Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Rowan Atkinson, of course, has played our magnificent hero in all four of his incarnations. In which series did Edmund have a beard?

Answer: Blackadder II

Hopefully you didn't select "Blackadder Goes Forth", because while he had a mustache in that series, he certainly didn't have a beard.
2. On a related note, in which series did Baldrick, played by Tony Robinson, have long hair?

Answer: Blackadder the Third

Baldrick, the Man with the Plan. "Blackadder the Third" is also notable as the only series in which Baldrick is revealed to have a name of sorts, dares to grievously insult his master, and gets to wear a really cool-looking hat.
3. Tim McInnerny played Lord Percy Percy in "The Black Adder" and "Blackadder II". He went on to play Captain Kevin Darling in "Blackadder Goes Forth", seemingly giving the third series a miss. Or did he? Which character did McInnerny play in a single episode of "Blackadder the Third"?

Answer: The Scarlet Pimpernel

In "Nob and Nobility," McInnerny played the Scarlet Pimpernel, also known as Frou Frou (a French fop) and Topper (an English fop). The actual Scarlet Pimpernel is a heroic character from a popular novel of the early twentieth century - fop by day, savior of reactionaries by night. Interestingly, his real name is Percy.
4. Hugh Laurie played the Prince Regent in "Blackadder the Third" and Lieutenant George in "Blackadder Goes Forth". Which murdering fiend did he play in "Blackadder II"?

Answer: Prince Ludwig

Evil Prince Ludwig the Indestructible appeared in the final episode, "Chains", which had what some might consider a downer ending. Hugh Laurie, soon to become a staple feature of "Blackadder" also appeared in the episode "Beer" playing Simon Partridge (aka "Farters Parters"), a harmless, flatulent alcoholic.
5. Stephen Fry played Lord Melchett in "Blackadder II", and his descendant General Melchett in "Blackadder Goes Forth". But whom did he play in a single episode of "Blackadder the Third"?

Answer: The Duke of Wellington

Lord Melchett, from "Blackadder II", was perhaps Fry's most gentle incarnation of the series. While he sometimes gave the impression that he would be happy enough to see Blackadder dead, he never actively tried to kill him. The same cannot be said for the Duke of Wellington, who tried and failed, thanks to a lucky cigarillo case. General Melchett, of "Blackadder Goes Forth" - well, enough said.
6. Miranda Richardson played Queen Elizabeth I in "Blackadder II" (taking a somewhat different approach to the character from Cate Blanchett). In "Blackadder Goes Forth" she was nurse Mary Fletcher-Brown. What was the name of the highwayman that she played in "Blackadder the Third"?

Answer: The Shadow

In "Blackadder II", the romance between Edmund and the Queen remained a thing of hints and sly flirtation. When Miranda Richardson returned for the third series, as the Shadow, she declared her love for him outright (she was lying, but hey). When she returned again, for the fourth series, they became a couple at long last.

In both cases, Edmund repaid her protestations of love by arranging for her to be executed.
7. Bafta award-winning actress Miriam Margolyes played the Spanish Infanta in "The Black Adder". She returned as Queen Victoria in "Blackadder's Christmas Carol". But whom did she play in a single episode of "Blackadder II"?

Answer: Lady Whiteadder

In the episode "Beer", Margolyes played Edmund's wealthy, puritanical aunt. Lady Whiteadder enjoys eating turnips, roasting Catholics, and slapping people in the face.
8. Bill Wallis played Sir Justin de Boinod, a murderous, drunken knight, in "The Black Adder". He also played Brigadier Proudfoot-Smith, a German-accented ace British spy, in "Blackadder Goes Forth". Whom did he play in a single episode of "Blackadder II"?

Answer: Ploppy the jailer

In the episode "Head", Wallis is the helpful, deferential warden of various doomed Catholics. Ploppy enjoys eating sausages, having a joke with Mrs Ploppy (no relation), and discussing his skin diseases.
9. Robbie Coltrane, of "Cracker" fame, played the Spirit of Christmas in "Blackadder's Christmas Carol". But whom did he play in a single episode of "Blackadder the Third"?

Answer: Samuel Johnson

Coltrane played this role in the episode "Ink and Incapability". It is debatable whether the real Dr Johnson was as violent and frightening as the "Blackadder" interpretation of him.
10. Rik Mayall played the modest and socially awkward Lord Flashheart in "Blackadder II" and "Blackadder Goes Forth". But whom did he play in a single episode of "The Black Adder"?

Answer: Mad Gerald

Mayall played Mad Gerald in the final episode, "The Black Seal". Gerald wasn't quite as swashbuckling as Lord Flashheart, but he was in prison after all. Who knows what he might have achieved if he'd gotten out.
