 years younger than Joe.

He won eight World Snooker Championships, and the 1980 and 1981 World Billiards Championships, the latter at the age of 67. They are not related to Steve Davis who won the snooker World Championship six times between 1981 and 1989.
7. Cricketer James Southerton made his Test debut for England against Australia in 1877. He was just 247 days short of his 50th birthday. Why had he never previously played Test cricket for England?

Answer: This was the world's first-ever Test match

This was indeed the first-ever official Test match which took place between March 15th and 19th 1877 in Melbourne, Australia. Southerton took three wickets and scored seven runs. He also set a record for being the first Test cricketer to die, in 1880.
8. Which heavyweight boxer, who gave all six of his sons the same name as himself, won the WBA title in 1973, lost it to Muhammad Ali in 1974, and finally regained it against Michael Moorer in 1994?

Answer: George Foreman

Foreman fought on for another three years and won three more fights. His final professional bout took place in November 1997, against Shannon Briggs at the age of 48. His 1974 defeat against Ali was the famous "Rumble in the Jungle" match-up in Zaire.
9. Which American jockey won the 1955 Kentucky Derby riding Swaps, and repeated the feat 31 years later on Ferdinand in 1986?

Answer: Bill "Willie" Shoemaker

Shoemaker also partnered Ferdinand to victory in the 1987 Breeders Cup Classic at the age of 56. He competed in over 40,000 races during his career, and rode nearly 9000 winners. Englishman Lester Piggott had racing longevity that is just as impressive. His classic wins stretch from the English Derby in 1954 to the 1992 2000 Guineas.
10. Here is 72 year-old Oscar Swahn. At the 1920 Antwerp Olympics, Swahn became the oldest competitor to win an Olympic medal. In which sport was he competing?

Answer: Shooting

Swahn, who hailed from Sweden, took a silver medal from the team double-shot running deer event. Eight years previously at the Stockholm Olympics, he had won a gold medal in the team single-shot running deer event at the age of 64. Both occasions were opportunities for a bit of father-son bonding as his son was also part of the medal winning teams.
