Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dancing the rumba to "Leave Right Now" may have been asking for trouble. Who in 2004 made "Strictly" history by becoming the first ever celebrity to be eliminated?

Answer: Comedian Jason Wood

Eight celebrities took part in the first series of "Strictly Come Dancing", which was intended to be a one-off fundraiser for the Sport Relief charity.

Sadly, Jason Wood died in 2010 aged only 38.
2. Sometimes celebrities go before they really should, but not this one. Which motoring presenter steered so inexpertly round the dance floor in series 2 that he was given an L-plate to wear?

Answer: Quentin Willson

L-plates have to be displayed in Britain on cars driven by learner drivers. The 8 marks out of 40 awarded to Quentin Willson's Cha Cha Cha was the lowest score ever given on "Strictly". This was despite his partner, Hazel Newberry, being a three times World Professional Ballroom Champion.
3. Actress Siobhan Hayes and her partner Matthew Cutler were the first couple to be eliminated in Series 3. Siobhan played Abi Harper in which sitcom?

Answer: My Family

Siobhan and Matthew weren't bottom of the leaderboard after their waltz, but the public voted to keep Fiona Phillips in the competition. Matthew won "Strictly" with Alesha Dixon two years later.
4. Two contestants left series 4 early on. BBC newsman Nicholas Owen was eliminated in week 1, but one of the surviving contestants was then unable to continue because of health concerns. Who was this unfortunate comedian?

Answer: Jimmy Tarbuck

The BBC had no contingency plans to deal with such a situation, so the proposed three-person final became a two-person event, contested by rugby player Matt Dawson and cricketer Mark Ramprakash.
5. Actor Brian Capron might have expected to survive the first week of series 5 - after all, his partner had won the previous series with Mark Ramprakash. Who was she?

Answer: Karen Hardy

Brian had recently played serial killer Richard Hillman in "Coronation Street" and Karen choreographed a sinister waltz for him using music from "The Godfather". This was the first series in which the bottom two couples took part in a dance-off and the judges chose to save rugby player Kenny Logan and his partner Ola Jordan.
6. "EastEnders" stars have always featured in "Strictly Come Dancing", many of them very successfully. This actor, who played Kevin Wicks, bucked the trend by being the first to depart in Series 6. Who was he?

Answer: Phil Daniels

It wasn't a good series for "EastEnders" actors. Phil Daniels, Gillian Taylforth and Jessie Wallace all took part and were all eliminated by week 4. Fellow "EastEnders" Jill Halfpenny and Kara Tointon were glitter ball trophy-winners and Christopher Parker made it to the first ever final.
7. Sports stars often do well on Strictly, but not always. The first celebrity to leave in series 7 had won which of the following?

Answer: a Wimbledon singles title

As well as Wimbledon, Martina Hingis, who left first, had won three Australian Opens and one US Open title. Based on the judges' scores, she and her partner Matthew Cutler should have been safe, but the public vote meant they had to take part in the dance-off. The four judges were evenly split, but Len Goodman's casting vote saved Rav Wilding and Aliona Vilani.
8. Musician and actor Goldie was the first contestant to leave Series 8. He had previously reached the final of which BBC reality TV show?

Answer: Maestro

"Maestro" was a competition in which eight celebrities learned to conduct a concert orchestra. Goldie finished second to comedian Sue Perkins. A follow-up series, called "Maestro At The Opera", was won by "Strictly" judge Craig Revel Horwood.
9. With "Strictly Come Dancing", as with politics, you can't win without public support. Which former health minister's failure to get out the vote led to a first round departure in series 9?

Answer: Edwina Currie

Though arguably a worse dancer than Edwina Currie, fellow Conservative politician Ann Widdecombe had survived until week 10 of the previous series. Long-time political correspondent John Sergeant controversially withdrew from the show two months into series 6. Cabinet minister Vince Cable foxtrotted with Erin Boag in the 2010 "Strictly" Christmas Special.
10. First to leave in series 10 was Johnny Ball. His daughter, DJ and presenter Zoe Ball, had taken part in an earlier series of "Strictly". How did she get on?

Answer: got to the final but finished third

Johnny Ball, famous for children's programmes such as "Think Of A Number", was, at 74, the oldest contestant so far on "Strictly Come Dancing".

Zoe Ball took over as presenter of the companion programme, "Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two", in 2011.
