Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This Detroit Tiger was part of a brawl with only four games left in the 2008 season. He was ejected and suspended for the rest of the season, leaving him stuck on 499 career home runs. Who was this?

Answer: Gary Sheffield

The others were already retired for at least five seasons. Sheffield initiated the fight, then brawl against the Cleveland Indians after he felt the pitcher threw too close to him. Sheffield did come back in 2009, but as a Met to hit 10 home runs, giving him 509 in his career before he retired.
2. Who was the first player in the 2000s to be ejected from 15 games?

Answer: Milton Bradley

The other were already retired. Like a leaking radiator, Bradley had cooling system problems in his career. In his first 10 seasons, Milton played for seven teams while going to anger-management therapy many times. Bradley's most famous flare up was with the Padres in 2007, when after hitting a single, started going at with first base umpire Mike Winters. Winters then ejected Bradley.

In the fracas, and after half the Padre bench emptied, Bradley tore his ACL and missed the rest of the season.
3. Who was the first person ever ejected from a World Series game?

Answer: Hughie Jennings

The others never played in a World Series. Jennings was in his 14th season of baseball when he and the Tigers went to the World Series in 1907 against the Cubs. Jennings played in only one game in the season and was considered a player-manager at the time.

He took his fury out on the umpire after his player was called out stealing. Hughie would not let go of his arguing, therefore was ejected.
4. Which Florida Marlins catcher was ejected three times from a game in a two-week span in 2003?

Answer: Ivan Rodriguez

The others never played for the Marlins. The catcher changed with age, and took offense to close pitches when he was batting. In 2008 as a New York Yankee, Pudge also incited a bench-clearing brawl against the Angels after taking a swing at Torii Hunter during the game.
5. In the 1985 World Series, which St. Louis pitcher was ejected from game seven, resulting in his manager being ejected also?

Answer: Joaquin Andujar

The others were already retired. Andujar was well known for losing his cool during his career. It was game seven against the Royals on October 27. Andujar had just come in relief, faced two batters, then started jawing at home plate umpire Don Denkinger. Denkinger tossed Andujar, then the fur began to fly from Cardinal manager Whitey Herzog.

He was sent home too, and so were the Cardinals in a 11-0 game loss, and a four games to three World Series loss to the Royals.
6. Which 2008 Cy Young Award winner was ejected from his second Spring Training game in 2010?

Answer: Cliff Lee

The others were not active Major League players at the time. In the third inning against the Diamondbacks, the Phillies' Lee threw a ball over the head of batter Chris Snyder. After a stare-down between the two, words were exchanged and home plate umpire Brian Knight ejected Lee. Both benches and bullpens cleared, converged on the mound, but nobody took a swing at anyone.
7. Which Dominican player and former 1987 AL MVP was ejected from 12 games in 13 Major League seasons?

Answer: George Bell

The others were all retired and all born in Mississippi. Bell was born in San Pedro de Macoris, D.R. He played with the Blue Jays in the 1980s. After a Minor League accident when George was hit in the head with a pitch and broke his jaw, he took it personally after that, any time a pitcher came in close.
8. "The Pine Tar Game" in 1985 matched up the Royals and Yankees. Whose home run was negated by the home plate umpire, then was ejected from the game for charging at, swearing, bumping, spitting, and whichever else he did at the umpire?

Answer: George Brett

The others were all retired. After Brett hit his home run, Yankee manager Billy Martin immediately went to home plate umpire Tim McClelland and presented his 'ace in the hole'. He pointed out that Brett's pine tar on the bat exceeded the allowable 18 inches from the butt of the handle. Brett charged out of the dugout and the rest is history.

The Royals via manager Dick Howser filed an official protest. After reviewing the protest, American League President Lee MacPhail ruled that the game would be resumed in the ninth inning at a later date, and that Brett would be ejected from playing the continuance.
9. Who was the first person in baseball history that was ejected from 150 games in their career?

Answer: Bobby Cox

This wasn't close. In 2007, Cox broke the record of Giants manager John McGraw when Bobby was tossed for his 132nd time. In 2010, Cox hit the 150-mark, and was in his 29th season at the helm of a team. McGraw, manager of the New York Giants retired from baseball with 131 ejections. Leo 'The Lip' Durocher who managed the Dodgers, Giants, Cubs, and Astros had 124 ejections. Weaver of the Baltimore Orioles had 97 tossings.
10. Which National League player was ejected from a World Series game for his own protection in the 1930s?

Answer: Joe Medwick

The others never went to a World Series in their career, and didn't play in the Majors until three decades later. The Cardinals met the Tigers in the 1934 World Series. In the top of the sixth inning of game seven, Medwick tripled, then allegedly came in spikes-high into third baseman Marv Owen.

A fight ensued but neither player was ejected from the game. In the bottom of the sixth inning when the Cardinals took the field, Detroit fans began throwing everything except the kitchen sink at Medwick. Home plate umpire Harry Geisel ejected Medwick for his own protection, and left the field under heavy escort.

The Cardinals won game seven 11-0, and the series four games to three.
