Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these people was not on the permanent judging panel for this cycle of the show?

Answer: Jay Manuel

For this inaugural cycle of Tyra Banks' reality show, the girls were required to stand in front of a panel of five judges including Tyra herself, famous 1970s model Janice Dickinson, model and fashion executive Kimora Lee Simmons, "Marie Claire" editor Beau Quillian, and one guest judge to change every week. Simmons and Quillian were not asked to return as judges in future seasons though Dickinson made a return for the next three cycles of the show.

It wouldn't be until season two that mainstay Nigel Barker made his appearance as a permanent judge. Jay Manuel first appeared in season two.

He would later appear as the host of the Canadian version of the show.
2. In their first weeks on the show, the models were weaned down to ten competitors from how many candidates?

Answer: Twenty

In the first week, the twenty original candidates headed to New York City to meet the judges and vie for a place in the top ten. After deliberations between Tyra and the producers, they only chose eight of the girls; Tyra brought two more later on after they'd moved into their new penthouse apartment. For their first shoot, the girls were called to a rooftop in Manhattan to model Jennifer Lopez's new swimsuit line; their photographer was Douglas Bizzaro. Of course, it was freezing-- the girls had to model them a season ahead to be ready for summer.

When Tyra brought the girls in for their first elimination, Tessa became the first model to leave the competition.
3. During the second week of competition, the girls were taught which of these important modelling skills?

Answer: Runway walking

In their second week the nine remaining girls met with runway diva J. Alexander who taught them how to perform on the runway and gave tips for their presentation. When they had to compete in a mock runway show, Giselle won the reward and took Adrianne, Nicole, and Katie to tag along on a visit to Wyclef Jean's recording studio.

The next morning, the girls needed to show their sex appeal in a photo shoot for "Stuff" magazine. When all was said and done, the models had another elimination ceremony where Katie was sent home for her demeanor in the "Stuff" photo.
4. In week three, the girls needed to join in a photo shoot featuring which of these unique elements?

Answer: Live snakes

The third week of the competition, the eight models met with Tyra's personal make-up designer, Jay Manuel, to learn the proper applications of day and night make-up and get makeovers, revising their appearances in preparation for the next shoot. Before this, however, the girls competed to apply night make-up for a chance to visit a fashion party at the Indian Embassy. Elyse won and took Adrianne, Nicole, and Robin though Nicole decided to stay in the penthouse to phone her boyfriend. Nicole was soon eliminated from the competition after a photo shoot involving live snakes primarily because of her poor attitude.
5. The fourth week of the competition saw the elimination of which model, criticized for her skin in previous episodes and frequently seen defensively arguing with the other girls?

Answer: Ebony

The fourth week of the competition included acting lessons and a quick acting competition won by Robin (for her convincing monologue). She, Kesse, and Shannon headed off for spa treatment, much to the ire of the other girls who needed to clean the mess in the penthouse (despite their earlier complaints that the other girls didn't pull their weight). For their challenge, the girls acted in a commercial for contact lenses and Ebony was eliminated by the judges not only for a poor performance, but her tendency to be difficult to deal with, especially around the other girls.
6. Throughout the competition, the models were worried that Elyse had developed which of these?

Answer: An eating disorder

Although Elyse came into the competition as the thinnest model, the girls complained about her health throughout the show; this came to a head in week five as the models took on active-wear for Reebok. Elyse won the challenge for the week, answering interviewer questions for a local media outlet, and allowed Adrienne to join in the reward. Both had a friend or family member fly to New York for a night; Elyse had her boyfriend come out while Adrienne had her mother visit.

In the end, Giselle was eliminated for a poor attitude; Tyra and the models all noticed her tendency to bring herself down to fish for compliments.
7. In the sixth week of the competition the five remaining girls headed to which city for their Go-Sees?

Answer: Paris

To begin this week, the five models remaining in the competition were sent to Paris for a Wonderbra shoot photographed by Michel Haddi. When this was done, the girls needed to perform their challenge for the week, a five hour journey through the city for Go-Sees, meetings with model agencies all around Paris. Elyse did this the best (according to the judges) and was praised for her looks and attitude while Adrienne and Kesse failed to visit all of their appointments.

This did not sit well with the judges-- both were in the bottom two and Kesse was eliminated.
8. In week seven, only two of the final four girls completed a photo shoot featuring which risque twist?

Answer: Nudity

Remaining in Paris for the week, the final four girls were informed about the different nuances of haute couture before donning outfits and heading to dinner with four French men in an attempt to win a night in a Presidential Suite at Le Meridien. Adrienne won and brought Elyse along for a night stay before their next challenge, a simulated nude shoot for diamonds at the Buddha Bar.

When the girls arrived, Shannon and Robin opted not to pose for the camera stating that their beliefs would not allow them to do so.

When the girls stood in front of the judges, it was felt that Shannon could still be a successful model while Robin was ousted for her conservative and religious attitude.
9. In the final week of the competition, the final two competed in a runway at New York Fashion Week for which company?

Answer: Baby Phat

Heading back to New York, the final three girls were asked to visit judge Kimora Lee Simmons at the Baby Phat Headquarters to prepare for a final go-see. This would determine which two of the three girls would walk the runway at the Baby Phat fashion show at New York Fashion Week.

When the judges had their final elimination, they decided to send Elyse home because of a lack of interest in a modeling career (she felt that she wanted to be a doctor instead) and because of her tendency to act like a know-it-all.

This left only two models to compete for the winning spot.
10. Who became the first winner of "America's Next Top Model"?

Answer: Adrianne

After walking the runway at New York Fashion Week, the judges convened with both Shannon and Adrienne's portfolios to choose who would be America's Next Top Model. When all was said and done, it was Adrienne who won out over Shannon. Not only did Adrianne win a contract with Revlon Cosmetics, but she won a spread in "Marie Claire" magazine and a contract with Wilhelmina Model Agency.

She also became the first-ever official winner of "America's Next Top Model". Although Adrianne appeared in many magazines and ads in the years following the show, she found further fame in a 2008 "Playboy" spread and as a judge on the online reality/video gaming series "The Tester".
