The portrayal of Valerie Malone may have come as shock to Tiffani-Amber Thiessen's fans, who were used to see her playing the wholesome girl-next-door Kelly Kapowski on "Saved by the Bell". Tiffani first appeared as Valerie on "90210" in the fifth season's premiere, and though she left the show in the ninth season, she returned for the series finale at the end of season ten. Sometime after her stint on the series, she took her middle name (Amber) out of her official screen name.

In Valerie's first episode on the show, "What I Did on My Summer Vacation and Other Stories", she at first seemed to be an innocent and naive girl. Many references were made to her marijuana use throughout the series. When Jim and Cindy moved to Hong Kong, Brandon finally laid down a rule - "Just not in the house, okay, Val?"

She latched onto Dylan almost immediately, even when she was pretending to be interested in Steve when she was really interested in his money. She was actually kind of good for Dylan; she was there for him when he was heavy into drug use and tried to help him get his life together. She also helped him rescue his sister from the con artists who took all his money.

Valerie began seeing David after his mother almost killed herself. Again, she was good for him. She talked him down when he was depressed, and she was there when he needed someone. Later on in their relationship, he was able to be the same kind of rock for her.

She began seeing Colin immediately after he and Kelly broke up. She bailed him out of jail and tried to help him with his cocaine problem. After he jumped bail and tried to betray her, she had him put back in prison.

After Val came into some money when she helped Dylan and his FBI friend Jonesy rescue both Dylan's money and his sister, she decided she wanted to invest in a business. At this time, Rush and Nat owned the Peach Pit After Dark and Valerie approached Rush, offering to buy him out. Valerie then ran a successful night club for a few years, with David eventually pitching in his money to help.

Valerie met Kenny when Jim Walsh recommended him as an accountant who could help her with the After Dark. Kenny kept saying he would leave his wife, but he didn't. Valerie cooked up a scheme to extort money out of Kenny and this involved pretending she was pregnant. Steve overheard her phone conversation with Kenny, and believed she was pregnant. Steve told Kelly, and Kelly tried to help Valerie, but when Kelly found out she was lying, she was furious. Brandon found out about the whole thing, and gave Val an ultimatum: give Kenny the money back, or get out of the house.

Though they both doubted the other one would actually put any thought into getting a nice gift, they were both ultimately persuaded by the spirit of Christmas, and came through with a lovely journal, each girl giving the other one the same gift. Later on in the season, Valerie stole Kelly's journal from out of her room and used the information in it against her.

In the seventh season finale, "Graduation Day", Valerie was upset because she was lost a lot of her money, because Kelly wanted her kicked out of the Walsh house (and was convincing Brandon), and because her mom was not coming to her graduation. She left a goodbye note for Brandon and went to the same cliff that she had taken David to when he was feeling suicidal and was standing there contemplating jumping. Brandon found the note, and because it mentioned David's name, Brandon called him to ask him what it meant. David knew immediately and Brandon rescued Val, bringing her to the university in time to graduate with everyone else.

Victor Malone's death was originally referred to as a suicide. In a storyline in season five, Valerie and an old boyfriend from Buffalo confessed to Mrs. Malone that Victor had been sexually abusing Valerie, and that Val had gotten her boyfriend to confront him, and this had led to his suicide.

However, in season seven, Valerie confessed to David that she had actually shot her father because of the abuse. The story came out to everyone else in season eight.

In "Ode to Joy", the girls were in the middle of a horribly boring bachelorette party, when Valerie arrived and definitely livened things up! Her wedding gift to Donna was a large box of condoms, and her contribution to the party games involved a poster of a naked David. Interestingly, the uptight Felice Martin won that game.
