Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the South African born actor who co-starred in "Hancock's Half Hour" and was said to have the dirtiest laugh ever heard on TV?

Answer: Sid James

Just thinking of Sid James's laugh makes me laugh!

Sid James, born Solomon Joel Cohen, was born in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, South Africa.

After the second world war, he relocated to Britain, where he landed his first comedy role in "The Lavender Hill Mob".

He is best known for the "Carry on" series and was once described as having "a face like an unmade bed"! LOL!
2. If I were to mention the names Edina, Patsy and Saffy, which fab British comedy show would I be thinking of?

Answer: Absolutely Fabulous

"Absolutely Fabulous", in my opinion, is one of the funniest comedy of it's time.

First aired by the BBC in 1992, it tells the story of Edina Monsoon (played by Jennifer Saunders), a middle aged, twice divorced PR consultant, desperate to stay young and trendy.

Patsy (Edina's best friend, played by Joanna Lumley) is an alcoholic, drug-abusing middle aged woman who holds a position in a fashion magazine, which appears to involve no work at all!

Saffy, the long suffering daughter of Edina (played by Julia Sawalha) spends most of her time resolving the crises caused by her mother's and Patsy's lifestyles.
3. Which comedian said "Marriage is a wonderful institution, but who wants to live in an institution"?

Answer: Groucho Marx

Groucho Marx, known for his American quiz show called "You Bet Your Life", was a master of coming out with wise cracks.

During one of the episodes of "You Bet Your Life", one of the contestants was a woman who had borne eleven children.

According to various sources, but denied by Marx, he supposedly asked why such a large family? The contestant responded "I love my husband" to which he said "I love my cigar, but I take it out of my mouth once in a while!"
4. This British sitcom was written through four eras, but keeping the two main characters played by Rowan Atkinson and Tony Robinson. Can you name it?

Answer: Blackadder

The TV show ran for four series starting in the Middle Ages and ending during WWI.

Rowan Atkinson played Edmund Blackadder (a sometimes conniving and cynical man) and Tony Robinson (his not very bright sidekick) played Baldrick.

First aired by the BBC in 1983, it included memorable appearances by Tim McInnerny
Miranda Richardson, Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie.
5. One of my favourite American sitcoms' last episode, entitled "Goodbye, Farewell and Amen", was watched by over one hundred million viewers. Do you know which one?

Answer: M*A*S*H

"M*A*S*H", set during the Korean conflict, could make you laugh, think and cry.

Based around and in a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, the humour was satirical, anti-establishment and dark.

"Dallas", of course, was not a sitcom but there were times when it appeared to be!
6. Which American television sitcom had episodes which focused on sexual and drug abuse and racism?

Answer: Diff'rent Strokes

"Diff'rent Strokes" told the story of two young African-American brothers adopted by a wealthy white widower.

The show opened up a lot of social taboos which American society had not yet dealt with.
7. "Taxi", another award-winning American sitcom (and very funny), was set in a New York taxi rank. Who starred as the cruel and hard headed Dispatcher?

Answer: Danny DeVito

"Taxi", based in a taxi company's garage, evolved around the lives of cab drivers.
The show tackled many social issues including drug abuse, failed marriages and single parenthood.

Christopher Lloyd played the aging hippie whose brain had been scrambled by drugs.
Andy Kaufman played the immigrant, innocent mechanic.
Tony Danza played the failed boxer.
Judd Hirsch played the only driver who considered taxi driving a profession and not just a job to fill in the time until one's dreams came true!
8. Which British television comedian would come to mind if I mentioned the "Ministry of Silly walks", "Basil the Rat" and "A Fish Called Wanda"?

Answer: John Cleese

John Marwood Cleese was born on October 27, 1939 in Weston-super-Mare, United Kingdom.

As well as being and actor and comedian, he is also a writer and film producer.

Well-known for being part of the "Monty Python" team, my favourite role of his was Basil Fawlty in "Fawlty Towers".
9. In the British sitcom "2point4 children", what were the first names of Mr and Mrs Porter?

Answer: Ben and Bill

"2point4 children" was first broadcast by the BBC in 1992 starring Gary Olsen as Ben Porter and Belinda Lang as Bill Porter.

It was a comedy show about your 'average' family which had most that watched it rolling around in laughter. Their Christmas specials were also great. It ran until 1999, never losing it's magic.

Sadly, Gary Olsen died 2000 and the decision was made not to replace him, ending the show.
10. Which American sitcom had the setting at "Sacred Heart Hospital"?

Answer: Scrubs

"Scrubs" was created by Bill Lawrence and ran from 2001 to 2010. It told the story of the lives of employees at "Sacred Heart Hospital".

The series had a wide variety of music with the theme song, "Superman", sung by the American band Laslo Bane.
