Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first Detour choice of the entire show took place in Zambia. Did all teams complete the same task?

Answer: Yes

Arriving at Batoka Gorge in Zambia, teams discovered that they needed to choose between 'Air' and 'Land'. In 'Air', teams needed to zipline across the entirety of the gorge, then swing down to the bottom on a towline to receive the clue. In 'Land', teams had the option to hike to the same clue box at the bottom, of course, it'd be more time-consuming to do this.

As it turns out, all eleven teams in this first leg chose to complete the 'Air' Detour tasks and complete one of the tallest drops in "The Amazing Race's" run. Following this, teams were instructed to head to Songwe Village and the Pit Stop. Between this, though, was an unaired Road Block consisting of the consumption of an ostrich egg.
2. The Detour of Leg 2, 'Near' and 'Far', required that teams take pictures of animals on safari. What animal was required for the 'Far' task?

Answer: Elephant

Departing from the first Pit Stop at Songwe Village and finding a clue at the city's small museum, teams found a Detour clue requiring a choice between 'Near' and 'Far' tasks. In 'Near', teams would need to travel to a nearby area to find and photograph three specific animals.

In 'Far', they would need to drive a farther distance to photograph a single elephant. Regardless, once the pictures were taken, teams needed to go to Mukini Village and participate in a ceremony during which they would show their picture(s) to a tribal chief.

He would then show teams that their next clue would take them to the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. All of the teams participating in this leg of the race completed the 'Near' Detour and photographed three animals, but Pat and Brenda did not complete the task since they took this Leg's Fast Forward clue by white-water rafting down the Zambezi River.
3. In Leg 3, the choice between 'Tough Climb' and 'Easy Walk' took teams to either the Pantheon or which other location?

Answer: Notre Dame Cathedral

In Leg 3, teams found their Detour tasks at La Grande Roue, a ferris wheel located down the street from the second Pit Stop, the Arc de Triomphe. Teams could choose between 'Tough Climb' and 'Easy Walk'. In 'Tough Climb', teams needed to go to Notre Dame Cathedral, climb all of the stairs to Quazimodo's bell tower, and ring the bell to receive their next clue.

In 'Easy Walk', teams had to walk on foot to Foucault's Pendulum in the Pantheon where their clue would be waiting for them. The trick behind this is that a similar pendulum is found at the Arts and Crafts Museum in Paris. Pat and Brenda got caught in this trap and inevitably arrived at the Pit Stop in La Baux des Provence in last place. Frank and Margarita, Rob and Brennan, Joe and Bill, and Pat and Brenda all completed the 'Easy Walk' task while Nancy and Emily, Lenny and Karen, Paul and Amy, and Frank and Margaretta complete 'Tough Climb'. Kevin and Drew did not complete the Detour, instead deciding to take the Fast Forward.
4. Leg 4, taking place in Tunisia, allowed teams the choice between 'Full Body Massage' and which other task?

Answer: Full Body Brew

In Leg 4, teams crossed the Mediterranean and arrived at Tunis, Tunisia. Once at Bab Bhar, teams received the fourth Detour task of the race, a choice between 'Full Body Massage' and 'Full Body Brew'. The only team choosing 'Full Body Massage', Paul and Amie, had to locate a massage parlor on an intricate map of the downtown area and receive a full massage from the employees.

The other task, completed by all other teams, forced teams to arrive at a coffee shop within the downtown area without using a map to guide them. Once there, they had to drink a cup of coffee for their next clue.

After both respective tasks, rather than receive Route Info, teams obtained a lighter depicting the Amphitheater of Thysdrus in El Djem. Here, teams found their Road Block task and the fourth Pit Stop.
5. In Leg 6, how many teams chose to complete the 'Hoof' Detour task in Italy?

Answer: Five

Exiting Tunisia after two legs, teams returned to Europe and arrived in front of the Colosseum in Rome, Italy to find their Detour clue for this leg of the race. In this Detour, teams needed to wait until the morning to complete either 'Foot' or 'Hoof'.

In 'Foot', teams needed to find a well-known statue of a foot while in 'Hoof', teams needed to find a lesser-known statue of a horse. While 'Foot' would be easier to find, 'Hoof' would have better accessibility to taxis immediately after. Lenny and Karen were the only team to complete the 'Foot' Detour task, and it may have partially been because of this that they ended up checking in at the Pit Stop in Sant' Agata Bolognese in last place. After the Detour, teams were instructed to head to Moderna, Italy to eventually find the Pagani Auto Factory and the Road Block clue.
6. In Leg 7 in Italy, teams could choose to complete 'Ride' or 'Glide'. What could teams ride in 'Ride'?

Answer: Bicycles

The first clue of this leg of the race (at Sant' Agata Bolognese's town center) was the Detour sporting 'Ride' and 'Glide'. In 'Ride', teams had to find a specific bike store, rent a bike, and ride it (using a map) to the clue box outside the train station in Ferrara, Italy.

In 'Glide', teams had to line up at an airfield and one team member would need to ride in a glider to receive the clue. This task was completed on a first-come first-serve basis. Rob and Brennan and Kevin and Drew completed 'Glide' while Nancy and Emily, Joe and Bill, and Lenny and Karen completed the 'Ride' task. Frank and Margarita did not complete the Detour, instead opting to complete the Fast Forward task by finding a clue around the moat of Castello Estense in Ferrara. All teams, after the completion of their respective tasks, were required to take a train to Rome and fly to Delhi, India to find the Road Block at Red Fort.
7. Which team was eliminated from the game because they did not complete the Detour task in Thailand in Leg 9?

Answer: Nancy and Emily

Teams departed from India in the beginning of Leg 9 and made their way to Bangkok, Thailand's Temple of Dawn to find the Detour task, a choice between 'Public' and 'Private'. In 'Public', teams needed to take a bus to Kanchanaburi to find the Road Block clue at a Buddhist monastery, but in 'Private', teams had the option of searching for a private car in a rather large area containing parked cars. With only a license plate number to guide them, Frank and Margarita are the only team to successfully complete the task while Rob and Brennan and Kevin and Drew take the bus.
Bill and Joe and Nancy and Emily both attempted to claim the Fast Forward at the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, but Nancy and Emily were unsuccessful in obtaining it. Frustrated, the two gave up in trying to find their car and decided to take a taxi to the Road Block, breaching the rules and incurring a 24-hour time penalty. Surprisingly, Bill and Joe, who decided to stop at a hotel for a cup of tea rather than take a private car to the Pit Stop at Tiger Cave Temple in Krabi, arrived many, many hours after Nancy and Emily checked in at the Pit Stop. Despite the fact that their error left them in last place, many hours behind, the penalty secured their position in the race.

8. The 'Volley'/'Rally' Detour task of Leg 11 occurred in which country?

Answer: China

Following the final four teams' tasks in Thailand (and sealing the fate of the third and fourth place teams for the most part), everyone made their way to China in Leg 11, and the Top Pavilion of Jingshan Park in Beijing. Here, the Detour provided was a choice between 'Volley' and 'Rally'.

In 'Volley', teams had to find a certain location at which they had to play ping-pong against an expert local player. Once five wins were counted, the next clue would be given. Frank and Margarita and Rob and Brennan finished this task.

In 'Rally', teams needed to take a variety of different modes of transportation to get the next clue. Kevin and Drew and Bill and Joe ended up taking a bus, motorcycle, and rickshaw to get to their clue. After this task, teams had to complete an appetizing Road Block at the Donghuamen Night Market before heading to the Pit Stop at Tiantan Park's South Gate.
9. The Leg 12 Detour was a choice between 'Flat' or which other task?

Answer: Steep

After retrieving a clue at Tiantan Park, teams headed to the Detour task at the Great Wall of China's Juyong Pass. This choice between 'Flat' and 'Steep' forced teams to choose between a flatter, but longer trail down the wall or a steeper, but shorter trail in the other direction. All three teams inevitably chose 'Steep' for time purposes.

This was the final Leg of the race in which a Detour task was completed outside the United States. Following the Detour, teams were instructed to get to Beijing International Airport and fly to Anchorage, Alaska to find Scotty Lake and North Country Bed and Breakfast. Because of the time gap between the second and third teams, Joe and Bill had to complete the 'Flat'/'Steep' Detour nearly twenty-four hours after the first and second place teams.
10. Which Detour task in the final Leg of the race, Leg 13, was not completed by any of the participating teams?

Answer: Horse Power

Departing from the final Pit Stop of the race, a wilderness cabin in the Alaskan forests, teams were told to snowshoe to their Detour clue at Takosha Lodge. Once there, a choice between 'Horse Power' and 'Dog Power' was given. 'Horse Power', the neglected task, forced teams to take a long route on a snowmobile to reach a clue box while 'Dog Power', a slightly slower task, would take them down a shorter route.

After the Detour, teams completed the final Road Block task at Fish Lake. While Rob and Brennan and Frank and Margarita completed 'Dog Power', the final Detour task of the race, Joe and Bill were too far behind to catch up.

When they reached Takosha Lodge they received a clue notifying them that Rob and Brennan crossed the finish line in Flushing Meadows Park, New York.
