Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Gave ABC its first daytime ratings win over CBS and NBC

Answer: The Beatles

Capitalizing on the popularity of the British supergroup The Beatles, ABC first aired this cartoon of the same name on September 9, 1965, and it became an instant smash providing the network with its first daytime ratings victory over both CBS and NBC for that year.

"The Beatles" was a show which took John, Paul, George, and Ringo on various adventures and incorporated two of their popular hits during its 30-minute airing. This format was later picked up by other cartoons based on real musical acts like the "The Jackson 5" and "The Osmonds" in the early 1970s. The voices of the bandmembers were done by two people, Paul Frees (John & George) and Lance Percival (Paul & Ringo).

"The Beatles" remained on air until 1969.
2. Teenage roller derby skaters

Answer: Bailey's Comets

Originally airing on CBS in 1973, "Bailey's Comets" was a response to the roller derby fad that was popular at that time. The show followed a group of teenagers participating in a race on roller skates for a one million dollar prize. Following clues which rhymed, the teams could be sent anywhere on earth (or the universe).

The show lasted two seasons with the second season completely comprised of reruns of the previous year.
3. Teens rode a flying camel

Answer: Shazzan

Premiering on CBS in September 1967, "Shazzan" was a cartoon which centered around siblings Chuck and Nancy who were mysteriously transported back to ancient Egypt where they found a magical ring which had been broken in half. When they touched object together and shouted the name inscribed on it, "Shazzan!", a giant genie appeared which would do their bidding.

Along with Shazzan and their flying camel, Kaboobie, the team would fight against the evils of the day all in an effort to gain the mystical objects which would return the siblings back to their own time, but unfortunately, Chuck and Nancy never found them. The show ended in 1969.
4. A microscopic team of adventurers

Answer: Fantastic Voyage

A direct spinoff from the 1966 movie starring Raquel Welch, ABC rolled out this cartoon in 1968, which followed the adventures of a team which included an astronaut, a doctor, a scientist, and a wizard. Ted Knight of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" lent his voice to the character of US Commander Johnathan Kidd, leader of the crew.

Working for the Combined Miniature Defense Force, the team would be sent on missions at microscopic size which they would need to complete within 12 hours or be stuck forever at that height. The show only lasted a single season.
5. The Number One Super-Guy

Answer: Hong Kong Phooey

One of the most popular characters to grace Saturday morning television during the mid-1970s was Hong Kong Phooey, a bumbling superhero who was a police department janitor in his secret identity of Penrod (Penry) Pooch. Phooey was a martial artist who got his maneuvers from his 'Hong Kong Book of Kung Fu' and would fight the criminals who plagued the city. Unfortunately, he wasn't a very good martial artist or detective so his pet cat, Spot, would always end up solving the crimes and capturing the bad guys, but somehow, Phooey would always seem to get the credit.

The show only lasted a single season and featured the voice of the great Scatman Crothers (Hong Kong Phooey) and Joe E. Ross (Sarge), who had starred in "Car 54, Where Are You?" a decade earlier. The theme song was very catchy and really exaggerated Phooey's prowess by stating that he was "the number one super guy, faster than the human eye". But, you had to give him an 'A' for the effort.
6. Their pet turned invisible when he was scared

Answer: Goober and the Ghost Chasers

September 1973 saw the debut of Ted, Gilly, Tina, and their pet dog, Goober, in the show "Goober and the Ghost Chasers". The cartoon was a direct mirror of "Scooby Doo" as the team was also investigators of strange occurrences much like Daphne, Freddie, Velma, and Shaggy.

The biggest difference here, though, was Goober's ability to turn invisible whenever he was frightened or scared. However, this tweak could not save the show from being cancelled after a single season, although it did limp through Sunday mornings during 1974, rerunning the same episodes as the previous season.
7. This cartoon's villain was called the Hooded Claw

Answer: The Perils of Penelope Pitstop

Paul Lynde, who played Uncle Arthur on the long-running show "Bewitched", voiced the Hooded Claw on the Saturday morning cartoon "The Perils of Penelope Pitstop" in 1969.

A spin-off of the cartoon "The Wacky Races", Penelope always found herself in the clutches of the Hooded Claw, who was in actuality, Sylvester Sneekley, her appointed guardian, who was trying to take over her inheritance. Her protectors, The Ant-Hill Mob, would always come to her rescue and foil Sneekley/ Claw's plans.

The show was off the air by the time the 1970 season came about.
8. This cartoon took place in Philadelphia

Answer: Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids

One of the longest-running and best-loved shows in CBS's history, "Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids" debuted in 1972 and lasted until the 1984-85 season. The cartoon went through a couple of variations, like "The New Fat Albert Show" in 1979, and "The Adventures of Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids" in 1984 with new change adding a new segment to the show, like the 'Brown Hornet', a superhero the kids watched on television (1979) and 'Legal Eagle' (1984), an eagle that dispensed wisdom to the animals who lived in Pine Forest which, coincidentally, tied into the main show's episode.

Taking place in a Philadelphia, PA (USA) neighborhood, the show revolved around a group of African-American teens living in the city's poorer section (Fat Albert, Rudy, and Mushmouth to name a few of them). Loosely based on the childhood of comedian Bill Cosby, the show focused on putting forth morally-strong and positive messages which transcended race and could be understood by anyone (bullying, cutting school, and being accepting of other cultures were a few of the types of themes the show dealt with). Bill would say in the show's opening theme song that there would be "....music and fun and, if you're not careful, you might learn something before we're done"; at the very least, the episodes often gave you something to think about and discuss with your friends.
9. Web Woman, Superstretch, and Microwoman were part of this show

Answer: Tarzan and the Super 7

"Tarzan and the Super 7" premiered on CBS in 1978 and was a 90-minute cartoon made up of five other shows, each about seven minutes long, that comprised the Super 7. The show was actually "Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle", from 1976, with the other adventurers added in to give the show a new look since Tarzan's episodes were mostly re-cycled from the previous two seasons.

The Super 7 were made up of Manta and Moray, who protected the sea; Web Woman, who's powers only remotely mirrored her more popular male counterpart, Spider-Man, with a huge difference being that she had the ability to control all the world's insects; Superstretch and Micro Woman, who were a married superhero team; Freedom Force, which was a team comprised of heroes from the mists of time, like Merlin, Sinbad, and Hercules; Jason of Star Command, which was the only live action show of the group and was the only segment that would take up a full 30-minutes. It starred James Doohan (Scotty, from the original "Star Trek" series).
10. This hero was always "...up and at 'em"

Answer: Atom Ant

"The Atom Ant Show" began on ABC in 1965 along with "Granny and Precious Pup" and "The Hillbilly Bears" making up the 30-minute cartoon. Possessing many Superman-like powers (super strength, speed, invulnerability, etc...), Atom Ant would be called upon to fight the fiendish villains who terrorized his city and he always came out on top.

In 1967, fellow Hanna-Barabera character Secret Squirrel was paired with mighty mite to form "The Atom Ant/ Secret Squirrel Show", but the 'team-up' only lasted a season.
