Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Medical school student

Answer: Mary

Mary, the second eldest child in the Bradford family, was studying to be a doctor for much of the series. She was often stressed out about her studies, and was pleased when her older brother moved out so she could take his room and have the space to herself to study. Mary was played by Lani O'Grady, who was born in northern California in 1954. Lani left acting to become a talent agent before passing away in 2001 at age 46.

She was the first of actors who played Bradford children to pass away.
2. Dancer, brunette

Answer: Elizabeth

Elizabeth was the youngest of the Bradford girls. For much of the series, she was a student, first in high school and then college. One episode centered on Elizabeth's desire to go to an out-of-state college with a strong dance program, though her family couldn't afford the tuition.

She was played by Connie Needham. Connie met her husband on the "Eight is Enough" set; he was a set designer.
3. Journalist, named after mother

Answer: Joanie

Joanie was the second eldest daughter and was interested in acting for much of the series. She eventually became a journalist like her father, though at a television station rather than for a newspaper. Joanie was played by Laurie Walters, a native San Franciscan.
4. Eldest, contractor

Answer: David

David was the eldest of the children and the focus of many of the storylines. His character moved out of the family home at the opening of the show, a seismic change in the Bradford world. Throughout the series, his siblings would visit him at his apartment when they had problems at home. David was a general contractor.

He was played by Grant Goodeve, who also sang the opening song, though Mark Hamill played David in the pilot episode. Grant was born in Connecticut and moved to Hollywood in his early 20s.
5. Athletic, married Merle the Pearl

Answer: Susan

Susan was the fourth eldest and the third girl, a strawberry blonde who liked sports. In later episodes, she married Merle Stockwell, a professional baseball player who went by the name Merle the Pearl. Susan was played by Susan Richardson, a Maine native who later moved to Pennsylvania.
6. Youngest, blonde hair

Answer: Nicholas

Nicholas was the youngest of the Bradford children. Many of the episodes related to his feeling left out of the lives of his older siblings, and there was a two-part storyline in which he ran away. Nicholas was played by Adam Rich who was eight years old when he started on "Eight is Enough." He grew up in southern California.
7. Briefly moved out with sisters, blonde

Answer: Nancy

Nancy went through many jobs on the show, from telegram singer to model to day care worker to gas station attendant and was often the center of the more comedic storylines. She was played by Dianne Kay, who was born in Tucson and retired from acting in the 1990s.
8. Second boy, named after father

Answer: Tommy

Tommy was the second son and shared a room with his little brother, to whom he often proffered advice. As a teenager through the series, Tommy and his friends often dealt with teenage TV-issues of the time, such as mental illness, drug use, and teenage pregnancy. Tommy was played by Willie Ames, a native to southern California who went on to co-star on fellow teen-idol Charles Baio in "Charles in Charge" starting in 1984.
9. Lawyer, David's wife

Answer: Janet

In the first year of the show, David met a lawyer, Janet. The lived together -- scandalously, according to their parents -- before marrying. They had a double wedding with another Bradford sibling.
10. Nicholas's friend

Answer: Irving J. Moore

It was a bit odd that Nicholas's friend was always referred to with his full name, complete with the middle initial. But Irving J. Moore was the name of one of the series's most frequent directors, so the writers gave his name to this minor character. Irving was seen in a handful of episodes, including one in which Nicholas and Irving made multiple crank calls, which one could do before every phone had built-in caller ID.
