Crichtonisms, Season 1 Trivia Quiz

Answer: little yellow bolts of light

This is one of my favorite Crichtonisms of all time, and it's from the first episode. Stealing a pulse pistol from one of the Peacekeepers, Crichton tries some classic action movie lines in order to escape. He is probably going to say "fill you full of lead", but has to settle for the more accurate "little yellow bolts of light".

Answer: Dagobah

This is an exchange between Crichton and Aeryn. Crichton: "Kinda like Louisiana. Or Dagobah. {Aeryn looks confused} Dagobah. Where Yoda lives." Aeryn: "Who's Yoda?" Crichton: "Oh, just a little green guy. Trains warriors." Aeryn: "Oh."

Answer: Hyundai

Crichton: "How fast can they go?" Aeryn: "Hetch seven." Crichton: "Hetch seven? That thing's a Hyundai. Why don't we stop playing hide and seek and just smoke 'em?"

Answer: "The Quiet Man"

Here's the full quote (Crichton never does manage to get Tavleks right). Crichton: "Fine, yes, you're right. We know almost nothing about the Tavloids." Aeryn: "Tavleks." Crichton: "Whatever. Tavloid...Tav... We do know they will pay us to haul cargo which they're not going to do if you go in there doing your John Wayne impression." Aeryn: "John Wayne? Who's that? A relative?" Crichton: "John Wayne. No, the big guy 'True Grit, The Searchers, The Cowboys, Genghis Khan.' Oh no, look, forget about 'Genghis Khan' everybody makes a bad movie."

Answer: Wile E. Coyote

Crichton watched a few too many cartoons when he was a kid. His Wile E. Coyote obsession comes into play again in the episode "Revenging Angel" when his comatose brain takes the shape of one big "Looney Tunes" cartoon.

Answer: Snow White

This reference is due to Volmae's disturbingly white complexion. Crichton: "We want our friends back." Volmae: "How dare you make demands?" Crichton: "Oh, give it a rest, Snow White."

Answer: Titanic

The actual quote references Leonardo DiCaprio's role in the 1997 movie "Titanic". D'Argo: "This ship is legendary. Even in my culture, it was thought invincible." Crichton: "Yeah, well, just ask Leonardo DiCaprio. Even the big ones go down."

Answer: Laurence Olivier

Maldis: "I got a lot o' names, John-boy, call me whatever pops your cork." Crichton: "Yeah. Right. You're a regular Laurence Olivier." Laurence Olivier is famous for his roles in many movies and stage plays.

Answer: Zhaan, D'Argo, Rygel

Here's the full quote: "Look, we may have a major problem. The map thing, NamTar's magic crystal? Well, Larry, Curly and Moe just found out that they can only use one of the maps. Two of 'em ain't going nowhere. I tell you, it's like a regular family feud up there." I don't think the Three Stooges would have cut off Pilot's arm.

Answer: Aeryn

This is a reference to the movie, "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid". Crichton: "I'm Butch. This is Sundance. We're the Hole in the Sky gang." Rorf: "Butch. And Sundance. I am Rorf." Crichton: "Worf?" Rorf: "Rorf!" Crichton's use of Worf is probably a reference to Michael Dorn's character on "Star Trek: The Next Generation".

Answer: Disney

Crichton's first experience with Unity comes in the episode, "Rhapsody in Blue". He expresses his reaction as eloquently as ever.

Answer: Cap'n Crunch

"Cap'n Crunch" is a nickname given to Crais in a later episode. Here is Crichton's full quote: "Oh, god, that is it. You are so damn smart. There's no time for stupid human anything. And I'm sick of it, Aeryn. I'm sick of Napoleon XVI. I'm sick of blue. I'm sick of tentacle boy. And guess what? I'm sick of you. I'm sick of this whole turd-burp end of the universe." Poor John's feeling a little homesick.

Answer: Silas

Here is Crichton's quote: "I don't give a damn if she was an axe murderer, Elvis. She was just talking to me." Silas does have some very Elvis-like facial hair, which probably sparked the reaction.

Answer: Happy Meals

This is also from the episode, "Durka Returns". Crichton must have had a bad reaction to McDonald's Happy Meals as a kid.

Answer: Alice

Crichton: "Okay, Alice. Once more into the looking glass." The title of the episode shares its name with the book by Lewis Carroll, who also wrote "Alice in Wonderland". Crichton says the quote as he is about to pop out of the yellow-light Moya by sliding down a ramp.

Answer: nausea

This is also from "Through the Looking Glass", Zhaan philosphizes about the interdimensional split that Moya is caught in during starburst. Zhaan: "I've always wondered what could be beyond height and width, depth and time." Crichton: "Nausea."

Answer: D'Argo

This is another hilarious exchange from "Through the Looking Glass" Crichton: "Just wait 300 microts then...forward." D'Argo: "I have no time-keeping device." Crichton: "One-Mississippi-one, one-Mississippi-two, one-Mississippi-three...300...forward." D'Argo: "One mippippippi... two mippippippi... three mippippippi... four mippippippi..."

Answer: "M*A*S*H"

This was probably harder if you had never seen the movie or television series "M*A*S*H". Hot Lips is the nickname given to Major Margaret Houlihan. Crichton uses this to refer to the peacekeeper scientist in this episode.

Answer: "Melrose Place"

Scorpius: "What is that, hmm?" Crichton: "I don't know. Kinda looks like an episode of 'Melrose Place'." Ben Browder had a small part on "Melrose Place", which is a spin off of the more popular "Beverly Hills 90210" from the early 1990s.

Answer: "Jerry Springer"

Zhaan: "John, I've made a new family here, surrounded by all of you. And now I sense it's coming to an end." Crichton: "Well, it's a...Jerry Springer kind of family. But for what's it's worth, Zhaan, you are family."
