Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jesse was one of the featured characters on the first few episodes of "Buffy" in season one. Do you remember how he met his demise?

Answer: Xander in the Bronze with a Stake

This happened in season 1,episode 2: "The Harvest". Although it is obvious that either The Master, Luke or Darla killed Jesse (Eric Balfour) and turned him into a vampire, that death happens offscreen so we'll never know "Who done it" for sure. Jesse met his onscreen demise in the Bronze. Technically Xander was just threatening him with the stake and Jesse was accidentally knocked into it by a girl who was running away.

Originally, Joss Whedon had wanted to include Eric Balfour in the opening credits to shock the audience and show that he wasn't afraid to kill a main character, but it proved to be too costly for the show's fledgling budget. Eric Balfour has been seen most recently as a recurring character on "The OC".
2. Glory a.k.a. "She Who Will Not Be Named" was the Big Bad of season five. Can you place the facts of death?

Answer: Giles in the Steel Yard with his Hands

Glory bit the dust in season 5, episode 22: "The Gift". In the 100th episode of "Buffy", Giles holds his hand over Ben's mouth and nose, effectively ending Glory's reign. "The Gift" was the last original episode to air on the WB. Glory was portrayed by actress Clare Kramer. Buffy, Willow and Xander all fought Glory with the weapons noted above, but none of them came close to killing her.
3. Angel was Buffy's first love, and she was heartbroken when he died. Do you know who was to blame?

Answer: Buffy in the Mansion with a Sword

The death scene that meets the criteria in all aspects is from season 2, episode 22: "Becoming, Part II". In one of the best scenes in the whole series, Buffy puts a sword through Angel's heart to save the world from the demon Acathla despite the fact that he regained his soul at the last minute. Faith came close to killing Angel in "Graduation Day, Part I", but he was restored by drinking Buffy's blood. Darla actually did kill Angel (or Liam) in an alley, but she used her fangs to kill him and her fingernail to cut her chest open for him to drink her blood.
4. Although he was a bit stuffy and overbearing, Quentin Travers didn't deserve to die. Can you place the scene of his murder?

Answer: Caleb at the Watcher's Council with a Bomb

Although we saw the Watcher's Council destroyed in episode 9, "Never Leave Me", we don't find out that Caleb (Nathan Fillion) was responsible until season 7, episode 18: "Dirty Girls". I'm sure both Buffy and Giles fantasized about killing him during "Helpless" and "Checkpoint", but they are the good guys after all, so it's no surprise that they were not the murderers. Quentin Travers was played by Harris Yulin.
5. Many an employee at Sunnydale's Magic Store has come to a bad end. Which of the follow scenarios is a true crime vignette?

Answer: Spike in the Magic Box with Fangs

The only one of these scenes with 100% accuracy is from season 3, episode 8: "Lover's Walk". Drusilla (Juliet Landau) did kill a Magic Store employee in season 2, but she didn't use a razor. She was the one who discovered that Jenny was trying to restore Angel's soul. Spike was at the Magic Store looking for an appropriate curse (Leprosy, anyone?) for Angel when he saw Willow gathering some supplies and had a change of plan.
6. What fate was met by Katrina Silber, the girlfriend of one of the recurring characters on "Buffy"?

Answer: Warren in the Basement with a Bottle

The character of Katrina (Amelinda Embry) was killed in season 6,episode 13: "Dead Things". Although the time-altering demon summoned by the trio makes Buffy think she accidentally killed Katrina, it was actually Warren who does her in when she realizes that he was using magic to control her. Similar to Faith's story arc in season 3, Buffy had a hard time dealing with the thought that she may have killed a human. Unlike Faith, Buffy's first thought was to turn herself in to the police. According to the Internet Movie Database, (www.imdb.com) Amelinda Embry has also worked under the name Amelinda Smith.
7. Living and working near the Hellmouth can prove fatal. Do you know what happened to Professor Maggie Walsh?

Answer: Adam in Lab 314 with a Skewer

Maggie Walsh left the mortal coil in season 4, episode 13: "The I in Team". Unfortunately for her, Adam made some adjustments and her animated corpse returned for "Primeval". Dr. Maggie Walsh was played by Lindsay Crouse. She appeared in 9 episodes during season 4 and has also had recurring roles on "Hack", "Providence" and "Dragnet".
8. Giles' old friend and nemesis Ethan Rayne made several trips to Sunnydale. Do you remember the details of his final visit?

Answer: Ethan was never killed, he's still among the living

The last we saw of Ethan was in season 4, episode 12: "A New Man". This episode featured Robin Sachs as Ethan Rayne returning to Sunnydale to warn Giles about the Initiative and turn him into a Fyarl demon. He was not killed for his final prank, but was taken into custody by the Initiative and sent to a secure facility in Nevada for rehabilitation.

He never returned to Sunnydale, that's for sure.
9. Herbert the SHS Mascot was featured in Season One. What were the details of his downfall?

Answer: Xander in the Student Lounge with his Teeth

Season 1, episode 6: "The Pack". Herbert was devoured by Xander and a group of students who had been inadvertently possessed by some hyenas on a field trip to the Zoo. Unfortunately the same fate befell Principal Flutie played by Ken Lerner. Luckily, (as I was reminded by some much sharper fans) Xander was NOT involved in the principal's death. Principal Snyder (Armin Shimerman) didn't appear until episode 9, "The Puppet Show", Natalie French (Musetta Vander) was the Praying Mantis Woman from "Teacher's Pet", and Pete (John Patrick White) was the chemically enhanced boyfriend in season 3's "Beauty and the Beasts".
10. Buffy had a lot of people menacing her in Season Five, one of whom was named Gregor. Do you remember who got rid of Gregor and how it was accomplished?

Answer: Glory in the Gas Station with a Hubcap

General Gregor, (Wade Andrew Williams) of the Knights of Byzantium was killed in season 5, episode 20: "Spiral". He was being held hostage by Buffy and Co. while they were hiding out from Glory. Gregor's only reason for living was to destroy the Key (Dawn).

He tried to convince Ben to kill Dawn without realizing that Ben was actually Glory. When Glory materialized, she took Gregor out of the picture with a frisbee-like hubcap before absconding with Dawn. It has been rumored that the scene in which the Knights attack the moving Winnebago is an homage to the movie "Stagecoach".
11. The first appearance of The Anointed One (Colin) was in Season One, "Never Kill a Boy on the First Date". Do you know the circumstances that made it certain that "School Hard" was his last?

Answer: Spike in the Factory with Sunlight

Colin was dispatched in season 2, episode 3: "School Hard". Notable as the first appearance of Spike and Dru, this episode ends with Spike throwing The Anointed One into a cage and raising it into the sunlight. Colin's arrival had been foreseen by The Master who believed that he would lead the slayer directly to him.

The Anointed One fulfilled this prophecy by doing just that in the aptly titled episode "Prophecy Girl". Colin was played by young actor, Andrew J. Ferchland.
12. Although she appears in the opening titles only once, Amber Benson as Tara Maclay was a regular cast member from season four until season six. What facts combined to end her life in Sunnydale?

Answer: Warren in the Yard with a Gun

In just a few shocking seconds at the end of season 6, episode 19: "Seeing Red", Tara was gone. Warren (Adam Busch) was trying to shoot Buffy in the yard below, but one of his shots was wild and pierced the upstairs window hitting Tara in the chest.

Her death was Willow's impetus for returning to Dark Magic and almost destroying the world. Amber Benson also wrote and produced an independent film, "Chance". Fellow Buffy actors James Marsters and Emma Caulfield were included in her cast.
13. Since Buffy's arrival in Sunnydale, Willow Rosenberg has been one of Buffy's closest friends. Willow has appeared in several incarnations and had many close calls over the years, but which of the following scenarios showed her onscreen death?

Answer: Oz in the Factory with a Piece of Wood

Luckily this only happened in the alternate reality of season 3, episode 9: "The Wish". This episode introduced Anyanka the vengeance demon who eventually becomes Xander's fiancee. Hurt by Xander's infidelity, Cordelia wished Sunnydale into a parallel universe where Buffy had never come to town.

In this reality both Willow and Xander were vampires working for the Master. Right before Giles saves the day and returns the world to normal, there is an incredible scene where VampXander dusts Angel, Buffy stakes Xander, Oz (still a good guy) kills VampWillow and finally The Master kills Buffy with a twist of her neck. Even though it's an alternate reality, it's a pretty chilling scene for any "Buffy" fan.
14. If you remember who Rocky was, you should be able to place the who/where/what of his death.

Answer: The Sluggoth demon on the Sidewalk with his Mouth

In season 7, episode 2: "Beneath You", Rocky was the ill-fated Yorkshire Terrier belonging to Nancy (Kaarina Aufranc). Poor Rocky was consumed by Nancy's ex, Ronnie, who had been changed into a Sluggoth demon by Anya (who had resumed her vengeance gig).

The episode title refers to the season's theme of "from beneath you it devours", but also references the season 5 episode "Fool for Love" in which Spike is told by both Buffy and Cecily that he is "beneath" them. "Beneath You" marks the episode in which Buffy learns that Spike now has a soul.

It is implied that the main factor in Spike's decision to reclaim his soul was an attempt to make himself worthy of Buffy's love and therefore no longer beneath her interest.
15. Season four's "Hush" was one of the most acclaimed episodes of the series. Do you know what conspired to turn The Gentlemen into The Gentlecorpses?

Answer: Buffy in the Clock Tower with a Scream

For season 4, episode 10: "Hush", Joss Whedon was nominated for an Emmy. "Hush" introduces the original "fairy tale" of the Gentleman. It is also notable for the first kiss between Buffy and Riley. In the absence of words, their mutual attraction was pushed to a new level.
16. Sweet was the villain of the musical episode "Once More, With Feeling". What was the context of his exit?

Answer: Sweet didn't die, he just returned to hell

Sweet made season 6, episode 7: "Once More, With Feeling" a treat for the viewers. After making mischief in Sunnydale and causing Buffy to reveal that she was ripped out of Heaven, the demon Sweet returns to his home in Hell, without Dawn (or Xander) as his queen. Sweet was played by Broadway veteran, Hinton Battle.
17. Jonathan may have been a "Superstar" in season four, but his death propelled the plot in season seven. How did it happen?

Answer: Andrew in the Basement with a Knife

Andrew killed Jonathan in season 7, episode 7: "Conversations with Dead People". The First Evil (disguised as Warren) told Andrew that killing Jonathan would make them all-powerful. In truth, the FE was trying to open the seal to allow the Turok-Han to escape. Later in season 7, Buffy makes Andrew confront his crime and uses his tears to close the seal in the episode "Storyteller". Jonathan was played by Danny Strong and appeared in 28 episodes of "Buffy".

He was in at least one episode of every season, with the exception of season five.
18. Anya Christina Emanuella Jenkins may have learned to be "Selfless" in season seven, but it didn't save her in the end. How did this former vengeance demon meet her end?

Answer: Bringer in the Hallway with a Reaper

Anya met her sad fate in season 7, episode 22: "Chosen", the final episode of the "Buffy" Series. She was the only core member of the group to die and stay dead. (Spike corporealized on season five of "Angel".) Anya ran from the pending Ascension in season 3, but stuck it out to the end with the opening of the Hellmouth in Season 7. Anya was played by Emma Caulfield from season 3 to season 7. Emma Caulfield is also remembered for playing Susan Keats on "Beverly Hills, 90210".
19. Billy Fordham was an old friend of Buffy's from Los Angeles. Although he reveals that he is dying of cancer, what facts combined to expedite his final death by other means?

Answer: Buffy in the Graveyard with a Stake

Season 2, episode 7: "Lie to Me", also showcased actress Julia Lee as the vampire wanna-be Chantrelle. This was Billy's only episode, but Chantrelle turned up again in the season 3 episode "Anne" as Lily (same character, new name) and took Buffy's middle name Anne by the end of the episode. Anne was also seen in an episode of "Angel".
20. As noted in the musical "Once More, With Feeling", Buffy Anne Summers has died more than once. Which of the scenarios below is the most accurate description of one of these deaths?

Answer: The Master in the Sunken Church with Water

Buffy's first death occurred in season 1, episode 12: "Prophecy Girl". As it had been foretold, The Master (Mark Metcalf) killed Buffy in the season 1 Finale. Unfortunately for him, he never read the part where she would be given mouth to mouth resuscitation and return to defeat him.

In season 3's "The Wish", The Master, not Darla, kills Buffy at the Factory with his hands. In season 5 ("The Gift") Buffy sacrifices herself to save the world by diving off the tower. In season 1's "Nightmares", Buffy's nightmare includes being buried alive by The Master.
