Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which 1980s show saw a technologically-advanced car assist in fighting crime?

Answer: Knight Rider

David Hasselhoff starred as Michael Knight, a man who nearly dies from a bullet to the head in the pilot episode. He is given a new face (through plastic surgery) and a new identity, but best of all, a very intelligent car to help him with his various quests. The show originally ran for 4 seasons from 1982-86.
2. The TV show "Life on Mars", airing in the US in 2008-2009, was an adaptation of the original UK show "Life on Mars" (2006-07).

Answer: True

Both shows presented the same essential plotline: a policeman is in a car accident which sends him back in time (to 1973 in both series). The central character spends much of the series trying to work out what's going on. As noted in the opening credits, he is unsure whether he's dead, mad or in a coma.

The US series only lasted one season due to poor ratings, while the UK followed their tradition of only running a short (2 season) show, completing it while it was still popular and critically acclaimed.
3. Which of the following shows had the biggest number of single episodes?

Answer: My Three Sons

"My Three Sons", an early US sitcom, consisted of an impressive 380 episodes during its 12 year run (1960-1972). Two of the other options also showed good longevity: "Murder, She Wrote" ran for 264 episodes; and "M*A*S*H" for 256 (and 11 years, meaning it ran for longer than the war it portrayed). Perhaps surprisingly, "The Muppet Show" ran for a relatively short 120 episodes in its 5 year run (a shorter run than its animated spin-off, "Muppet Babies", which ran for 7 seasons!).
4. Which of these is the correct name for a comedy series that originally aired in 1988?

Answer: Mystery Science Theater 3000

"Mystery Science Theater 3000" (or "MST3K" to many of its fans) was certainly not a standard format TV show. It involved live-action skits, coupled with showing B-grade movies and the reactions of the mad scientists who are using them in their experiements to see whether they can help them in their aim to achieve world domination.
5. Which of the folllowing shows is the odd one out, in terms of the genre of TV show it fit into?

Answer: New Zoo Revue

Each of these options except "New Zoo Revue" are US game shows. "New Zoo Revue" was a children's musical/comedy variety show airing in the 1970s. "The Newlywed Game" also has the distinction of being one of the last network TV shows to move over to colour format, with producers sticking with black and white for several years after colour was available.
6. "The Office" was a fake documentary (or mockumentary) first airing in the UK. Which version of the show aired the longest, with a 9th season completing its run in 2013?

Answer: The U.S. version ("The Office")

The success of the original UK show has led to a large number of foreign versions. The French, German and US versions all followed similar themes, with an incompetent boss, his quirky and ambitious assistant, and a love triangle between one of the likeable workers and the office receptionist. "Le Bureau" was only a short mini-series in France, while the UK version ran for 2 seasons plus Christmas specials.

The German version completed 5 seasons in 2012.
7. A 2005-2009 show about two brothers fleeing from a US prison was called "Prison Escape".

Answer: False

The show, running for four seasons, was known as "Prison Break". A brother gets himself deliberately thrown into prison so he can break him out. The first season ends with a successful escape, while the remainder of the show is about them trying not to get re-arrested.
8. What was the name of the show involving a time-traveler, who is seemingly randomly sent to different places and times to improve people's lives?

Answer: Quantum Leap

"Quantum Leap" starred Scott Bakula as time-traveler Sam, who with the help of his friend Al (who can only appear in hologram form) puts 'things right that once went wrong' (as the title intro suggests). The show originally ran for 5 seasons from 1989-1993.
9. Which of these shows can NOT be described as fitting into the reality TV genre?

Answer: The Real Ghostbusters

"The Real Ghostbusters" was an animated spin-off of the popular 1980s movie ("Ghostbusters"). It ran for 7 seasons, from 1986-1991. The remaining titles are US reality shows appearing in the 1990s or later.
10. Often just referred to as "Laugh-In", what was the full name of the US sketch comedy TV show appearing for 6 seasons from 1968-1973?

Answer: Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In

"Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In" was hosted by comedians Dan Rowan and Dick Martin. It featured a number of regular comedians who would later go own to their own successful careers, including Goldie Hawn, Lily Tomlin and Johnny Carson (the latter of whom had already kicked off his talk show).
