Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the pioneers of the modern vampire show was probably this one, which ran for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003. It was based on a movie and spawned a spin-off series as well as a canonic continuation in the form of comic books after it ended. It is centered around a girl who has the power to rid the world of evil creatures and her loyal group of friends. Which show is it?

Answer: Buffy

"Buffy" came, saw, and conquered. The original movie was not very successful, but author and producer Joss Whedon never stopped believing that the concept would work if he only got the right people to realize it.
Thanks to an inspired crew and a cast of excellent actors (only two of which, Anthony Stewart Head and Sarah Michelle Gellar, had a previous acting career worth mentioning), "Buffy" became an iconic show which never faltered in its quality. It was also famous for employing unconventional means every now and then, such as a musical episode ("Once More With Feeling"), an episode with barely any dialogue ("Hush"), and an episode without any music ("The Body").
"Buffy" ended after seven seasons in a breathtaking finale that finally relieved the heroine of her burden and her calling.
2. This HBO show is based on an ongoing series of books. The main protagonist is a mind-reading waitress called Sookie, and in her world, vampires have just gone public following the invention of synthetic blood. None other than Oscar winner Anna Paquin stars as the heroine. What is the title of this successful show?

Answer: True Blood

"True Blood" premiered in 2008. The books this is based on, the Southern Vampire series, were written by Charlaine Harris.
In contrast to the harmless, cuddly vampire image promoted by "Twilight" and the like, "True Blood" is a lot more uncompromising: there is blood and sex galore, sometimes even more than in the original books. As the series progresses, it moves further and further away from the books, while the first season (based on the first book in the series, "Dead Until Dark") was still very close to it.
What I particularly like about this show apart from the excellent actors is the authentic Southern setting and the extremely artistic opening credits with the sexy title song, "Bad Things" by Jace Everett.
3. Based on a series of books, this one is a 2009 addition to the pool of vampire shows. Meet our heroine, who is torn between two vampire brothers. We later learn that she looks exactly like the woman who turned those two brothers into vampires and was the reason they seem to hate each other by now... Which TV show is it?

Answer: The Vampire Diaries

"The Vampire Diaries" premiered in 2009. It is based on the books of the same name by L.J. Smith. Kevin Williamson, the author of movies such as "Scream" and "I Know What You Did Last Summer", is the head writer.
While Stefan and Damon, the two brothers, are very different (Damon is the wild one whereas Stefan tries to be good), and they are introduced as rivals, it becomes clear over the course of the show that they still have a lot of love for each other. However, the fact that Katherine (in the past) and Elena (in the present) are attracted to both of them doesn't really help.
4. This vampire show only ran for one season despite winning a People's Choice Award. It follows a 90-year-old vampire (played by Alex O'Loughlin) who works as a private investigator in Los Angeles. He once saved the life of a little girl, Beth, whom he has been watching over ever since and eventually falls in love with. Which is the show?

Answer: Moonlight

I am pretty sure that CBS is by now regretting its decision to cancel "Moonlight". After all, it was there before vampire shows started popping up everywhere, so it could have been a trend setter.
"Moonlight" sported a very charismatic protagonist, a wonderfully decadent best friend (played by Jason Dohring from "Veronica Mars"), and a sweet love story. It also showed a lot of potential for a second season, which unfortunately was left unrealized. At least they knew they were going to get canned, so they had enough time left to make sure that the main characters weren't denied their happy ending ;)
The show is also remarkable because it is one of the few vampire stories without werewolves.
5. This show focuses on yet another vampire working as a private investigator in Los Angeles. Originally from a different show, the main character became the star of his own spin-off after three seasons. Here, he operates on the principle that everybody deserves help when they need it. He is helped in his cause by an old acquaintance, two freelance demon hunters, and on occasion a karaoke-singing demon (among others). Which show is it?

Answer: Angel

"Angel", starring David Boreanaz in the title role, started out a lot darker and more melancholy than "Buffy". The character of Cordelia Chase, who became more and more likeable over the course of the show, brought in the necessary comic relief and eventually even became a love interest for Angel.
The two demon hunters are Wesley and Gunn, and the karaoke-singing demon is, of course, Lorne - arguably the funniest character on the entire show.
6. Based on yet another series of novels, this show is set in Canada and is centered on a female private detective who is suffering from an eye disease that will cause her to go blind eventually. The vampire here is an illegitimate son of none other than King Henry VIII and makes a living as an author of graphic novels. Following an incident where she saves his life, the two continue to work together. Which is the show?

Answer: Blood Ties

"Blood Ties" is based on the "Blood" books by Canadian fantasy writer Tanya Huff. Vicki Nelson, the protagonist, is a former policewoman whose illness (retinopathia pigmentosa) left her no choice but to quit the force and set up her PI office. She investigates a number of supernatural crimes together with vampire Henry Fitzroy and her former colleague and lover, Mike Celluci. She also has an assistant, Coreen, who has a crush on Henry and is very open-minded toward the unknown.
"Blood Ties" ran for two seasons (well, one and a half, really, seeing as the first season was only 12 episodes) and was then canceled, leaving lots of questions unanswered.
It starred Christina Cox as Vicki, Kyle Schmid as Henry, Dylan Neal as Mike, and Gina Holden (of "Jeepers Creepers" fame) as Coreen. I am missing this show a lot, as I thought it was really enjoyable.
7. This MTV mini series tells the story of Maggie, whose brother has mysteriously died, and her quest to find out what happened. In doing so, she assumes the identity of Sophie Fields and goes undercover at her brother's college - where nothing is as it seems and the students have a "bloody" secret... What is this series called?

Answer: Valemont

The episodes of "Valemont" are only about three minutes long; however, MTV has announced plans to string them together to form longer episodes.
Valemont University is portrayed as a sort of "Vampire Hogwarts", where the students are sorted into four groups according to their abilities (panthers, serpents, crocodiles, and apes).
8. This short-lived series hails from 1996 and only survived for eight episodes. It was loosely based on the role-playing game "Vampire: The Masquerade". Starring Mark Frankel and C. Thomas Howell as reluctant partners in trying to prevent a vampire war, this show is by now all but forgotten. Do you remember it, by any chance?

Answer: Kindred: The Embraced

Aaron Spelling was the producer of this show, which combined horror and soap opera aspects. Following the death of Mark Frankel in a motorcycle accident, it was decided not to continue the show.
9. There has been a vampire episode of "Fringe", even though that vampire was of the soul-sucking rather than the blood-sucking kind.

Answer: True

The seventeenth episode of season 3, "Stowaway", deals with a supposedly dead woman who is nevertheless connected to a number of suicide victims. She is described at one point as a "compassionate soul vampire", taking only the life force of those who are willing to give it up.
10. Which of the following mystery series has never had a vampire episode?

Answer: Primeval

"Primeval" was a British TV show that focused on prehistoric and futuristic creatures entering our world through a temporal rift. It has been compared to "Doctor Who", no less, but was canceled in 2011 after five seasons. There have been dinosaurs, sea monsters and gremlin-like creatures but no vampires.
There have been vampire episodes on "Supernatural" (season 1) "The X Files" (seasons 2 and 5), and "Sliders (season 3).
