Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does the "J" in Rimmer's middle name stand for?

Answer: Judas

Arnold Judas Rimmer - but he tells everyone the J is for Jonathan.
2. What are the names of Rimmer's brothers?

Answer: Frank, Howard, John

"'The Four Musketeers,' we used to call ourselves. Well, 'The Three Musketeers', actually - they always let me be the Queen of Spain."
3. Did Rimmer divorce his parents?

Answer: yes

At age 14. He got paid maintenance until employment age, and access every fourth weekend to the family dog.
4. What was Rimmer's prison sentence for murder?

Answer: 9,336 years

8 years per murder count, 1,167 counts. Due to his hologramatic status, he was to serve the counts consecutively. He was convicted of murdering the entire crew of Red Dwarf - 1,169 people, minus himself and Lister, who was in Stasis. He didn't actually kill them, but his own guilt over not fixing the driveplate properly - which caused the radiation leak that wiped out the crew - caused the Mind Scan to think he was responsible. He was acquitted after Kryten's brilliant defense, which painted Rimmer as an incompetent vending repairman with a Napoleon complex.
**NOTE** In the "Justice" episode in which this takes place, the sentencing computer states that for the 1,167 counts, 8 years per count, Rimmer is to serve 9,328 years. HOWEVER 8 times 1,167 equals 9,336. Assuming that a computer out in deep space that long can hardly be blamed for a calculation error, I took it upon myself to provide the correct mathematical answer. For those who are "script-happy", the script answer is 9,328, even though that is mathematically incorrect. I do not see this as being a problem, since only one of these options is in the answer.
Had I provided the script answer, I would no doubt be deluged with notes pointing out the math error, whereas now I am getting notes about the script. I can't win either way. Red Dwarf is full of errors and contradictions; I do my best in these quizzes to provide the correct answer, and when there are blips like this one, explain them.
5. What is Rimmer's favorite board game?

Answer: Risk

He not only plays Risk, he talks about the dice rolls he had in previous games. When Lister asked him how he could possibly remember what he rolled in a game over 3 million years ago, Rimmer tells him he looked it up in his Risk Journal, in which he has kept a record of every game he's played since Cadet School.
6. When Rimmer won the competition and got aboard the holoship 'Enlightenment', what was his position?

Answer: Navigation Officer

This was Nirvana Crane's position, and since he replaced her, he got her job. He didn't stay aboard the Enlightenment, though, when he realized that Nirvana had resigned from the competition in order to let him win. It was at this point that he realized that they loved each other - so he resigned so she could be brought back to life, and he returned to Red Dwarf.
7. What language does Rimmer try, repeatedly, to learn?

Answer: Esperanto

He even ordered tapes to play at night - "Learn Esperanto While You Sleep", but he still can't speak or translate the simplest sentences.
8. What happened when Rimmer volunteered for the Samaritan Switchboard?

Answer: five people committed suicide

It wouldn't have been that bad, but the fifth caller was a wrong number. It made the papers, you know. They called it Lemming Sunday.
9. What type of wallpaper did Rimmer have as a child?

Answer: helicopter

When Rimmer was young he had a pet lemming. He loved it so much he built it a little wall so it could hurl itself off of it. It broke his heart when it bit him, and he had to smash its brains out on the wall. It totally ruined his helicopter wallpaper.
10. Rimmer found out through his hypnotherapist, Donald, that he had been what person in a past life?

Answer: Alexander the Great's Chief Eunuch

What other explanation is there for the overwhelming urge he has to bathe women in warm olive oil?
11. What is embroidered onto the pocket of Rimmer's pajamas?

Answer: Home Sweet Home

He probably did this himself. After all, he does sew his name into his ship-issued condoms, and hangs his underwear on coat hangers.
12. Who was Rimmer's first lover?

Answer: Yvonne McGruder

The ship's female boxing champion. Their romance lasted from 7:31pm-7:43pm. And that includes the time it took to eat the pizza. Rachel is his current girlfriend (though she has a puncture).
13. If Rimmer could go anywhere in time, where would he go?

Answer: the 19th century

A chance to march with Napoleon's army and kill Belgiums. Mah-velous.
14. When Lister is about to burn Rimmer's books, Rimmer is extolling the virtues of all books - until Lister pulls one out that clearly falls outside of this category. What book is it?

Answer: Biggles Learns to Fly

Oh all right, you can burn that one.
15. Where does Rimmer hide his journal?

Answer: inside 'A-Z of Red Dwarf'

In this journal he tells of his relationship with McGruder, Gazpacho Soup Day, and what happened after he took the mushrooms. Titan Mushrooms (street name Freaky Fungus) are the hallucinogenic mushrooms that Lister gave him with breakfast - what followed was a voyage to trip-out city. Rimmer appeared for inspection naked except for driving gloves and swimming goggles, then attacked two senior officers, believing they were armed and dangerous giraffes.
16. Rimmer finally meets aliens who can give him a new body - what's their name?

Answer: Legion

"Our name is Legion, for we are many." Legion gave Rimmer a Hard Light body, in which he has a physical form - with the bonus of being virtually indestructible. This doesn't stop him from being a complete coward.
17. How many times has Rimmer failed his astronavigation exam?

Answer: 13

This in spite of taking learning drugs, which are illegal. The main reason he fails is he spends all of his time that he should be studying on making revision tables, then he panics when he takes the test. Once he wrote "I am a fish" 400 times on his exam. **NOTE** I have received several notes regarding how many times Rimmer has failed. Please note: In "Future Echoes", Rimmer states "I have taken the astro-navigation exam - nine times. Ten, if you count the time I had my spasm." In "Waiting For God", after looking at the Captain's notes, Rimmer states "Constantly fails the exam? I'd hardly call eleven times "constantly". I mean, if you eat roast beef eleven times in your life, one would hardly say that person constantly eats roast beef. No, it would be a rare, nay, freak occurrence." Finally, in "Justice", during the defense, Kryten states, "This man who sat and failed his astronavigation exam on no less than thirteen occasions.

This sad man, this pathetic man, this joke of a man..." This is the last time the number of failures is noted.

However, from the progression we can only surmise that Rimmer continues to take, and fail, his exams even after he died.
18. What unique thing did Rimmer do while eating?

Answer: ate in alphabetical order

Better than his parents, who were Seventh Day Advent Hoppists, and ate (and did everything) hopping every seventh day. They took the Bible literally, word for word. Unfortunately, their their Bible had a typo. 1 Corinthians 13, "Faith, hop and charity, and the greatest of these is hop."
19. Who is Rimmer's favorite musician?

Answer: Reggie Wilson

Rimmer loves Reggie Wilson's Hammond Organ music. He also loves Morris Dancing and 20th century telegraph poles - what a smeg head.
20. What day is Gazpacho Soup day?

Answer: November 25th

The day, after only 12 years in the Space Corp, that he was privileged to eat at the Captain's table. They served Gazpacho soup. Rimmer's was cold, so he ordered it to be taken away and brought back hot. This caused him to be humiliated in front of everyone else at the table- he didn't know that Gazpacho soup is meant to be served cold. If someone had only told him that, just once, he could have been an officer. Due to this major injustice dealt him, "Gazpacho soup" were Rimmer's last words, recorded on his Death Video.
