Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Scientist Sam Beckett develops the first link to successful time travel in 1995 within the traveler's own lifetime. But in Sam's first attempt he ends up in someone else's body and life and no method back to the present. Debuting in 1989, this show is ______.

Answer: Quantum Leap

"Quantum Leap" was a show I discovered late, but it appeared on USA Network in pseudo-syndication. Five shows a week allowed me to catch up on the history of the show. Scott Bakula played Sam Beckett with panache, and his ability to work with essentially a different character each episode showed his range.
2. A family with four sons can be pretty hectic. But if one of the sons is a certified genius directly telling us, the TV audience, his innermost thoughts and opinions of the mayhem around him, it makes for an intriguing premise. Debuting in 2000, this show was _____.

Answer: Malcolm in the Middle

Frankie Muniz played Malcolm (no last name, it was never revealed much like the city the family lived in) during the formative years of both his and his character's lives. It broke the fourth wall allowing Malcolm to talk straight to the viewer at any point.
3. Medical researcher Dr. David Banner loses his wife in a car accident. His research in the field of superhuman strength failed him in his attempts to save his wife. Later research overdosed him with high levels of gamma radiation, and now he experiences a metamorphosis whenever he gets angry. Debuting in 1978, this show is _____.

Answer: The Incredible Hulk

"The Incredible Hulk" differed a bit from the comic books. The Hulk was still green but not as enormous as depicted in the comic books. And the show took a cue from the 1960's show "The Fugitive" in that every episode he would manage to get away from authorities trying to capture the Hulk because of alleged murders he was suspected of but had not committed. Bill Bixby played David Banner and 6'7" (2 meters) tall bodybuilder Lou Ferrigno played the Hulk.
4. Set in Baltimore during the midst of the drug crisis on the streets, it followed everyone's struggles in the crisis: dealer v. dealer, beat cop v. gang member, city council v. police force, drug kingpin v. kingpin, etc. With a huge cast and no principal parts, you never knew who would be on for an episode. Debuting in 2002, this show is _____.

Answer: The Wire

"The Wire" makes many critics' lists as one of the top shows of all time. In each of the five seasons a different plot was released, yet still relating to the original story. I got into this one after it had left the air, but it became an entire month of binge watching during the summer of 2014.

It never was a platform for an actor to vault their career nor did it earn any cast member an Emmy nomination. But its insistence on showing the mundane actions of life in the inner city as well as the extraordinary made it one of the most real shows on television.
5. Brought to a secluded land void of any civilization, your job on the show is to maintain civility with your fellow tribe mates, all the while striving to win challenges that allow you to continue in the game. It stills maintains the original motto of 'Outwit, Outplay, Outlast'. Debuting in 2000, this show is _____.

Answer: Survivor

"Survivor" spawned an exponential number of imitations after its wildly successful debut. While nothing will match the success of the first season of "Survivor" (it gained 51 million viewers for its season finale), it is easily the most successful network reality show, lasting sixteen years and counting.

Many networks got on the bandwagon after "Survivor's" success, but no network could recreate the perfect combination of human interest and competition. I watched this show religiously for eight seasons. I still enjoy it when I can but schedules prevent me from keeping up like I used to.
6. A chemistry teacher develops lung cancer, and his insurance can't cover his last resort treatments. Running the numbers, he realizes that with his chemistry experience, if he were to manufacture methamphetamine for a short time, he can make enough money to cover his bills, plus enough to take care of the rest of his family if he doesn't make it. Debuting in 2008, this show is _____.

Answer: Breaking Bad

"Breaking Bad" aired on AMC Network for five seasons, and is one of the most highly regarded shows in history. On my personal list, I have never seen anything on the air that was better. Bryan Cranston (also in "Malcolm In The Middle") won an incredible four Emmys, and made television lead actors rejoice when the show went off the air, as he was all but unbeatable in the category. "Better Call Saul" is actually a spinoff of "Breaking Bad".
7. Hosted by Sarah Purcell, John Barbour, Skip Stephenson and Byron Allen, this show went across the country reporting on the lighter side of people's lives, whether it be the rise of break dancing in the boroughs of New York or the man who invented the gas powered walker, it served as entertainment. Debuting in 1979, this show is _____.

Answer: Real People

"Real People" was a combination of talk show and reality show and was a hit for NBC when it needed one. It spawned several imitations for a couple of years. Others to host the show were "Best In Show"s Fred Willard and "A Christmas Story"s Peter Billingsley.
8. A mafia boss deals with the delicate balance of his criminal work life and his suburban New Jersey home life. It gets so intense he relegates himself to going to therapy. Debuting in 1999, this show is _____.

Answer: The Sopranos

I was lucky enough to get into this show right from the pilot episode. James Gandolfini was unsurpassed in his portrayal of Tony Soprano. "TV Guide" has named this show the best in television history. I may not agree, but it's in my top three. It ran for six seasons.
9. New York Detective Sam Tyler, in the midst of a case in 2008, gets run over by a car, and wakes up in 1973. He's still a detective, and still at the same precinct, but everyone around him is different. Between 1973 cases and the personnel around him, he's just trying to get back to his original time. Debuting in 2008, this ABC show is _____.

Answer: Life On Mars

"Life On Mars" only lasted one season, but I loved it. A great cast featuring Harvey Keitel and Michael Imperioli, it left me wondering most of the time where the show was going to go. It was a remake of a similar show in Great Britain. This show inspired me to write three quizzes back when the show was on. If you're familiar with the show, give them a look.
10. This show dealt with the everyday life in the law firm of McKenzie, Brackman, Chaney and Kuzak. It stayed current with the social and cultural ideologies of the time and was not afraid to tackle controversial topics such as abortion, domestic violence, and AIDS. Debuting in 1986, this show is _____.

Answer: L.A. Law

"L.A. Law" came from Steven Bochco, the same man who brought us "Hill Street Blues". "L.A. Law" had a large cast of relative unknowns with some good accolades coming into the show, and the stellar writing got several members of the cast Emmy Awards. I got into this show late as well but caught up on some weekend marathons on some NBC-owned cable networks.

It lasted for eight seasons, winning the Best Drama Emmy four times.
