Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Several different directors worked on this show, including Joss Whedon, the creator. Which of these episodes was not directed by Joss?

Answer: "The Message"

Joss directed all of these except "The Message," which was directed by Tim Minear. However, Joss did co-write this episode with Tim.
2. One of the greatest things about the "Firefly" cast is how well they gelled together, despite the differences in their ages. Which of these cast members is the oldest?

Answer: Gina Torres

Of these four, Gina is the oldest, having been born in 1969. Both Nathan and Alan were born in 1971, and Sean was born in 1975. Of course, Ron Glass is the oldest in the cast, born in 1945, and Jewel Staite is the youngest, born in 1982.
3. The music in "Firefly" mixes country, eastern, and traditional orchestral genres to create a unique, wonderful sound. Who scored the show?

Answer: Greg Edmonson

David Newman scored the feature film, "Serenity," but Greg Edmonson wrote music for the television show, except for the theme song, which was written by Joss. Christophe Beck was one of the composers on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."
4. There is one easter egg (hidden feature) on the Region 1 "Firefly" DVD set. What is it?

Answer: Adam Baldwin singing "The Hero of Canton"

Adam has said that "Jaynestown" is his favorite episode, and he loves the song "The Hero of Canton." This hidden extra is on the fourth DVD. From the "Special Features" section, highlight "Joss Sings the Firefly Theme," then press the left arrow. You'll be treated to a video of Adam, in a very cunning hat, singing a full version of the song.
5. Though the episodes were written with a specific order in mind, they were, unfortunately, aired out of order when they were originally shown in the United States. Of these four episodes, which actually aired first?

Answer: "Our Mrs. Reynolds"

"Safe" was originally intended to air before all of these episodes, but it was broadcast as the last of this sequence. Of these four, "Our Mrs. Reynolds" aired first, on October 4, 2002. This was followed by "Jaynestown" on the 18th, "Out of Gas" on the 25th, and finally "Safe" on November 8.
6. The commentary on the Region 1 DVD release on several of the episodes is full of interesting information. In the "Serenity" commentary, Joss mentions that at one point he was planning to separate the "bad" guys from the "good" guys with a specific costume choice (though this didn't carry through the series). What was it?

Answer: the bad guys would wear hats

Joss says his original idea was to have bad guys always wear hats. In the pilot episode, this is often the case, as Alliance officers, Badger, and Patience all wear hats. However, in one scene, Wash is also seen in a hat, which either raises some interesting questions or marks the spot at which Joss realized this idea wasn't going to work out.
7. There were several different writers for "Firefly" episodes. Joss Whedon wrote several himself. Which of these episodes was not written by Joss?

Answer: "Heart of Gold"

Joss wrote all of these episodes except for "Heart of Gold," which was written by Brett Matthews.
8. Who sings the show's theme song?

Answer: Sonny Rhodes

All four of these men are blues singers, but Sonny Rhodes is the one who sings the "Firefly" theme song. However, if you have the Region 1 DVD, check out the commentary done by Nathan Fillion. He likes to sing along.
9. One of the extras included on the "Firefly" Region 1 DVD set is Alan Tudyk's audition. What scene from the pilot episode "Serenity" did he audition with?

Answer: playing with dinosaurs

There's a tape of Alan doing his very first scene from the show, which is him playing with dinosaurs. It's a very funny scene, and his audition is nearly as good as his final version. In "Serenity," he plays with dinosaurs, out-flies Reavers, and has a great discussion with Zoe, but he doesn't go on a heist with Mal until the episode called "War Stories."
10. Which actor is never seen making a mistake in either the gag reel included on the Region 1 DVDs or the extended gag reel?

Answer: Ron Glass

Ron Glass is never seen messing up in either version of the gag reel. Incidentally, neither is Summer Glau. Summer was well-known for never messing up, so the rest of the cast and crew started blaming her whenever they made a mistake. This carried over into the feature film "Serenity," where, on the Region 1 DVD, there is a whole section of bloopers featuring the cast blaming her for their mistakes.
