Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The premise of "1st & Ten" was a professional football franchise, the California Bulls, that was owned by (cringe) a woman. How was it that Diane Barrow came to own the Bulls?

Answer: Divorce settlement

Diane divorced her husband Roger Barrow after she caught him in bed with (cringe) another man.
2. Name the actress who played Diane Barrow.

Answer: Delta Burke

Ms. Burke was virtually an unknown when she broke onto the scene as the star of "1st & Ten". She left the show in the second season, however, and soon went on to network fame starring in the popular sitcom "Designing Women".
3. Head coach of the Bulls was a straight shooting, cigar smoking, unshaven old codger who bled silver and blue. What was the name of this, the original head coach?

Answer: Ernie Denardo

Ernie was played by actor Reid Shelton, who guest starred on an early episode of "Cheers" as a card shark named George Wheeler, who got hustled at a poker game by Coach Ernie Pantusso and Harry the Hat.
4. The original quarterback of the Bulls was the flamboyant veteran Bob Dorsey. Who was Dorsey's holy rolling back-up quarterback?

Answer: Brice Smith

It was never explained why Bob Dorsey did not return after the first season, though it is assumed he retired as he was a grizzled veteran with bad knees. Brice Smith, though, was written out of the script in season-two's training camp when he fell out of a second-story window and tore up his knee. Thus, the Bulls traded for Johnny Valentine (Sam Jones, star of the 1980 movie "Flash Gordon") and sent walk-on Tom Yinessa packing.

A major clash between Valentine and Bulls management, however, caused Diane Barrow to quickly trade him away, and bring back Yinessa, the Cinderella walk-on.
5. Two of the Bulls outstanding offensive linemen were Jethro Snell and Bubba. What was Bubba's last name?

Answer: Kincaid

Bubba Kincaid was once the hero of a Bulls victory when he blocked a field goal attempt with his rear end.
6. A halftime reality break here. Actual professional game footage was used for Bulls broadcasts. What real football franchise "portrayed" the Bulls in said footage?

Answer: Los Angeles Express

"1st & Ten" used old U.S.F.L. footage to give games a realistic edge. This is why the starting quarterbacks, Bob Dorsey and Tom Yinessa, both wore number 14, as it was L.A. Express quarterback Tom Ramsey's number.
7. Alright, for the second-half kickoff, who was the place kicker that joined the Bulls in their second season?

Answer: Zagreb Shkenusky

The place kicker from season-one was a bit character named Jeff Knolowich. In a must-win game against the Boston Bears, Knolowich kicked a game-winning extra point to break a 20-20 tie with no time on the clock. Before the point after attempt, Ernie Denardo pulled Knolowich aside and told him: "You miss this point after, and I kill your children." Standing near by, Dr. Death Krunchner added: "And I'll eat 'em." This episode aired in 1984. Meanwhile, boxing promoter Don King had recently started promoting big money boxing matches on HBO. Mike Tyson, now famous for making similar comments to hype a Don King-promoted heavyweight title bout with Lennox Lewis, made his professional debut in 1985.
8. What was linebacker Leslie Krunchner's infamous nickname?

Answer: Dr. Death

Actor Donald Gibb, who portrayed Dr. Death, also made a guest appearance on "Cheers" as Tiny the Bouncer, who had his feelings hurt when he overheard the gang brainstorming how to fire the big lug. Incidentally, Dr. Death did not like to be called Leslie.
9. Who was the Bulls play-by-play announcer for their first exciting professional football season?

Answer: Fran Tarkenton

A snippet from Fran Tarkenton's opening monologue which kicked off each episode: "The Bulls may not have the prettiest record in the league, but they certainly have the prettiest owner ... Mrs. Diane Barrow."
10. Last but certainly not least, what was the name of Bubba's domineering wife?

Answer: Erlene

Great couples in the history of pop culture ... Rick and Ilsa, Han and Leia ... Bubba and Erlene?! Actor Prince Hughes went on to play another character named Bubba in the 1987 movie "Fatal Beauty" starring Whoopi Goldberg.
