Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The episode commences with Bart's class watching a film about what element?

Answer: Zinc

Bart is virtually nodding off in class as he and the other students are forced to sit through a projected movie about zinc and its myriad of uses in daily life. As it turns out, the kids really don't care that zinc is used to make car batteries, rotary telephone mechanisms, and the firing pin of a handgun.

When the movie ends, the kids leave class as quick as possible, despite Mrs. Krabappel's suggestion that they stay, even if it means her doing their homework for them.
2. After an assembly in the auditorium, the kids of Springfield Elementary become infatuated with which of these?

Answer: Yo-yos

After school, Mrs. Krabappel drives home in the rain, stopping off at the Kwik-E-Mart and discovering her ex-husband put sugar in her gas tank. When she reaches her apartment and flips through a magazine, she decides that it might be fun to put out a personal ad, just to see if any men are interested.
At school the next day, the kids are called to the auditorium for an assembly held by the Twirl King Champions, a group of professional yo-yo users. It takes one day before everyone in the school has a yo-yo.
3. Why is Bart forced into detention?

Answer: He breaks a fish tank

Yo-yo fever extends across the week before Mrs. Krabappel is forced to ban yo-yos from her class entirely and, yes, this includes all assignments and reports of any sort. Immediately after this happens, Milhouse urges Bart to perform a new trick and, unsurprisingly, he has one up his sleeve he calls 'Plucking the Pickle'.

As he builds up steam to complete the trick, he accidentally sends the yo-yo flying into the glass of the class fish tank, and a month of detention is the result.
4. Bart, penning a letter to Edna, uses the name of which of these?

Answer: A former American President

Bart tries to weasel his way out of detention but it's not going to happen. Before he knows it, he's actually working on the plumbing behind the class sink. One day, when Mrs. Krabappel is called off to the teacher's lounge for happy hour, he goes to retrieve his yo-yo from her desk drawer but finds the personal ad instead. With that in mind, and the pile of letters accompanying the ad, he takes it upon himself to write a note and send it to her under the name 'Woodrow', based on a Presidential photo in the classroom. Edna quickly falls in love with the fake man.
5. It's too cold outside, so Marge suggests the family buy which of the following?

Answer: Doghouse

Looking out the kitchen window, Marge comments that it's cold enough outside that they should be justified in buying Santa's Little Helper a doghouse. Homer feels as though she may actually be brainwashed by the doghouse ads on TV, so he decides, instead, to build his own for the family dog.
Bart, meanwhile, receives a letter back from Edna, and enclosed is a sexy picture to get his pencil moving. He plans to Xerox it.
6. Who ends up picking up new curse words by listening to Homer?

Answer: Todd Flanders

While Homer works on the doghouse in the backyard, Todd Flanders plays in the adjacent yard and, inadvertently, picks up on some of the bad language coming from the other side of the fence. That night at dinner, he ends up dropping a few new words and gets sent straight to bed (without Bible stories). Flanders, after speaking to Reverend Lovejoy, decides he'll need to find the source of the problem. Bart, meanwhile, asks Lisa for help in writing a second letter without telling her who he's writing for.

He asks the same of Marge, but it isn't until he asks Mrs. Krabappel what she's feeling that he gets inspiration.
7. Who suggests that Homer start a swear jar?

Answer: Marge

Ned quickly discovers that Homer is the one responsible for the recent string of bad words and goes to confront him about it. When he asks Homer to can the potty mouth, Homer somehow manages to get Ned to decide to shave his moustache out of fairness.
That evening, Homer tells Marge about the swearing issue and Marge, unsurprisingly, sides with Ned. She suggests that they create a swear jar, and every time he curses, he'll need to give in a quarter to make things right.
8. When Mrs. Krabappel asks her mystery man to send a picture, whose picture does Bart send?

Answer: Gordie Howe

Bart ends up watching romantic movies to get more ideas for his letters to Edna and it only makes her more infatuated with her mystery man. When she receives her next one, she decides it's time to receive a picture, so Bart pulls a photo of NHL player Gordie Howe out of a classroom textbook and sends it along.

As soon as this is received, Edna insists that they finally meet for dinner. Bart decides that he needs to keep up the charade, despite the fact it's clearly not going to end well.
9. Does Homer finish his construction project?

Answer: No

The swear jar proves to be a wise idea on Marge's part. As Homer keeps swearing, the jar keeps filling and soon Homer barely responds to things that would otherwise provoke a normal person to swear. As his doghouse continues to fail in its construction, however, he finally blows up, and destroys the work in progress.
Fortunately, Marge and Lisa used the money in the swear jar to purchase a brand new dog house...and there was enough for a six pack of Duff Beer.
10. Does Edna ever find out the truth about her mystery correspondence?

Answer: No

After sending Edna to a fake date at The Gilded Truffle and, effectively, standing her up, Bart realizes how miserable he's made his teacher feel about herself. During detention, she admits that he's likely the closest thing to a man in her life, as depressing as that is. That evening, he tells his family the truth and they realize how dire things have gotten. Bart admits that he's done the wrong thing, and Homer suggests telling her the truth, but they realize that it may depress her more. In the end, they write her one final letter and Bart leaves it under her apartment door. Fortunately, it's enough to give her closure.
