Kate worked out at her apartment when the phone interrupted her exercise. Once she answered, a man on the other line informed her that he was the prime investigator who looked into her mother's murder. Richard went with Kate to support her during this serious, discrete meeting.

After he identified himself as John Raglan, someone shot the detective right before he could provide her the details Kate demanded from him.

Right before John Raglan got shot, he mentioned how he knew her mother well before an unknown assailant killed her. This was when he brought up her first name: Johanna. Kate spent the entire episode trying to rationalize what all just happened in connection with her mother's homicide case.

As the opening credits rolled, Kate's acquaintances from the New York Police Department rushed down as soon as reports came in about shots fired at the coffee shop. After Kate finished her discussion with Roy, during which he pleaded with her to ease back on her mother's investigation, she asked Richard if he was fine, as he was nearly shot and had blood all over his hands due to helping out a wounded victim.

He mentioned to her that he was fine.

Kate sat down in an office at the New York Police Department when Javier gave her surprising news. After the initial investigation into Detective Raglan's murder, they were unable to track down any fingerprints or serious evidence which could locate the killer. Kate mentioned that there was a gentleman named Gary McCallister who she wanted to speak with , as she believed he had a connection to Raglan.

Kate interrogated Vulcan Simmons since she believed he ran a crime ring that involved John Raglan. According to Kate, Mr. Simmons ordered hits on people, like Kate's mother, and had John cover them up with allegations that they were random acts of gang violence.

In Kate's mind, Raglan planned to expose Mr. Simmons' criminal conduct and therefore Simmons orchestrated Raglan's death out of fear that his statement would incriminate him. Simmons then goaded Kate about her mother being trash, which caused her to slam him into the mirror inside the interrogation room. Both Javier and Kevin immediately rushed in to restrain Kate.

In one scene, Richard spoke with Kate about an intricate idea he had in order to access the file on her mother's homicide. He spoke of how he could sneak into Captain Roy Montgomery's office when he went on his usual coffee break. Kate then spoke about how she always believed her mother's death was attributed to a legal case she involved herself in years ago and only now, due to Simmons, felt that it involved her campaign to revitalize her neighborhood.

Javier and Kevin got a lead on where they could snatch the sniper who gunned down Detective Raglan. They busted down a corporate suite located in the Midtown area of Manhattan that could provide them clues as to his/her whereabouts. While there, the two men came upon a bizarre discovery: images of Kate as a young girl.

Kate saw a photo of an alley that her mother took approximately one week before her murder. According to Richard, there used to be a club there where the mafia gathered to orchestrate their murders. An FBI Agent named Bob Armen infiltrated this mob group until they wised up and had him killed. Joe Pulgatti was framed for Armen's murder, therefore John Raglan arrested him. Kate and Richard met up with Joe Pulgatti in prison and he gave both of them details that could help them capture the sniper who took out Raglan.

It was also revealed that Kate's mother, a civil rights attorney, prepared an appeal to try and reverse Joe Pulgatti's homicide conviction.
