Arthur Haynes (1914-1966) served in the British Army during WWII and got his break on TV in 1956 in a Variety show series.
After a number of appearances he was granted his own show in 1957. His show was not only pure comedy, as over the years there were many musical guests including the Rolling Stones and the Dave Clark Five.

Danny Blanchflower was a Northern Ireland footballer who captained Tottenham Hotspur FC to their double in 1961.
When approached by Eamonn Andrews live on TV in 1961, he responded by the following, "I consider this programme to be an invasion of privacy".
Eamonn Andrews was actually the first surprised guest on the first aired show by the shows creator Ralph Edwards. From the second show Andrews was the host until 1964.

In the early days the show was criticised by many of the League Clubs as they thought it would affect their gate receipts. They came to an agreement with the BBC to only announce the match that was to be broadcast after all matches had been played that day.
