Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A golden retriever played Comet in this American TV sitcom, which ran from 1987 to 1995. The show follows a widowed Danny Tanner as he raises his three daughters with the help of his best friend and his brother-in-law. What was the name of the TV show?

Answer: Full House

The show was slightly unusual in that it cast child twins to play Michelle, the youngest of the three daughters. It was not until the seventh season that they were credited with the role separately. Up until that point, they were shown as "Mary-Kate Ashley Olsen". Although they looked the same, there were not identical twins.

Buddy, the golden retriever who performed as Comet, also appeared as the lead in the financially-successful 1997 film "Airbud" and its 1998 sequel "Air Bud: Golden Retriever". This sparked a franchise with more than a dozen films, although Buddy only appeared in the 1997 and 1998 films.
2. This TV series from the late 1970s followed the exploits of a woodsman and his grizzly bear. What was the name of the book which led to the TV series with the same name?

Answer: The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams

The 1972 book by Charles E. Sellier Jr was turned by him into a highly successful film in 1974, which in turn led to the TV series and then a 1982 TV movie. The actor Dan Haggerty played Adams in all of these. The book is based on the famous Californian mountain man and animal trainer of the same name, who successfully captured and trained a number of grizzly bears during the 1850s.
3. In this science fiction series, Spot was the name of Data's pet cat. Spot liked Data but seemed to have a problem with most of the other crew. Which TV series was this?

Answer: Star Trek: The Next Generation

"Star Trek: The Next Generation" originally aired from 1987 for seven years. Spot appeared in several episodes during the last four seasons as the cat belonging to Lieutenant Commander Data, the android officer of the USS Enterprise. Originally appearing as a male Somali cat, Spot had become a female orange tabby by the 171st episode "Genesis" and gave birth to kittens.
4. The photo shows a young French bulldog. On which American TV comedy series did the Pritchetts have a French bulldog called Stella?

Answer: Modern Family

"Modern Family" started in 2009 and follows a mockumentary format. Stella appeared in a few episodes from 2010 to 2012, played originally by a dog called Brigitte. Brigitte apparently got sacked before the fourth season to be replaced by a lookalike called Beatrice. Perhaps she demanded too many doggy treats. Stella was Jay and Gloria's dog.
5. Tongo, a chimpanzee performer with voice-over provided Dayton Allen, played a secret agent working for A.P.E. up against the evil organisation C.H.U.M.P. What was the name of this American TV series?

Answer: Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp

Stan Burns and Mike Marmer, two of the writers on the "Get Smart" spy spoof comedy series, were able to film two seasons of dressed-up chimpanzees (with human voice-overs) doing stunts. The spy stories were broken up by musical interludes with the all-chimp band The Evolution Revolution, fronted by Lancelot Link. There is said to be no resemblance to music of The Monkees band.
6. We go to Florida now for an aquatic Lassie. What is the name of the 1964 TV series which has a bottle-nose dolphin helping to protect a wildlife park and catch criminals?

Answer: Flipper

"Flipper" was a television adaptation of the 1963 film of the same name. It ran for three years. The role of Flipper was taken on by various female dolphins (five in total) as they were less aggressive than the males and also their skin was not scarred through fighting. They could do everything except the tail walk, for which a male dolphin was brought in.
7. In this American sitcom spin-off, one of the Crane family members was Eddie. Eddie was a Jack Russell terrier belonging to retired ex-cop Martin Crane. What was the name of this show which ran from 1993 to 2004?

Answer: Frasier

"Frasier" was a spin-off of "Cheers", the common link being the psychiatrist Fraser Crane. Eddie was played by Moose on "Frasier" from 1993 to 2003, appearing in 192 episodes. He shared the role with his son Enzo latterly. One of his trademarks was his long fixed stare at Kelsey Grammar (who played Frasier). At one point during the series Moose was said to have received more fan mail than any of the other actors.
8. Despite having the name Lucky, the Tanner family's cat was usually at risk of being eaten by their alien guest. In which American sitcom did Lucky appear?

Answer: ALF

ALF stood for Alien Life Form and was the nickname given to him by Willie Tanner. The basic premise was, after ALF (played by a puppet) crash landed in their garage, the Tanners hid him from the government and their nosey neighbours whilst he repaired his spaceship and the Tanners got to know him. Cats were the equivalent of cattle on ALF's home planet, hence his interest in eating Lucky.

The show ran from 1986 to 1990.
9. J. Fred Muggs, a chimpanzee, had a four-year run at this long-running American daily morning TV show. The main anchor at the time for this NBC show was Dave Garroway, who was reportedly jealous of Muggs and the attention he got. What was the name of the show?

Answer: The Today Show

"The Today Show" (or "Today") first aired in 1952 and dominated the format until the 1980s when ABC's "Good Morning America" topped the ratings. J. Fred Muggs appeared during the period 1953-1975 and was still alive in 2012, at the age of 61. He was brought in as a mascot and helped to boost ratings, bringing much need advertising revenue.
10. Back to the late 1960s for this Australian TV series, which follows the adventures of an intelligent kangaroo and the Head Ranger's son Sonny, who befriended her. What was the name of the series again?

Answer: Skippy the Bush Kangaroo

The photo shows an eastern grey kangaroo, the same variety as featured on the TV show. Some 91 episodes in three seasons were filmed and shown in more than 80 countries. The series was revived in the 1992 series "The Adventures of Skippy". For a feature-length episode, you can watch the spin-off film "The Intruders" (1969).
