Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the episode, when Sayid asked Shannon what she thought of his homemade tent, Shannon replied by asking, "Does it have an _________?"

Answer: Inside

Hint, hint, Sayid.
The episode opens with Shannon on beach giving Vincent a drink of water. While six weeks earlier she would have nothing to do with anyone else-- let alone the dog-- we see by the way she pats and cares for him that Shannon has indeed become a new person on the island.
Sayid approaches and tells Shannon to follow him. He leads her to a makeshift tent and she is touched by his efforts. Before the end of the opening scene, Sayid and Shannon consummate their love in the tent (which, in a typical horror movie, leaves one of them marked for disaster from there on).
Attention is drawn to Sayid's gun, which he removes from his waist band, when he tells Shannon that he carries it because he now has her to protect.
The look on Sayid's face by the closing scene of the episode suggests that, had Sayid not removed the gun at this point, there would have been one more island casualty before it was over...
2. On the other side of the island, while waiting for Mr. Eko to return with Jin and Michael, the tail section survivors managed to rest for an hour before the long journey back. When they finally returned, to whom was this spoken? "... Didn't expect to see you again."

Answer: Michael

The jungle was dark and foggy, and Cindy was urging Ana to continue moving on. Although Sawyer was visibly sweaty and exhausted, and most likely feverish as well, his sarcasm still had the better of him. He told Ana-Lucía she was "lost" (and entitled her to a new nickname, Ponce de Leon). She retaliated that Mr. Eko would not be gone had Michael run off, and commented that Sawyer did not seem to mind having left him behind. Just as Sawyer made claims about Michael's selfishness for Walt (and unconcern for Sawyer), Michael reappeared to say "glad you feel that way". Sawyer's genuinely surprised expression revealed that he had not expected to see Michael again any time soon.
Jin immediately showed concern (in Korean) about the worsening condition of Sawyer's wound, and Sawyer referred to Jin by "Chewie" (still relating back to the raft, when he named the Michael and Jin "Han and Chewie").
Eko's silhouette emerged last, and his urgency about having seen the Others caused the group to move out immediately. (Libby's comment about "seeing the kids" foreshadowed that there had been child survivors of the tail section as well...)
3. While Shannon is alone in the tent, Walt makes his second ghostly appearance. Which is not true?

Answer: Walt is no longer dripping wet

Sayid leaves Shannon momentarily to go get water. Before she can say "that was quick", Shannon hears a wind, the candle flame goes out, and she comes face to face with a sopping wet Walt once again. The message is cryptic, and-- just like the last one-- can only be understood when the audio is reversed.

He warns, "They are coming, and they are close". At first, Sayid insisted that it was a dream. Shannon was determined to set out to find him. The "real" existence of Walt is confirmed in this episode when Sayid also sees him in the jungle... Or else, the "vision" is part of the notorious "island sickness" (in which case Boone, Locke, Jack, Shannon, and now Sayid-- all of whom have had "visions"-- have been "infected").
4. When Claire awoke Aaron after hearing Shannon's screams, Claire told Charlie, "He's going to be up all night and fussy all day."

Answer: False

It is almost as if the roles have now been switched between Charlie and Claire in the baby care area. After Claire awakens Aaron and goes toward the screaming, Charlie reprimands Claire and takes baby.
Claire even apologizes, and though reluctant she hands over Aaron to Charlie.
The next day, Claire complains to Locke that it were as if Charlie and Claire playing mom and dad to the baby (although she did not remember marrying him). This is her first indication that Charlie has become too possessive of the baby as if it were his own.
Later, Charlie goes so far as to insist to Locke that Claire has quite a bit to learn about responsibility (to which Locke wastes no time in reminding Charlie that he is a "recovering" addict and in no place to speak of responsibility).
5. In Shannon's flashback, she is seen teaching a children's ballet class. What is the name of the young girl who Shannon compliments?

Answer: Sophie

Shannon's first flashback opens in a ballet studio, in which Shannon is leading a class of young girls with her co-instructor (and roommate), Dominique. After telling Sophie that she had done "beautifully" Sophie asks if her "papa" had seen. We see an older man flirting with Dominique, who later tells Shannon that he had asked Dominique to be his "au pair". Shannon mocks him with a French accent, which may suggest that after Shannon became broke she did in fact become the "au pair" (during which time she would have lived in France). Shannon receives two major phone calls.

The first reveals her father has been in an accident. The second is that her rent check had bounced. Shannon came to realize that without Sabrina's help she was indeed penniless, after her stepmother refused to give her any of her father's money. (This also explains why she later scammed the money from Boone.)
6. This is the first episode in the "Lost" series in which the two main characters, Jack and Kate, did not appear?

Answer: False

While neither Jack nor Kate make an island appearance-- presumably they are in the hatch this time, taking shifts on the "doomsday button"-- Jack makes a brief but essential appearance in Shannon's flashback. When Jack walks by the doctor with whom Shannon and Sabrina are speaking in the hospital (about Adam), it conclusively seals the connection foreshadowed earlier in Jack's flashback with Sarah. (Adam was indeed the man Sarah had collided with, one or both of whom in an SUV, and Mr. Rutherford was pronounced dead while Jack was resuscitating Sarah.)
Thus, it is known that Jack and his father (very ironically, Christian Shepard) were surgeons in St. Sebastian's hospital. It seems the religious theme is further presented.
Sabrina's calmness about the tragic news and her reaction towards Shannon (noting her as "stepdaughter" and offering no comfort) illustrates her resentment towards her.
7. As the tail section survivors make their way through the jungle with the raft survivors, Mr. Eko estimates they have about a day's walk left. Meanwhile, Sawyer is struggling and stumbles. At this point, all but who attempt to help him?

Answer: Jin

Sawyer is visibly becoming weaker, leaning heavily on his walking stick. He stumbles down to one knee, and Libby tries to evaluate his wound. When asked how he was shot, Sawyer sarcastically replies, "With a gun". Michael supplies that it occurred when his son was taken. Libby reveals that she is a clinical psychologist (which sends up little reminders about the "psychology" and "parapsychology" fields of research mentioned in Dharma video...) Sawyer asks, almost vulnerably, "It's bad, right?" Libby admits that it is, but downplays the injury and encourages Sawyer to continue because he will be okay.

Although Michael helps him stand, Sawyer is stubborn and insists on going solo. He also ignores Bernard when he offers to give a hand, and once again Sawyer struggles alone.
8. "It can't be easy losing the one person you love on the island." To whom was this spoken?

Answer: Hurley

Rose is once again busying herself doing laundry on the beach with Hurley. He questions why she doesn't use the dryer in the hatch. Rose straightforwardly responds that she "does not like hatch" and expresses enjoyment of the sun and fresh air instead.
When Shannon, sounding tired and upset, comes by asking about Walt's things. Rose comments sympathetically, "Poor thing, it can't be easy losing the one person you love on the island." Hurley glances at her but refrains from saying anything about Bernard this time. Clearly, Rose has her mind made up.
Sayid later tells Shannon, "I know what it is to lose someone you care deeply about", also referring to Boone's death (and most likely relating himself back to Nadia).
9. Locke aids a frantic Claire in calming Aaron by teaching her a new technique-- swaddling. He explains, "Babies like the feeling of being constricted. It's not until we're older that we develop a desire to be _________."

Answer: free

Yet another word of wisdom from Locke-- and it works, much to Charlie's chagrin. (He has now become very clearly jealous of Locke's interest in helping Claire and intervenes.) According to Claire, Aaron had been up and screaming for 8 hours straight. "Swaddling" is in fact an effective technique for many young babies, creating a sense of security.
Another religious "coincidence" occurs as Claire hands the wrapped infant to Locke to hold, and three people appear in the background carrying objects (some bananas) in the scene. Some theories relate this to a "nativity scene". See the screen capture at:

http://www.lost-media.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&album=775&pos=264

As far as the psychic's grim prediction for Claire's child, it will (for now) remain unfulfilled that Aaron will be "raised by another". However, the religious theme still centers heavily around the group. Claire mentions to Locke about the Charlie's statue of the Virgin Mary, unknowingly revealing his secret (the little fact it is loaded with heroin, and only Locke knows). The bell goes off in Locke's head and he once again uses the backgammon game as a way into the truth. He rolls a double six, crediting his "luck", and meaningfully tells Charlie, "It's your turn."
10. It is revealed in Shannon's flashback that Boone was offered a job by his mother and subsequently did not move to New York.

Answer: False

Boone makes a reappearance (sporting some long locks) at Shannon's father's funeral. He comforts her, much to the chagrin of his mother, whose on looking tells the whole story from thereafter. Boone gently says to Shannon, "Death sucks, doesn't it?" It seems as though these words-- though debatably-- are later heard in the jungle whispers. (Comparable to Sawyer's, "It'll come back around"?)
After, Shannon and Boone are talking and she mentions that she is eighteen. This dates the event to two years earlier (as well as Jack's encounter with Sarah) given that she was truthful when giving her age for Hurley's island census. However, recall that Desmond claimed to have landed on the island three years earlier. Hmmm...
Also, notice the teddy bear on the sofa in the background.
Shannon realizes she is on her own, after being unable to take the internship at Martha Graham dance company in New York (at which time Boone is living in New York). She later asks to stay with Boone, but he informs her that he has been offered a job (at his mother's wedding company, as mentioned to Locke) and is moving back from New York. So, Shannon finds her own way to get money...
11. While trekking along the rocky shore back across the island, Mr. Eko called for a five minute break. At this point, who handed their bottle of water to Sawyer?

Answer: Mr. Eko

The traveling survivors reached a rocky part of the shore, and Mr. Eko saw that Sawyer was having extreme difficulty continuing. He calls for a break, hands Sawyer some water, and looks over the coastline ahead. Finally, he announces to Ana, "We need to cut inland". He explains that the beach became a peninsula further along and it may not be passable. Ana realizes his motive is to get Sawyer back more quickly, although it is a more dangerous route, and becomes angry. Mr. Eko replies, "It's the only way I know."
Ana-Lucía's comment about liking Mr. Eko better when he was not talking provides insight into their experience on the island thus far. She told how twelve of their own were taken by the Others, described them as animal-like, and referred to Goodwin (which Jin recognized). When Michael said they had taken his son, Ana replied, "They took a lot of things."
The following episode would be their story.
12. When given Walt's clothing to smell, Vincent led Shannon through the jungle and stopped at Boone's grave.

Answer: False

First off, the RED leash which Vincent is still wearing would no doubt lead (literally) to danger. Red, already noted for being the formidable predictor of doom, had already foreshadowed Boone's death.
When Shannon instructed Vincent to smell the clothes and find Walt, Vincent led her to the location of Boone's grave but then pulled free and kept running (where DOES that dog go?). It was Shannon who stopped at the gravesite.
Sayid finds her and admits that he logically cannot say he believes that she had seen Walt.
Shannon reveals that she and Claire had found the messages in a bottle from the raft, and that she knew Walt was out there alone. Sayid knew she was determined to find Walt, and followed her.
13. After struggling for the better part of the journey, Sawyer collapsed from exhaustion in the jungle. When Michael asked Libby what was wrong with Sawyer, what did she not mention?

Answer: Blood loss

At this point Jin was helping Sawyer, who was leaning heavily on his shoulders, and refused to allow Bernard or Michael to assist him. Once again, Sawyer still attempts to go alone and collapses.
Michael lifts him, and Sawyer-- barely conscious-- finally breaks a barrier with Michael and admits regret for leaving him behind. Michael simply answers, "Yeah, well, good thing I ain't you."
Sawyer passes out and Jin calls for water (another new English word).
While Ana and Cindy insist on moving, Mr. Eko, Bernard, Jin and Michael build a makeshift stretcher on which to transport Sawyer. With strong teamwork, the group manages to move Sawyer up the steep embankment on their way into the forbidden jungle.
14. Who is the first to realize that Cindy is missing?

Answer: Ana

After struggling with Sawyer up the river embankment, Ana calls for Cindy and realizes she is gone. Libby was the last to be seen interacting with Cindy, and is now wearing her knapsack. The last we see of Cindy, she is in front of a cave-like entrance handing her walking stick to Libby (and is that a shadowy figure we can make out in the cave she is about to pass?)
Ana immediately blames Mr. Eko for choosing that route, saying about Sawyer, "You risked our lives to save him and he's already dead."
(Hypothetically, of course.) Then come the whispers, the meaning of which is yet undetermined. Ana draws the gun and yells for everyone to run. The onset of disaster is inevitable.
15. Shannon was shot only once by Ana-Lucía.

Answer: True

And so was the encounter between the groups of survivors. Shannon and Sayid followed Vincent in the pouring rain. The camera takes on the point of view of someone watching in the bushes as Shannon and Sayid hug and profess their love. The whispers are heard, Walt appears and both see him. He whispers, "Shhhh!" Shannon chases Walt before Sayid, still stunned, can follow. A single gun shot is heard (only one bullet remained in Sawyer's gun). Shannon emerged wounded, and collapsed and died in Sayid's arms.
Shannon became 6th casualty of original 48 main survivors on island (following the Marshall, Joanna, Boone, Scott, and Dr. Arzt).
Horror was on the faces of Jin and Michael. Ana stood frozen, still pointing gun and unable to realize what she had done, as Sayid looked on with eyes transforming into pure hatred.
However, one must consider-- did Sayid, in fact, play a part in Shannon's tragic fate?
It may be that Sayid and Nadia were meant to be together. Sayid had just promised Shannon that he would never leave her (implying after they got off the island). Sayid would not be one to break a promise, and would therefore not have found Nadia. Perhaps, then, fate stepped in.
Shannon, on the other hand, was fulfilled by Sayid's love and his promise for no more abandonment. She died "complete", with her original, manipulative personality given cause.
This ends the Shannon/Boone flashbacks, and their story has been told.
Also, all island visions have come true to this point. Locke had earlier envisioned the beech craft in the jungle and the bloody Boone. Both were fulfilled. Claire "saw" an empty cradle-- which locke later built-- and the stolen baby. Boone himself had "seen" Shannon killed by "monster". Boone's last words had been to, "Tell Shannon..." Perhaps the whispers had done the rest.
Meanwhile, her accidental death with undoubtedly lead to violence among two groups, while there will be the recognition between Jack and Ana Lucía, as well as confrontation between Ana and lead lady Kate, and the long-awaited reunion between Bernard and Rose (and Sun and Jin). The fate of Sawyer also remains in the balance at the end of this episode, leaving more questions both answered and unanswered.
R.I.P. Shannon.
