Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first Leg of the race, only one team chose to complete the 'Beach' Detour task. Which team was it?

Answer: Peggy and Claire

Arriving at the top of Sugarloaf Mountain in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, teams needed to choose between 'Mountain' and 'Beach'. In 'Mountain', teams needed to rappel 590 feet down the side of Sugarloaf Mountain to the ground below. Although the task was more physically demanding, teams would be able to complete it quicker than the other.

In 'Beach', teams needed to travel to Ipanema Beach, find a specific lifeguard station, and using only a picture, find the girl who the song "The Girl from Ipanema" was based on.

The task was further away, but teams completing it wouldn't have to do the more dangerous task. Peggy and Claire were the only team to attempt the 'Beach' Detour, and though they were near the end of the pack for the most of the first leg, they arrived at the Pit Stop in tenth place, beating out Deidre and Hillary.
2. In Leg 2, all ten participating teams attempted which Detour task?

Answer: Freak Out

Leg 2, taking place in Rio de Janeiro and Foz do Iguacu, gave racers the choice between 'Freak Out' and 'Seek Out' for its Detour task. In 'Seek Out', teams needed to use a metal detector on the beach and search for their clue in a marked off area. Because of the nature of the task, it was more time-consuming and menial. None of the teams attempted to do it, instead deciding to complete the 'Freak Out' task.

This involved teams using hang gliders to float from Pedra Bonita Mountain to Sao Conrado Beach where they would find their next clue. 'Dance' and 'Deliver' were featured as Detour tasks in the third leg of the race in South Africa.
3. All teams participated in the 'Slide' Detour task of Leg 4 in Namibia.

Answer: True

In Leg 4, teams made their way to the dunes of Namibia for a Detour task at the Matterhorn Sand Dune outside Swakopmund. Once teams climbed to the top of the dune, they found the clue asking for a choice between 'Slide' or 'Stride'. In 'Slide', all participating teams needed to hop on top of a sandboard and slide down the side of the dune on their stomachs at high speeds. Once at the bottom, team members would receive their next clue telling them to head to Spitzkoppe to find the 'General Dealer'. Shola and Doyin were the only team members unable to reach the Detour before it closed, were unable to participate, and were subsequently eliminated before completing the most of the leg's tasks.

In 'Stride', teams could have avoided sliding down the dune by walking across its back side to another cluebox although this would've taken much longer.
4. In the 'Confusion Later' Detour task of Leg 5, teams needed to buy a paper model of what to burn?

Answer: Car

In Leg 5, teams proceeded to Thailand and the city of Bangkok. Upon reaching Erawan Shrine, teams had to choose between 'Confusion Now' and Confusion Later'. In 'Confusion Now', teams needed to navigate the streets of Bangkok to find a relatively specific water taxi.

After this difficult task, they needed to navigate their way to a bird market and set free a cage of birds to find their clue. Cyndi and Russell, Chris and Alex, Mary and Peach, and Tara and Wil completed this task. In 'Confusion Later', teams needed to go to Chinatown and purchase a paper car and then burn it in the furnace of a specific temple, Wat Leng Nei Yi, to get their clue.

Many teams had to do this more than once because they burnt it at the wrong site. Blake and Paige, Oswald and Danny, and Gary and Dave completed this task.

After this Detour, teams needed to make their way by bus to Ratchaburi and the Wat Kao Chong Pran temple.
5. In Leg 7, the final clincher for which team attempting the Detour resulted in their elimination?

Answer: Mary and Peach

During Leg 7, which took teams to Hong Kong, Mary and Peach had tried to take the Fast Forward to maintain their first place lead (gained during Leg 6). During the Detour task, a choice between 'Herbal Tea' and 'Wishing Tree', teams had to choose whether or not to navigate the streets of Hong Kong to find a small tea shop and drink a very bitter tea, or cast a wish at a very far wishing tree, which teams would need to ride a taxi to reach. Only Oswald and Danny took the 'Wishing Tree' task while Gary and Dave took the Fast Forward. Mary and Peach, already at an end at this point in the race, ended up attempting the Detour and painstakingly took down their drinks before vomiting.

The two didn't need to finish the Road Block- they were already too far behind.
6. In the eighth leg of the race, players could choose between two Detour options: 'Dragon' or what?

Answer: Lion

Continuing through Hong Kong, players made their way to Stanley, Hong Kong to find their Detour task at the Murray House. Once there, the five teams chose between 'Dragon' and 'Lion'. In 'Lion', teams needed to don a two-man lion costume and parade through the streets on a two and a half mile long course to reach their clue.

In 'Dragon', on the other hand, teams needed to hop into a dragon boat and paddle around a track a quarter of the length of the 'Lion' course to a clue box along the shoreline. Oswald and Danny and Blake and Paige completed 'Lion' while Gary and Dave, Tara and Wil, and Chris and Alex completed 'Dragon'. Teams then made their way to Sydney, Australia.
7. In Leg 9 near Coober Pedy, Australia, where did teams complete the 'Heat Up' Detour task?

Answer: A golf course

Heading north into the outback of Australia, teams made their way to Cobber Pedy, receiving their Detour clue from the Metal Tree at the Big Winch in the desert. This was a choice between 'Heat Up' in which teams were able to go play three holes of the world's hottest golf course, the Coober Pedy Golf Club (which was more confusing than initially let on), or teams could choose 'Cool Down' in which they had to find an opal mine near the town and find an example of an opal in a pile underground and have it verified by a foreman in order to receive the next clue. Blake and Paige and Gary and Dave finished the 'Heat Up' Detour task while Tara and Wil and Oswald and Danny completed 'Cool Down'. Chris and Alex took the Fast Forward back in Sydney.
8. In Leg 10 in New Zealand, all players involved completed the 'Quick Jump' Detour.

Answer: True

All four teams at this point in the race made their way to the Nevis Highwire Platform over top the Nevis River, making it the third-highest bungee jumping platform in the world. In 'Quick Jump', players had to make their way to the middle of the platform and perform a tandem bungee jump into the ravine below. All players decided to complete this task knowing it would take the least amount of time.

In the alternate task, 'Long Hike', players would need to walk down the cliffsides in order to retrieve their clue at the bottom.

This would have taken a much longer time.
9. In Leg 11, which Detour task required a shorter distance to cover by the specific activity used?

Answer: Climb

In Leg 11, teams progressed through Northern New Zealand arriving at 'The Lost World', a large underground area in the Waitomo Cave system. Racers had to choose to complete 'Drop', a task which required members to rappel a distance of 350 feet, or 'Climb', a task which required a 100 foot climb down a ladder. All in all, despite the distance, 'Drop' would've been the faster choice due to the variation of speed down the line. All three teams participating (Blake and Paige, Chris and Alex, and Oswald and Danny) decided to complete this task before moving on while 'Climb' was left untouched.
10. During the race's final Detour task in Leg 12, all of the teams chose to search for what coloured pineapple?

Answer: Yellow

In this final Detour task, teams arrived at a Pineapple Field in Maui, Hawaii had to choose between 'Bike' and 'Walk'. In 'Bike', teams would've needed to mount up on a mountain bike and travel around the field looking for a single red pineapple containing their clue.

In 'Walk', however, teams proceeded on foot to look for one of four yellow pineapples containing the same clue. All three teams in the race, Tara and Wil, Chris and Alex, and Blake and Paige, took part in the 'Walk' Detour, playing the odds of finding the yellow pineapples faster.
