Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Michael Starling's profession?

Answer: Bike messenger

Starling works for a delivery company called Speedball Express and the CSIs find that he's been in trouble with the law for reckless bike riding and assaulting a cab driver. His boss seems to be more concerned with the whereabouts of the package Starling was delivering than his health. Danny knows that it's possible for another delivery person to have stabbed him because they may want more money from his route.
2. What was the murder weapon for the crime scene at the dog show?

Answer: Knitting needle

A local dog handler, Elaine Curtis, was found dead with a sewing needle in her back. The man who found the body, the show's dog medic, did not hear the victim dying from his nearby tent and this leads Mac to believe that he's not telling the truth. Mac finds a key in the victim's hand and Aiden finds the second knitting needle in another dog handler's purse (although she claims to know nothing of the murder).
3. The piece of metal found in Starling's wound is from a pair of pruning shears.

Answer: False

The metal piece is revealed to be one half of a pair of swiss army knife scissors. When Stella checks this she finds strands of wool on the object. This piece of metal also severed an artery in the victim's stomach causing him to lose a large amount of blood. On the bike and the victim's clothes, Danny and Stella find shavings and blood (as well as blood that isn't from the victim). Danny decides to use the victim's heart rate monitor to determine the speed, distance, and time of the victim's journey and discover a primary crime scene.
4. At what point in Starling's route did he get stabbed?

Answer: Mile 2.1

Danny and Stella use the Polar heart rate system to confirm the distance of Starling's route as well as its location through the city. At mile 2.1 however, there is a spike in Starling's heart rate, so they check the area for a crime scene. Meanwhile, Mac talks to Hawkes about the dog show victim.

The knitting needle punctured the aorta and there were no other major wounds on the body. There was a substance under the victim's fingernails and hairs on the body (they come from a dog- surprise, surprise). Also, there was a bite mark on the victim's side, but it's clear that it wasn't from a dog.
5. What type of dogs do Mac and Aiden investigate, regarding the set of bloody pawprints at the dog show crime scene?

Answer: Spaniels

After Aiden finds the pawprints at the crime scene, Mac uses a photo to determine that they came from a spaniel or hunting dog. At the dog show, Mac and Aiden select spaniels and their owners in order to determine which dog was a witness of the crime and it turns out to belong to a man named Alvin Marbert. Alvin confesses that he caused the bite mark on Elaine's body during their rough games (oddly involving Alvin's dog), but they couldn't reveal their secrets or else it would affect their lives in the dog show community. Alvin has a feeling that his dog will be best in show, but the other handlers are confident (and snooty) as well.
6. Where do Danny and Stella find Starling's murder weapon?

Answer: In the sewer

Using the route they mapped out, Danny and Stella find a location with freshly-dried cement explaining the cement on the bike and the back of Starling's shirt. They also find freshly painted signs to explain the fine mist of red paint on the victim's clothes. Stella finds a spot of blood on the white line of the street, and while taping off the crime scene she moves a trash can.

This allows her to notice the swiss army knife in the sewer. Using a telescopic magnet she fishes it out and finds that one blade of the scissors is broken off.
7. Stella finds fingernail scrapings on Starling's murder weapon. Who do these belong to?

Answer: Theodore Gates

Although Stella has a big feeling that Brett Stokes, another bike messenger, committed the murder, this theory is put aside when the results come back for the fingernail sample. The sample turns out to be from Theodore Gates who lives a block away from where Starling was stabbed in the street. Danny also discovers a lotion-like substance on the murder weapon.
Meanwhile, the substance under Elaine's fingernails in the other murder belong to the dog show medic, Ross Howell. He explains that she scratched him, but he found her dead.
8. According to the original owner of Starling's murder weapon, where was he during the time of the murder?

Answer: A model airplane convention

Gates explains that he lost the swiss army knife a week earlier because it dropped out of his pocket while he was fishing for change. He also produces a ticket for the model airplane show for an alibi. Angry, Danny returns to the crime lab and realizes that a lotion found on the knife could be found in "Trendy" magazine.
9. Did Brett Stokes murder Michael Starling?

Answer: No

After discovering that the lotion was from a magazine, Danny and Stella realize that the murderer was Mark Stutz who owns the newspaper stand outside the first murder scene. Gates left the knife on the newspaper stand while fishing for loose change and Stutz used it to cut open a box.

Unfortunately, this cut through the top magazine and through a packet of hand lotion. The wool found on the body also points to the murderer, Stutz, who happened to wear wool gloves as well.
10. Who killed Elaine Curtis?

Answer: Millie Hanford

Mac discovered that Elaine was poisoned when he sees a woman feed her dog with a baby bottle. Elaine did the same thing but broke the seal on the nipple of the bottle with her teeth. Someone else poisoned the bottle. Aiden and Mac also find that the locks on Elaine's suitcase were tampered with.

When Aiden and Mac find a hair on the bottle in the suitcase, it points to Millie Hanford, the owner of the sewing needles. Millie dropped some of her dog's medicine into the water to slow Elaine's dog down and make her lose, but Elaine bit the nipple of the bottle and she drank some of the water. Ironically, Elaine was also taking medication at the time and this caused her to get dizzy and fall onto the knitting needle impaling herself.
