Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Lone Ranger" (not the title character)

Answer: Jay Silverheels

Silverheels appeared as the Lone Ranger's native American friend Tonto in over 200 episodes of "The Lone Ranger" between 1949 and 1957, more even than Clayton Moore who played the Ranger himself for most of the series' run. The series involved a Texas Ranger who was the sole survivor of a massacre, who donned a mask and sought to bring villains to justice each week with the help of his friend Tonto and his trusty steed Silver.

Harold J. Smith (1912-1980), who became Jay Silverheels, was born on the Six Nations Reserve near Brantford, Ontario, Canada, and began his acting career in the late 1930s as a stuntman. Movie roles followed, including one in "Key Largo" (1948), before he teamed up with Moore for the TV series and a couple of "Ranger" movies.
2. "T.J. Hooker" (the title character)

Answer: William Shatner

"T.J. Hooker" (1982-86) was a cop show about veteran Sgt. Hooker (Shatner) being teamed up with a rookie partner (Adrian Zmed) and the various criminals and situations they faced each week. Heather Locklear and James Darren also appeared.

William Shatner was born in 1931 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and is possibly best known (at least in some circles) as Captain James T. Kirk of "Star Trek" fame (both TV and the movies). Amongst other credits, he has also appeared in "Third Rock from the Sun", as the Big Giant Head, and as Denny Crane in both "The Practice" and "Boston Legal".
3. "Family Ties" (one of the children)

Answer: Michael J. Fox

Ultra-conservative young Alex P. Keaton (Fox) was often at odds with his liberal ex-hippie parents (Michael Gross, Meredith Baxter) in "Family Ties" (1982-89) and therein was found the comedy of the series. His sisters (Justine Bateman and Tina Yothers) didn't often understand Alex either.

Michael J. Fox was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in 1961, and was thus in his twenties when playing the teen-aged Alex! He made his first television appearance in an episode of the Canadian series "The Beachcombers" in 1973. His movie credits include the "Back to the Future" trilogy (1985, '89, '90) and "Casualties of War" (1989). On television he went on to star in "Spin City" (1996-2001) only to have to give up his role when diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Since that time he has returned to acting, even earning Golden Globe and Emmy nominations.
4. "Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place" (one of the two guys)

Answer: Ryan Reynolds

The two guys were Michael 'Berg' Bergen (Reynolds) and Pete Dunville (Richard Ruccolo). The girl was Sharon Carter (Traylor Howard) and they all shared an apartment in Boston, and hung out at the pizza place. "Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place" ran from 1998-2001 and got its laughs from the situations the cast found themselves in from week to week. Nathan Fillion appeared in a number of episodes as Johnny Donnelly, but not as one of the "two guys" of the title.

Ryan Reynolds was born in 1976 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and although he has appeared in other TV programs, has made his mark mainly in the movies, including "Adventureland" (2009), "The Green Lantern" (2011) and "Deadpool" (2016).
5. "Crossing Jordan" (title character)

Answer: Jill Hennessy

In "Crossing Jordan" (2001-2007) Hennessy played medical examiner Dr. Jordan Cavanaugh, who in addition to her real job dabbled in solving crimes with her ex-detective father (Ken Howard). Miguel Ferrer and Jerry O'Connell also appeared.

Jill Hennessy was born in 1968 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and began acting in the late 1980s. She appeared in nearly 70 episodes of "Law & Order" as Claire Kincaid between 1993 and 1996. She appeared in several episodes of "Madame Secretary" in 2015-16 and some episodes of "Bull" in 2018.
6. "Lost" (a survivor)

Answer: Evangeline Lilly

Evangeline Lilly appeared as Kate Austen in 118 episodes of "Lost" (2004-2010). Not only did Kate survive the crash of Oceanic Flight 815 on the mysterious island where the survivors encountered obstacles such as smoke monsters, polar bears and The Others, she later became one of the Oceanic 6 who managed to escape the island. To describe the plot in any more detail would take more room than I have here, but I can recommend the series if one enjoys both the fantastic and the mysterious.

Nicole Evangeline Lilly was born in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada in 1979 and had appeared in a number of uncredited TV roles before striking it rich with "Lost". Her subsequent career has been largely in the movies, including "The Hurt Locker" (2008) and "Ant-Man and the Wasp" (2018).
7. "How I Met Your Mother" (not the mother)

Answer: Cobie Smulders

Robin Scherbatsky (Smulders) is Canadian, and works as a TV newsperson in New York, where the series is set. The comedy's premise is that Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) is telling his nearly grown children the story of "How I Met Your Mother" (2005-14) in flashback from the mid-2020s. Though Robin is not that titular mother, she and Ted clearly have a connection throughout the series. The rest of the cast included Neil Patrick Harris, Alyson Hannigan and Jason Segel.

Jacoba Francisca Maria "Cobie" Smulders was born in Vancouver, BC, Canada in 1982. She has appeared in "Veritas: The Quest" (2003-2004) and "A Series of Unfortunate Events" (2017) on television, and in movies such as "The Avengers" (2012).
8. "Grey's Anatomy" (an original cast member)

Answer: Sandra Oh

Dr Cristina Yang (Oh) was one of the five original interns to come under the tutelage of Dr Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) in the early days of "Grey's Anatomy", beginning in 2005. Oh appeared in 227 episodes from then until 2014, when Dr Yang moved to Europe. The other original interns at what was then Seattle-Grace Hospital were played by Ellen Pompeo (as Meredith Grey), Katherine Heigl, Justin Chambers and T.R. Knight.

Sandra Miju Oh was born in 1971 in Nepean, Ontario, Canada to Korean parents who had both attended the University of Toronto for post-graduate studies. Her first Golden Globe award was for Supporting Actress in 2006 for "Grey's Anatomy" and her second for Best Actress in a TV Series-Drama for "Killing Eve" in 2019.
9. "Castle" (title character)

Answer: Nathan Fillion

Richard Castle (Fillion) was a best-selling author of crime novels, who used his connections to become a consultant with the New York city police department, solving crimes alongside detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic, another Canadian) and her team. "Castle" (2009-2016) managed to combine humour and a bit of romance with the more dramatic aspects of police work.

Nathan Craig Fillion was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in 1971. His TV credits include "Firefly" (2002-3), "Desperate Housewives" (11 episodes in 2007-8), "Modern Family" (as Rainer Shine, Haley's 'older man') and beginning in 2018 "The Rookie".
10. "FBI" (a special agent)

Answer: Missy Peregrym

"FBI", which debuted in 2018, teamed Special Agent Maggie Bell (Peregrym) with Special Agent Omar 'OA' Zidan (Zeeko Zaki), and together they tackled bombings, snipers and other threats to public security. Jeremy Sisto and Sela Ward also appeared.

Melissa 'Missy' Peregrym was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in 1982. Amongst other credits, she appeared in several episodes of "Heroes" in 2007, and starred in the Canadian series "Rookie Blue" (2010-15).
