Lieutenant Columbo first graced our screens in 1968 and starred in nearly 70 made-for-tv movies. The great Peter Falk played the Lieutenant, Falk sadly passed away in June 2011.
2. A favourite of mine is 'Starsky and Hutch'. Two police detectives of Southern California catching criminals with the help of a certain friend on the street. What was the nickname of this cool informant?

The role of Huggy Bear was played by Antonio Fargas. Starsky and Hutch ran from 1975 to 1979. Snoop Dogg took up the role in the 2004 film version.
3. The many towns and villages in the fictional county of Midsomer form the basis for each episode of 'Midsomer Murders', with some of the most bizarre methods of killing ever seen on TV. Who played the role of DCI Tom Barnaby from the show's beginning in 1997 to 2011 when the character retired?

Answer: John Nettles

John Nettles played Tom Barnaby for 14 years but this wasn't the first detective he played. Nettles made his name playing DS Jim Bergerac in the eponymous show 'Bergerac' during the 1980s.
4. Adrian Monk is a brilliant detective, but unfortunantly suffers from a sometimes debilitating illness. What is this, that was brought about by the murder of his beloved wife Trudy?

Answer: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Adrian Monk, played by Tony Shalhoub is a former detective turned police consultant in the San Francisco Police Department. Since the death of his wife, he has battled O.C.D. and a number of phobias.
5. No quiz about detectives would be complete with the fantastic Hercule Poirot. Similar to Adrian Monk in the sense he like things just so, in which novel by Agatha Christie do we first meet the dapper Belgian sleuth?

Answer: The Mysterious Affair At Styles

The Mysterious Affair At Styles was first published in October 1920 and centres on the death of Emily Inglethorpe, a frail, old but wealthy woman. The other three choices are all Poirot novels but came later.
6. Inspector Morse came from the mind of the wonderful Colin Dexter and was played to perfection by the much-missed John Thaw. What was the name of Morse's assistant, who was in many ways Morse's opposite, but yet worked so well with him?

Answer: DS Lewis

DS Lewis was played on screen by Kevin Whately and is from the north-east of England, whereas in the books Lewis is Welsh. After 'Inspector Morse' ended, Lewis got a spin-off show and a promotion to Inspector.
7. Theo Kojak was a police lieutenant in the NYPD, played by Telly Savalas. A trademark of the character was lollipops and he was rarely seen without one. But what started the detective on the lollies?

Answer: As a substitute for smoking

'Kojak' ran from 1973-1978. In the early seventies, the world was learning more about the dangers of smoking and subsequently cigarettes were banned from advertising. Though we see Kojak smoking in the very early episodes, the lollipops were an aid to help him quit.
8. 'A Touch Of Frost' hit UK screens in late 1992. Set in the fictional town of Denton in the Midlands, which actor (probably more known for his comedy roles) took up the part of the lead character Inspector William 'Jack' Frost?

Answer: David Jason

David Jason had starred in many comedy shows in the 1980s including 'Only Fools And Horses', 'Open All Hours', and 'A Bit Of A Do'. With 'A Touch Of Frost' he took on a grittier, more serious role and a whole new audience took to him.
9. Sherlock Holmes is probably the name people most link with the word 'detection' and over 125 years since he was first created, he's still many people's number one. Which of these items do you NOT associate with the character?

Answer: A pet cat

Sherlock Holmes lives at 221B Baker Street in London with his good friend and associate Doctor Watson and their landlady Mrs Hudson. Various actors have portrayed him on film and TV, my personal favourite being Basil Rathbone during the 1940s.
10. Cagney and Lacey ran from 1981-1988 and centred on two feisty female police detectives who lead completely opposite lives. In which American city was the show set?

Answer: New York City

Cagney and Lacey (played by Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly respectively) was set in a fictional precinct in Manhattan, New York. Christine Cagney is a single, career minded woman, while Mary-Beth Lacey is trying to find the right balance between raising a family and holding down such a demanding job.
