Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the flashback at the beginning of the episode, who vouched for Jimmy at his bar admission ceremony?

Answer: Chuck

It was his brother Chuck who stood up for him at the ceremony: "Ladies and Gentlemen, I'm Charles McGill, Senior Partner at Hamlin Hamlin McGill. I stand before you to vouch for my brother, James Morgan McGill". Jimmy took a quick look back at Kim, who was sitting in the audience with a big smile on her face, and she gave him two thumbs up.

It seemed surprising that Chuck would so pleasantly vouch for Jimmy given his lack of respect for Jimmy's correspondence school degree and his general impression that Jimmy with a law license was like "a chimp with a machine gun".

In a flashback in season one, we saw Jimmy in the mail room with cake, celebrating his achievement; that scene likely took place a day or so after the ceremony, and during that scene, Howard had informed Jimmy that he wouldn't be employed as a lawyer at HHM. We now know that it wasn't Howard but Chuck who put the kibosh on Jimmy working as a lawyer at the firm, so Chuck must have had that on his mind when he vouched for Jimmy at the ceremony. Most likely he did it because it was expected of him; it would have reflected poorly on him if he hadn't supported his brother.
2. At the karaoke bar where the HHM staff celebrated Jimmy's bar admission, on which song did the brothers McGill duet?

Answer: ABBA's "The Winner Takes it All"

At the bar, we first saw Ernie, Jimmy's mailroom buddy; he had also been in the audience when Jimmy was presented to the bar, and he performed a very committed but painful interpretation of "Total Eclipse of the Heart". Chuck was also at the bar; apparently this was before his allergy to electricity.

When Chuck started to leave, Jimmy convinced him to stay since he (Jimmy) was singing next. Jimmy started out singing the ABBA song and then dragged the initially-unwilling Chuck into singing. But after a few lines, Chuck took the microphone from Jimmy and sang the song himself. Jimmy's voice was horrible (according to actor Bob Odenkirk, "The Odenkirks have been cursed with untunable vocal cords"), but Chuck's was very melodic, not surprising since actor Michael McKean was in a band called Spinal Tap.

At the end of the evening, Chuck took Jimmy home to Jimmy's sad little apartment and got him into bed. Realizing that it was too late to go home, Chuck ended up lying in bed next to him, and the two drifted off to sleep singing "The Winner Takes it All".
3. As part of Kim's plan to make Jimmy look sincere for his license reinstatement appeal, she set up a series of events, the first of which required Jimmy to spend a day at what location?

Answer: Chuck's grave

Kim had planned a series of activities to get the word out about Jimmy's commitment to Chuck since she believed that the reinstatement committee had called him insincere because he didn't talk about Chuck. Her first activity required Jimmy to spend the day at Chuck's grave since it was the anniversary of his death.

She was hoping that people would see him there and that word would get back to someone on the committee. Jimmy was standing at the grave with a bouquet of flowers talking to himself quietly, "Watermelon pickles... one thousand one, one thousand two..." to give the impression that he was talking to Chuck. Two people approached him, also bringing a bouquet for the grave.

They said they had worked with Chuck on the Native Peoples Education Council.

After they left, Jimmy met Kim at her car to get a bite to eat and a drink of coffee. Kim told him, "You better pace yourself though it's going to be a long day". Jimmy pointed out that they "had customers already"; he didn't think anyone would show up.
4. When Mike went to the wire company to ask if the clerk had seen Werner, how did he get the clerk to reveal the information?

Answer: He said that Werner was his ill brother-in-law and needed medication.

Mike sent his security team out to search for Werner ala "The Fugitive": "He's got a three and a half hour jump on us, but he started out on foot, which gives us a fighting chance". Mike then figured that since Werner didn't have money, his wife might have wired him some, so he called a wire company, Travel Wire, and pretended that he was Werner and needed to know to which store his wife had wired money.

At the store, Mike told the clerk that Werner was his ill brother-in-law who had early stage dementia and diabetes and that Werner didn't have his medication.

He said that Marguerite was Werner's sister in Germany who had sent him money after "he called ranting and raving". The clerk, Fred, told Mike that Werner had been there about an hour ago, but he wouldn't let Mike view the security camera to see who picked Werner up, so Mike then sadly asked where the nearest hospital was. Fred then decided to let Mike watch the video feed. Mike noticed that Werner had picked up some travel brochures while he was waiting for his ride, so Mike picked up a few for natural springs sights, like Werner had mentioned in his last call to his wife. Mike then called the hotels until he found where Werner was registered.
5. The second phase of Kim's plan to make Jimmy look sincere involved the dedication ceremony for the Charles L. McGill Reading Room at a local university. Who paid for the reading room?

Answer: Jimmy

Jimmy's college kids film crew filmed some commentary by Howard at the ceremony, and they thanked him for donating the reading room "on behalf of the whole school", but Howard said he had nothing to do with it. This was overheard by a pair of guests, one of whom was a partner at Davis and Main.

She said that the invitation said "anonymous donor" and the man said, "I assumed that meant HHM". Jimmy's make-up girl was working as a server at the event, and she told them in a hushed voice that it was Mr. James McGill who had paid for the reading room: "I saw him write the check".

When Kim ran into Rich Schweikart, he said, "This is quite an event; looks like half the attorneys in the southwest are here", which was Kim's plan. Rich then said that he'd heard that Jimmy had paid for it, to which Kim replied, "He'd prefer to remain anonymous".

When Kim went outside to drag Jimmy back in to mingle, Jimmy moaned, "Twenty-three thousand dollars? I can't believe I wrote a twenty-three thousand dollar check for this". Jimmy pointed out that he didn't see anyone from the bar association at the event, but Kim said that they would hear about it. Jimmy pitched another idea: A judge was working late and was trapped in her office when a fire broke out. "But then through the fire and smoke, a figure emerges.

It's Jimmy McGill! See, I rescue a judge. Now THAT people are going to talk about". Kim just stared at him. Jimmy relented, "It's too big. And probably it's not how I come back from insincere".
6. When Mike realized that Lalo was following him, he went into a gated parking lot. How was he able to lose Lalo in the parking lot?

Answer: He jammed the ticket machine with gum.

Lalo had been staking out Gus's chicken warehouses when he noticed Gus and his crew take off very suddenly. He followed them to the wire company where Mike met with Gus, and he then decided to follow Mike. Mike noticed that he was being followed; he didn't know who it was, but he decided to lose the tail.

As he was driving, he opened his glove box, but instead of reaching for the gun, he took out a pack of gum and began to chew a piece. He went into a gated commercial parking lot, took a ticket from the machine and parked his car. Lalo meanwhile had also entered the lot and parked his car a row away; he couldn't see what Mike was doing, but he could tell he was still in the car. Mike chewed the gum until it was soft and then put it back into the wrapper; he then repeated the process, adding more gum to the wrapper until he had several chewed pieces in there.

He then flattened out the wrapper so that it would fit in the ticket machine. When he saw a car leaving, he left too, cutting off the vehicle so that he was in front. Lalo left too, but he was behind the middle car.

After Mike put his ticket in and the gate opened, he put the "gum ticket" in which jammed the machine. The driver of the middle car couldn't get the machine to accept his ticket, so he used the button at the gate to call for help, giving Mike time to drive off. Lalo rammed the middle car, pushing it through the gate, but by the time he reached the road, Mike was gone.
7. The third phase of Kim's plan to make Jimmy look sincere involved Jimmy's participation on the Charles L. McGill Memorial Scholarship board. What word was used to describe the candidate that Jimmy alone selected?

Answer: Shoplifter

Howard brought the candidates in one-by-one, highlighting their achievements. At the end, he tallied the votes: "We have three scholarships to give and three front-runners". One candidate, Christy Esposito, only had one vote, and when Howard asked if there was any disagreement over the results, he noticed that Jimmy didn't look happy so he asked for his thoughts. Jimmy admitted that he was the one who had selected Christy, "and for what it's worth, I think we should give her another look".

The woman sitting next to him said, "Esposito. That's the shoplifter". Jimmy tried to plead Christy's case: "Yeah, she's had some trouble.

But she was new in town. She made some bad choices, and that was sophomore year. She's had two really strong years since then... My point is that maybe someone who's been in trouble, someone who doesn't have a perfect record, who's made mistakes and faced the consequences... maybe she brings something that the others don't". Howard was impressed: "Jimmy you make a hell of an argument", but when they re-voted, Christy still didn't get the scholarship. Jimmy caught up with Christy outside of the building and told her the results.

He also gave her a "screw them" pep talk which was as much for him as it was for her: "You made a mistake, and they are never forgetting it. As far as they are concerned, your mistake is who you are, and it's all you are... But it doesn't matter, because you don't need them. They're not going to give it to you? So what. You're going to take it. You are going to do whatever it takes... you are not going to play by the rules... and you are going to win... Remember, the WINNER takes it all". She looked perplexed, but when Jimmy asked if she understood, she said, "Yes, I think I do". Jimmy looked pleased with himself, but when he was leaving through the HHM parking garage, his car wouldn't start, and he broke down in tears.
8. When Lalo returned to the wire company store, how was he able to kill the clerk who was behind the glass partition?

Answer: He climbed through the ceiling tiles.

After losing Mike in the parking lot, Lalo returned to the wire store where he had first seen Mike. He pretended to be helping Mike and told the clerk that he wanted to see if there was something that "his friend missed": "Show me what you showed him".

But the clerk was suspicious: "Maybe you should just call your friend". The clerk then told Lalo that he couldn't help him and that he should call the police. The wire store phone rang, and the clerk took the call, turning his back on Lalo. When he turned around, Lalo was gone, but he saw that the ceiling tiles were askew.

He then heard thumping in the tiles above him, and Lalo jumped down, pulling his gun on the clerk. Next we saw Lalo watching the security tape with a copy of the wire documentation with Werner's name on it next to him. We also saw the clerk's twisted legs in the background; he was face down on the floor. Lalo saw Mike grab the travel brochures so he knew where Mike was headed.
9. What was Werner Ziegler's fate?

Answer: Mike shot him.

Werner made it to a motel; he was relaxing by a pool, wearing a Hawaiian shirt, green crocs and blue socks and sipping on a lime beverage. He received a phone call and assumed that it was his wife, but he heard a voice "calling on behalf of Gustavo Fring". Werner asked if Michael had shown Gus the letter: "I explained everything... The letter has specific instructions. My men will be able to continue a few days without me. The work will go on. Ask Michael." The voice, it turned out, was Lalo, and he now knew that Werner was working on something for Gus, so he told Werner that, "Michael's very busy... Do you remember what your instructions were?" Werner then said that "they are to finish clearing the debris and then begin the south wall". Mike then showed up and took the phone from Werner. He heard Lalo ask for the information to be repeated, but Mike didn't respond. Lalo then smiled, "Michael. Is that you?" Mike's mouth twitched, and he slammed the phone down. Werner started to apologize, but Mike wasn't hearing it: "Get dressed... I don't want to hear another damn word out of you".

Gus drove Werner to a deserted place in the desert above a city and told him to wait in the car while Mike called Gus and gave him the update. He also told Gus, "When I found him, he was on the phone with an interested party pretending to be one of your guys". He said that Werner hadn't told him anything useful, but Gus's expression changed once he heard this news. Mike said that he was bringing Werner in, but Gus told him to stay there. Mike knew what he meant and replied, "I'd go another way". Mike tried to argue, but Gus cut him off: "This discussion serves no purpose. Wait where you are". Mike took a look back at Werner and told Gus, "I'll take care of it". Mike looked miserable, but he carried on. When he asked Werner what he thought would happen, Werner said, "I thought I would come back, and my friend Michael would be very, very angry, but in time, he would understand and forgive". Mike told him, "It was never up to me". Werner wasn't grasping the seriousness of his situation. He was pleading for the chance to return to the hotel to see his wife, not realizing that he should have been pleading for his life at that point. Mike had to make it clear to him: "Werner, nothing you can say or do will make anyone trust you again". It was then that Werner understood: "I will go home. I will never breath a word of this ever. The money? I'll give all of it back. I will tell no one, I swear. It will be as if none of this ever happened". Mike then told him that he needed to call his wife and tell her to get back on the plane which he did. Mike told Werner that an accident would be staged so his wife would think that's what happened to him, and his men would be sent home. Werner then walked off into the desert, looking at the stars, and Mike shot him from behind.
10. What was Jimmy planning to read aloud at the license reinstatement appeal?

Answer: Chuck's letter to him.

Kim was working on Jimmy's speech to the reinstatement committee: "I know it's a lot but this is one time you do not want to wing it." Jimmy looked a bit down. Kim told him, "Jimmy, the hard part's done - reading room, scholarship, cemetery - by now, they've got to have heard about some of it... we've set up the dominoes, now you just knock 'em down". Jimmy told her, "I could say whatever I want - to the board, I'm still 'that guy'". Jimmy suddenly had an idea: "What if Chuck does the talking for me?" and he held up the letter that Chuck had left for Jimmy with his will.

When Jimmy was before the committee, he told them that he didn't have a prepared statement, but that he had Chuck's letter. He began to read it but then stopped and said that he couldn't do this: "This letter's between me and him. And it should stay that way". He then gave a beautiful, heart-touching speech about Chuck and their relationship, including the statement: "If you decide and I get to be a lawyer, I'll do everything in my power to be worthy of the name McGill". Afterwards, when Jimmy and Kim were out in the hall, they were celebrating. Kim said she knew that Jimmy had it in him, but she was talking about the emotions about Chuck. Jimmy however was celebrating his latest scam: "Did you see those suckers? That one [guy] was crying, he had actual tears!" Kim looked stunned; she had also wiped away a tear when Jimmy gave his statement. She bought it completely as his genuine feelings. When the clerk came to get Jimmy to fill out paperwork, he asked if she had a DBA (Doing Business As) form, "because I'm not going to be practicing under the name McGill". More shock for Kim: "Wait, Jimmy. What??" "It's All Good Man", Jimmy smiled as he walked away. Series co-creator Peter Gould stated that "It's telling that the last shot of the scene is not of Jim disappearing around the corner. It's Kim watching him and trying to understand what just happened. "
