Sid has made Gary the vice president at his dealership, Knots Landing Motors. Gary tells Richard that he's an alcoholic, but no one seems to understand what that means because everyone gives Gary champagne. He's reluctant with the first glass, but after Val expresses concern, Gary says he's OK.

Gary's feeling pretty good when he and Val get home. Val is concerned that Gary drank at all, and tries to get him to go to bed. Gary accuses Val of talking down to him and becomes belligerent. Val implores him not to, but Gary gets in the car and burns rubber leaving the cul-de-sac. Sid, Karen and Laura all come outside to see what's going on, and Sid tells Val it'll be OK, he's just going to an all-night movie or something. Val says that they don't understand, Gary is an alcoholic.

When the bartender cuts him off, a hooker comes up to Gary and invites him to her place for a drink. The next morning, Sid and Val go looking for Gary and find out about the woman. She tells them she bought the car for $400, and then Gary left to go to a bar. Val and Sid find Gary, who has gotten into a bar brawl and is being arrested.

Ginger has already been suspicious, but Sylvie calls their house looking for Kenny. Sylvie mentions that he left her place a half hour ago. When Kenny arrives home, he lies that he had to see Sylvie to discuss her record that he's getting ready to produce.

Val waits for Gary at the police station and brings him home. Gary is angry with her, and goes in to work after showering. Gary mentions a fleet customer he has a business lunch with, but Sid tries to tell Gary he'll go instead. Gary is offended, so Sid backs off. At the lunch, Gary at first resists the temptation to drink, but eventually does.

Gary comes back from his business lunch, slightly drunk, and Sid tries to get him to take it easy. Gary takes offense and says that having a martini at lunch is not a crime. They argue and Gary storms out, heading for the nearest bar. When Sid arrives home from work later, Gary hasn't come home.

Gary is approached by several young men at night, and is ready to fight them when they ask him for his money. He takes his jacket off and lays it down, but one of them picks it up and takes the wallet out of it. Gary doesn't notice that his wallet is gone until later.

Gary asks for bourbon, but then realizes that he doesn't have his wallet anymore. He pulls some change out of his pocket, which the store clerk says will get him some wine. Gary says he'll sign for the bourbon, and tries to give the man his watch in exchange for the booze. Desperate, Gary grabs the bottle of bourbon, but the man puts a gun in Gary's face and tells him to take the wine or his money, but just leave.

They know where Gary's wallet was found, and Val has made a list of the bars where Gary went previously. Karen, Val and Sid are leaving to go look for Gary, but when Karen asks if he's coming along, Richard says if they find Gary to call him. After Laura questions why Richard isn't going to search, all of his excuses get him a look from Laura which says he should go and help.

After waking up feeling pretty bad, Gary steals a partial bottle of booze from a bum who was sleeping under the pier at the beach where Gary was.
