Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When we first meet the main character of "Bleach", Ichigo, which of these is he?

Answer: a high school student

The high school in question is Karakura High School (in English translation). Ichigo and his friends are described as being 15 years old, though they appear to be of adult age; this is a not-uncommon feature of many anime series.

The choice "state alchemist" is a reference to an entirely different anime, "Fullmetal Alchemist"; the others are invented.
2. In the English dub of "Bleach", "shinigami" are sometimes referred to as which of these?

Answer: Soul Reapers

The concept of the shinigami is based on the Japanese version of the "Grim Reaper". Their home is called the Soul Society in the English dub, as "heaven" was considered to have associations that wouldn't fit the tone of the story.

The choice "Individual Eleven" comes from the "Ghost in the Shell" series, while "Sacred Jewel Shards" is an element of "Inuyasha".
3. Ichigo learns to fight masked evil spirits. What are these called?

Answer: hollows

The hollows are former human beings who, upon death, either give in to despair or remain in the mortal world for too long, and thus become malevolent monsters. Human beings who die in a more positive state of mind can peacefully move on to the Soul Society.

"Homunculi" is a "Fullmetal Alchemist" reference; "nirvash" is an "Eureka Seven" reference. Otaku is a derisive Japanese term roughly equivalent to "nerd".
4. Those "Bleach" characters whose job it is to fight evil masked spirits reside in what?

Answer: The Soul Society

"The Soul Society" is the "Bleach" name for the afterlife or spirit world. The other choices come from other anime series: Ganymede from "Cowboy Bebop", Gekkostate from "Eureka Seven", and Albion from "Trinity Blood".
5. Ichigo receives training in fighting from Urahara, who runs what kind of establishment in Ichigo's town?

Answer: a candy store

Urahara is a mysterious figure in the first few dozen episodes, though more of his history becomes apparent later. His candy store is an unusual one in that it leads to a massive underground cavern, where shinigami fighting techniques can be practiced in privacy.
6. Ichigo travels to the realm where Rukia is held prisoner; he goes there with four companions. Who are they?

Answer: Orihime, Chad, Uryu, and Yoruichi

All the incorrect choices refer to "Bleach" in some way: Quincy, Bount, Arrancar, and Zanpakuto are names of groups of beings, or a weapon; Kubo, Noriyuki, Pierrot, and Abe come from the production side of "Bleach"; and Soifon, Kira, Zaraki, and Iba are parts of the names of Captains or Lieutenants of the Shinigami.
7. Ichigo and his companions find themselves fighting members of the Gotei 13; each division of this organization is led by which of these?

Answer: Captain

The literal translation of the Japanese "Taicho", the name for the head of each division, is "unit commander". However, "Captain" was used for the English dub.

A gikongan is an artificial soul, made by shinigami scientists for the purpose of forcing a soul from a body; the character Kon is such an entity. The distractor "Mage" refers to magicians; coincidentally that word also refers to Samurai hair-styles.
8. The spirit weapon wielded by the companion of Ichigo who is a Quincy resembles which of these?

Answer: bow and arrows

Historically the Quincy used both longbows and crossbows, which were constructed from spiritual particles drawn from everything around them. The Quincy and the shinigami warred over the question of whether hollows should be utterly destroyed (as the Quincy believed) or purified (as the shinigami argued).

A katana is a Japanese sword, while a mace is a club-like weapon most famously used in Europe in the Middle Ages.
9. Ichigo's red-headed female companion has a spirit weapon that takes the form of what manifestation?

Answer: six fairy-like creatures

The fairy-like creatures are Shun Shun Rikka, which is translated in the dub as Six Princess Shielding Flowers. They live in hair-clips until called forth by Orihime, who calls on various combinations of their powers to accomplish differing defensive or healing tasks.

The giant boomerang is an "Inuyasha" reference; a Mora knife is a Swedish belt-knife; the pistol is made up.
10. The friend of Ichigo who is partly of Mexican descent began the anime without special powers, but eventually developed a spirit weapon that is in the form of which of these?

Answer: energy-blasting armor on his right arm

Chad's armor, called Brazo Derecha de Gigante (or Right Arm of the Giant), began to manifest after his spiritual powers were awakened.

The masakari battle-axe is an ancient Japanese weapon that was used by warrior monks. The scythe is a reference to the anime "Trinity Blood"; the main character Abel Nightroad wielded such a weapon. The machete is a Mexican bladed tool, generally used for cutting through brush.
