Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the flash-forward at the beginning of the episode, Cinnabon manager Gene was taken to the hospital after collapsing at work. As he left the hospital, what item in the taxi cab drew his attention?

Answer: Air freshener

The episode began with a flash-forward to Jimmy's future life as Gene Takavic, a Cinnabon manager in Omaha, Nebraska. Last season, we saw Gene collapse at work after getting a little too close to his previous life as a lawyer when he offered free legal advice to a suspect apprehended at the mall: "Don't say anything... Get a lawyer". Now we saw the paramedics taking him to a hospital, and after a battery of tests, he was released - no heart attack, just a false alarm.

But he had a couple of nerve-racking experiences in the hospital.

When he looked out the door of his hospital room, he saw a police officer at the nurses' station, and then as he was leaving the hospital, the clerk stopped him because she was having trouble processing his driver's license, but it turned out to be an operator-error.

He finally made it to a cab and asked the driver to take him to the mall. He was beginning to finally relax when he spotted an Albuquerque Isotopes air freshener hanging from the cab's rear-view mirror.

The Isotopes are a minor league baseball team in New Mexico, and later in the episode, we saw Mike watching an Isotopes game on TV. But back to Gene - after he spotted the air freshener, he caught the driver's eyes in the rear view mirror and believed that the driver was staring at him. Every time he looked at the mirror, he saw the driver's eyes on him. Gene decided to get out of the cab in a random neighborhood, but as he walked away, he noticed the cab didn't move. Now it's possible that the cab driver was from Albuquerque and knew Saul from his many ads, or maybe he was an old client of Saul's. Or maybe he was just a serial killer looking for his next victim. Or maybe it meant nothing at all. But as a reviewer in "Rolling Stone" magazine pointed out, the cabbie was played by "busy character actor" Don Harvey, an unusual choice for a meaningless part.
2. How did Jimmy find out that his brother Chuck had died?

Answer: Howard left a message on Kim's answering machine.

It was morning at Jimmy and Kim's apartment. Jimmy woke up first, fed the fish, made coffee and was circling prospective jobs in the want ads while eating cereal. His phone rang as he was bringing a cup of coffee to Kim; he saw that it was Howard so he declined the call.

Then, as he was wrapping Kim's cast in plastic, her phone rang. Jimmy said to ignore it: "if it's important, they'll leave a message". The call went to her answering machine, and we heard the message: "Kim, it's Howard. I'm trying to reach Jimmy... I really need to talk to him... it's Chuck". Now we don't know if he proceeded to tell Jimmy that Chuck had died or whether Jimmy called him back and got the news, but the news came from Howard.

The next scene was Jimmy and Kim speeding to Chuck's house, or rather what remained of Chuck's house; it was mostly a shell of burnt timbers.

The coroner van was getting ready to leave, and Howard prevented Jimmy from going to it: "Jimmy, no". Later we saw Jimmy and Kim sitting on the bench where we once had seen Jimmy sitting with Chuck. Jimmy told Kim the backyard was filled with electrical appliances: "The firemen didn't do that.

He did that. I saw him five days ago. He was listening to jazz, all the lights worked, he was himself... Something made him relapse".
3. What change occurred in Mike's life when we first saw him in the episode?

Answer: He quit his job as a parking lot attendant.

Since the beginning of the show, Mike had worked in the parking lot booth at the courthouse, and it was through his job there that he met Jimmy in the first season. Remember the stickers? "Like a troll under the bridge, you must have the stickers or you won't pass!" But now that Lydia Rodarte-Quayle was laundering the money he stole from Hector Salamanca, he didn't need the parking attendant job. On his last day, he took a look around and then left the booth as the next shift worker, Carl, arrived.

After a brief chat and a "take it easy" from Mike, Carl told him that he needed Mike's windbreaker: "The boss says he's gonna want the windbreaker". Mike responded, "of course he does" as he removed the windbreaker and handed it to Carl. Then he walked off with his thermos, perhaps saying goodbye to his last legitimate job.
4. Before the funeral, Howard called Jimmy to run something by him. What was it?

Answer: Chuck's obituary

Jimmy spent most of the episode in a daze. He was standing at the kitchen sink, staring into space with the water running when Kim interrupted him to hand him the phone. Howard was calling because he wanted to run Chuck's obituary by Jimmy so they could get it in the paper "before the circus".

As Howard rattled off Chuck's many accomplishments (graduating as valedictorian from high school at the age of fourteen, leading his college debate team to three national championships, graduating magna cum laude from Georgetown Law...), Jimmy listened stone-faced for most of the call before putting the phone down and walking away. Kim then picked up the phone, and when Howard was done speaking, she told him that Jimmy liked it and go ahead with publishing it.
5. Jimmy appeared numb for most of the episode, but Kim did finally manage to get a reaction from him. What did she get him to partake in?

Answer: Shots of tequila

According to actor Bob Odenkirk, Jimmy was "compartmentalizing [Chuck's death], consciously and subconsciously". After walking away from Howard's call regarding the obituary, Jimmy sat on an ottoman, staring at the carpet. Kim then dug out a bottle of tequila from one of the many boxes in their apartment - probably the bottle that Jimmy had bought to celebrate his anticipated settlement of the Sandpiper case.

She poured two shots and patted the sofa to try to get Jimmy to come sit with her, but he initially didn't move, so she drank her shot alone.

As actress Rhea Seehorn pointed out, " You need to withhold your judgment about a person's grieving process for the most part", so Kim didn't feel that he was shutting her out. Jimmy then moved next to her and downed his shot, and the two of them did shots until the bottle was empty.

In the morning, Kim was asleep on the couch, but Jimmy was still sitting there, same numb expression.
6. Last season, Hector Salamanca had collapsed after taking the pills Nacho had doctored. Where did Nacho dispose of the fake pills?

Answer: In a river

At the end of the last season, Hector Salamanca collapsed during a meeting with Juan Bolsa and Gus Fring. Nacho collected the fake pills from the ground, where they'd fallen after Hector collapsed, and he handed the paramedics Hector's real medicine, but he now needed to get rid of the pills he had doctored.

While Gus was on the phone with Juan Bolsa, Nacho spotted a broken grate on the ground and walked toward it, planning to drop the pill bottle in the grate. But as he approached the grate, Gus turned around and told him that Bolsa wanted to see him.

After leaving the meeting with Bolsa, Nacho stopped his truck on a bridge and tossed the pills into the water. He then left, apparently thinking all was well, but unfortunately for him, Gus's henchman Victor had been watching him.

As executive producer Peter Gould pointed out, "He seems to be home free, except he's not".
7. After telling Gus, Nacho, and Arturo that Hector Salamanca had suffered a stroke, what declaration did Juan Bolsa make concerning Salamanca's territory?

Answer: It would remain Salamanca territory.

Perhaps to Gus Fring's chagrin, Juan Bolsa declared that "Salamanca territory stays Salamanca territory. Nothing changes". Bolsa didn't know Nacho, but Arturo vouched for him, explaining that he was one of Tuco's men. Bolsa told Nacho and Arturo to make sure the operation ran as expected and "things could go very well for you".

After Nacho and Arturo left, Bolsa told Fring that Salamanca had "always been trouble, but he keeps his house in order". He then asked for Fring's opinion, presumably on what might happen with Salamanca being incapacitated. Fring responded, "Someone will move against the Salamancas. Which brings war. Which brings chaos. Which brings the DEA".
8. How did Mike get into the Madrigal facility in Las Cruces?

Answer: Stole an employee's badge

Mike received his paycheck from Madrigal - $10,120.51 for his work as a "security consultant". But according to executive producer Peter Gould, "something drives him to make that fake job into a real job". So Mike called Information and asked for the number and address for Madrigal in Las Cruces.

He then stole the ID badge belonging to one Barry Hedberg, an employee at Madrigal, and proceeded to spend time wandering through the Madrigal office and warehouse, even taking time to get a cup of coffee in the break room, share his opinion on a Muhammad Ali versus Bruce Lee debate ( "Does Bruce Lee have a gun? Because if he doesn't, it's Ali in three minutes or less") and sign a birthday card for Tina ("Reach for the Stars!").

While in the warehouse, he borrowed a cart and made rounds, calling out safety violations and writing up security issues he found - basically doing the job of the security consultant he was being paid to be.

He then found the owner of the ID he'd taken and reported his findings to the man's boss.

When the man said he didn't know anything about a security consultant, Mike told him to call Corporate.
9. Chuck had a large funeral attended by many colleagues and acquaintances. Who WASN'T in attendance?

Answer: His mother

A stream of Chuck's colleagues and acquaintances stopped by to offer their condolences to Jimmy at the funeral including Clifford Main (Ed Begley Jr.) and Rick Schweikart (Dennis Boutsikaris). Main was a character in the second season of the show, and Schweikart was in seasons one and two, and the cameo appearances in this episode highlighted Chuck's reputation in the legal community. We also saw Chuck's ex-wife Rebecca being consoled by Howard in the row behind Jimmy. Jimmy politely accepted the offered condolences but he continued to sit stoically, still not showing any emotion over Chuck's death.

This was a bit of a tricky question, but if you've watched the series, you'd know that Chuck's mother, Ruth McGill, couldn't have been in attendance at the funeral, as she had died several years earlier. We saw her death in a flashback in the season two episode "Kick"; she died in a hospital, calling for Jimmy with her last breath, much to Chuck's chagrin.
10. At the end of the episode, who took the blame for what he/she declared to be Chuck's suicide?

Answer: Howard

After the funeral, Kim and Jimmy returned home to find Howard sitting on their curb. Inside their apartment, Howard explained that he owed Jimmy "the truth about Chuck". Howard admitted that he didn't think it was an accident. For one, Chuck had been using the lanterns for a couple of years and wouldn't have carelessly knocked one over. Jimmy stoically listened while Howard admitted that he pushed Chuck out of the firm. Kim thought that Chuck had reacted to the bar hearing, but Howard said that Chuck actually got better after the hearing; it was the insurance that did him in. Jimmy asked what he meant about the insurance, and Howard explained that "Chuck went ballistic" after the malpractice insurance rates skyrocketed and "wanted to go to war" with the insurance company. Howard admitted that he forced Chuck out over this and that "I think he did what he did because of me". Meanwhile Jimmy, who had tipped off the insurance company and was responsible for the rates increasing, apparently decided to absolve himself of any guilt by cruelly telling Howard, "I guess that's your cross to bear". According to Bob Odenkirk, "[Chuck and Jimmy] were brothers who kind of tortured each other, but he wasn't going to let Chuck have any more of his feelings", but executive producer Peter Gould stated that "we've yet to see the full impact of what happens in this episode on Jimmy".
