Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does the landing party find upon beaming down to Triacus that immediately alerts them that something is very wrong?

Answer: Dead colony members

After receiving a distress call from a scientific survey colony on Triacus, Kirk, Spock and McCoy beam down to investigate. They find most of the adult colony members to be dead. The last adult, Professor Starnes, is found ranting incoherently and he soon dies. Dr. McCoy discovers they have all killed themselves.

They soon find the children of the colony playing nearby. The children are happy and do not seem upset that their parents are dead. Spock's tricorder detects a disturbance in a nearby cave. Uh-oh!
2. What happens to Captain Kirk when he enters the cave?

Answer: He is overcome with feelings of anxiety.

Kirk and Spock enter the cave to investigate the disturbance that was picked up by Spock's tricorder. There doesn't seem to be anything unusual in the cave at first, but then Kirk begins to become agitated and anxious. He needs to leave the cave and the symptoms subside once he is back outside. Kirk and Spock will have a nice moment a little later on.
3. What does Nurse Chapel treat the children to in the Enterprise recreation room?

Answer: Ice cream

Kirk brings the children back to the Enterprise and they remain in orbit around Triacus until he can figure out why all the colonists died. Nurse Chapel uses the food replicator to create ice cream treats for the children as Kirk begins to realize the Enterprise is going to be a daycare center for the foreseeable future.

The children play, pretending to be a swarm of bees. Maybe a little brandy would have been a good idea. Kirk orders the children confined and posts a security detail to keep an eye on them.
4. When the children are alone together, they perform a chant that summons a strange entity. What do the children call the entity?

Answer: "The Friendly Angel"

When the children are alone together, they perform a chant that summons an entity who they call "The Friendly Angel". The angel praises the children for getting aboard the Enterprise and with their help they will be able to play as much as they want with no one telling them what to do. Kirk and Spock are reviewing the log tapes of Professor Starnes for clues as to what happened.

The professor expressed concerns over how the adult colonists were growing anxious and refers to the feeling as "the enemy within". Is this a nod to that awesome season 1 episode?
5. What does the oldest child, Tommy, make Sulu do as part of the entity's plan to take over the Enterprise?

Answer: Change course to Marcus XII

Tommy comes to the bridge unexpectedly and says he wants to just hang out or something. Kirk doesn't seem too concerned and leaves the bridge with Spock. Apparently he has forgotten all of his concerns up to this point and decides it's a good idea to let the children wander around the ship.

The Friendly Angel has instructed the children to assume control of the Enterprise and take it to Marcus XII to look for more people to join their cause. Using some sort of telepathy or mind control, Tommy tricks Sulu into leaving orbit and they head off to Marcus XII. Do the children really have powers or are they just summoning the angel's influence?
6. How does Kirk learn that the Enterprise has left orbit around Triacus?

Answer: He tries to beam up the security detail.

Although the Enterprise is now heading to Marcus XII, the children have given the bridge and engineering crews the illusion they are still orbiting Triacus. In the transporter room, Kirk has a couple red shirts beam down to Triacus to continue the investigation and attempts to bring the security detail he left behind back up to the ship.

When they can't lock onto the coordinates of the landing party they realize they are no longer in orbit. A quick look at a view screen confirms this. Whoops! Where did those red shirts go?
7. What illusion does Lt. Uhura see while under control of the children that prevents her from obeying Captain Kirk's orders?

Answer: Herself old, diseased and dying

Rushing back to the bridge, Kirk and Spock find Tommy has control of the ship. Kirk tries to order the crew to take back control of the ship but the children provide illusions that frighten the crew into disobeying the Captain. Uhura sees her reflection in the communications console as an old, diseased woman at the time of her death. Sulu sees swords in the view screen.

A security guard cannot understand Kirk's orders. Spock is unable to obey the Captain. Kirk himself starts to doubt his command abilities and becomes distraught over losing his ship to the children.
8. How is the hold the children have on Captain Kirk broken?

Answer: Spock takes him off the bridge.

Spock can still muster up enough sense to drag the Captain off the bridge and escape the children's mind control tactics. Once they are far enough away, Kirk is able to dispel his fear of losing command and now realizes how to fight off "the enemy within". He won't be manipulated again. Kirk and Spock share a nice bro-hug in the turbolift.
9. Who attempts to place Kirk and Spock under arrest?

Answer: Chekov

After escaping from the bridge, Kirk and Spock find the children also have control of engineering when Scotty claims he'll have to kill them if they don't back off. Then they run into Chekov and a security detail in the hallway. Chekov pulls out a phaser and attempts to place them under arrest but Kirk and Spock overpower them and escape.

By the way, Chekov always seems to get his butt kicked. He's the first one to go down in a fight.
10. What is Dr. McCoy happy to see when he comes to the bridge after Gorgan is defeated?

Answer: The children are crying.

Spock figures out The Friendly Angel is actually an evil spirit from a lost band of marauders that lived on Triacus a long time ago. It feeds on the children's innocence. Kirk calls Gorgan to the bridge by replaying a recording of the children's chant. Yes, the evil is called Gorgan even though no one has ever stated that to date but Kirk knows it anyway. Kirk challenges the hold Gorgan has over the children by showing them pictures from happier times on Triacus when they played with their parents.

The children smile and laugh as they watch but are soon horrified when the pictures change to show their dead parents. The children are overcome with grief and begin to cry. Somehow this defeats Gorgan and it fades away. McCoy comes onto the bridge and is happy to see the children crying so that they can finally deal with the loss of their parents.
