Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the title of the theme song to "Freaks and Geeks"?

Answer: Bad Reputation

Originally released on Joan Jett's album "Bad Reputation" in 1981, the song "Bad Reputation" was re-released by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts as a single in 1983.
2. In the pilot episode, the school holds their Homecoming Dance, which Lindsay and Sam attend. What song is playing at the end when Sam and Cindy, and Lindsay and Eli dance?

Answer: Come Sail Away

Sam is there to collect the dance Cindy Sanders promised him when she declined his invitation because she already had a date. The beginning of the song is slow (Sam was planning on a slow dance), but by the time Sam leads Cindy to the other side of the dance floor, the music has become faster. Lindsay is at the dance because it was her punishment from Mr. Rosso for skipping school.

After Mr. Rosso makes Lindsay realize that if being made to go to the dance is the worst thing to happen to her, then she's doing alright, Lindsay stops pouting and asks Eli to dance with her. "Come Sail Away" is from "Grand Illusion", by Styx.

Other songs played in this episode are "Runnin' With the Devil", "Renegade" and "I'm Alright".
3. Her parents being out of town is an opportune time for a kegger at Lindsay's house, in the episode "Beers and Weirs". Strait-laced Millie comes to the party, but says she is going to have more fun than anybody and she's not going to drink. During a break in the music, Millie begins singing and accompanying herself on the piano. What song does she sing?

Answer: Jesus Is Just Alright

Millie had been part of the McKinley High Sober Students group who had performed at the assembly on the evils of drinking and driving. Nick joins in with Millie singing the song. Another version of "Jesus Is Just Alright" is by the Doobie Brothers from their "Toulouse Street" album.
4. In "Tricks and Treats", Sam, Neal and Bill decide to go trick-or-treating one last time. As they are getting into their costumes (and makeup) to go out, the song "Gonna Raise Hell" is playing. It is also playing a little later when Lindsay is riding around in Daniel's uncle's car with Nick, Ken and Kim. Who sings "Gonna Raise Hell"?

Answer: Cheap Trick

The scene where Lindsay attempts to smash a pumpkin and gets her foot caught in it is hilarious. "Gonna Raise Hell" is from Cheap Trick's "Dream Police" album. Other songs from the episode include "Monster Mash", sung by Mrs. Weir, "Roller" by April Wine, and "Free-for-all", by Ted Nugent.
5. In the episode, "I'm With The Band", Sam is forced to go to his locker to retrieve some clothing during gym class because Alan has taken his towel and won't let him back in to the locker room. Just as he gets to his locker, the bell rings, prompting a mad dash to get back to the gym. What song plays while Sam, with his blue dot, is running through the halls?

Answer: One Step Beyond

After hearing about the new rule that students must shower after gym class, Sam tries different ways to get out of it because he doesn't want the other guys to see him naked. After his parents convince him he should be proud of his body, he decides he's going to take a shower.

But his own personal bully Alan has other plans and locks him outside of the locker room wearing only a towel. To add insult to injury, Alan then reaches out the door and takes Sam's towel. Sam manages to avoid Cindy in the hallways, but everyone hears about him streaking and thinks he's cool. "One Step Beyond" is by Madness from their album of the same name.
6. In "Carded and Discarded", Nick, Daniel, Lindsay and Ken go in to a clothing store at the mall to talk to Howie Gelfand about getting fake IDs. Sam and Bill go in to the same clothing store in "Looks and Books" when Sam buys his Parisian night suit. The same song is playing in both episodes during the scenes at the store. What song by the Brothers Johnson is this?

Answer: Stomp!

The Brothers Johnson had a #7 hit in 1980 with "Stomp!". Other songs included in these two episodes were "18" and "American Band", sung by Mr. Rosso and Feedback, "Don't Ask Me Why", "Slip Kid" and "Take the Long Way Home".
7. In "Girlfriends and Boyfriends", Sam gets upset when Bill gets partnered with Cindy Sanders in biology class and gets to go to her house. The next day, Cindy goes to Bill's house to work on their project. When Sam walks despondently by and sees Bill and Cindy having fun, "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" is playing. This song is sung by Journey.

Answer: True

Sam thinks that Cindy and Bill like each other. Gordon advises Sam to join Cindy's afterschool activities to spend more time with her. After the yearbook meeting, Sam and Cindy go out to sell yearbook ads together. Journey made it to #16 on the U.S. pop charts in 1979 with "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin".
8. Sam is selected as the new school mascot, but gets upset seeing Cindy and Todd together before the basketball game and doesn't want to participate, in "We've Got Spirit". Since Neal wanted to be the mascot anyway, he dresses in the costume and goes out to do the comedy routine he thinks the Norseman should be doing. What song is playing when the Norseman is in the stands doing his schtick?

Answer: Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)

Another great song by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, "Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)" peaked at #20 in 1982. The head cheerleader, Vicki Appleby, is not amused by Neal's hijinks and punches him in his Norseman face after he messes up the funky chicken.

When she goes to fetch him from the stands, she gives him a kick in the butt to which he responds with, "Thank you, sir. May I have another?".
9. In "The Diary", Bill is upset about being the last one chosen for teams in gym class. Gordon, Neal, Sam and Bill are the last four remaining to be chosen for teams, and Coach Fredricks tells the captains to divvy them up. "No Language in Our Lungs" is playing as we see the last four being chosen. Who sings this song?

Answer: XTC

Poor Bill. Sam is chosen first, followed by Gordon. Neal is then chosen, leaving Bill as the last. "No Language in our Lungs" is from XTC's "Black Sea" album.
10. In the episode "Looks and Books", Sam has just bought a new Parisian night suit, with Bill's help, and is posing with it in front of the mirror in his bedroom. What song is playing?

Answer: Flamethrower

Sam is practicing what he'll say to Cindy to sound cool since he's going to look cool in his new clothes. Sam thinks if he changes his hair and clothing he can win Cindy. Unfortunately, he chooses poorly in the clothing department. When Neal sees the Parisian night suit at school, he tells Sam that it's a jumpsuit, and instead of looking cool, everyone ridicules Sam. "Flamethrower" is by J. Geils Band, from their "Freeze Frame" album.
11. After Neal finds out that Sam saw his dad with a woman at the mall, he looks in his father's car and finds a second garage door opener. Neal asks Sam and Bill to ride around with him trying to find where the opener belongs, in "The Garage Door". When the guys first start riding around, "Good Times Roll" plays. Who sings the song?

Answer: The Cars

Bill and Sam eventually say they have to go home, angering Neal, who wants to keep going until he finds the garage which the opener operates. Neal's perseverance finally pays off, and a garage opens up revealing his father's car. From the Cars' self-titled album, "Good Times Roll" peaked at #41 in 1979.
12. Lindsay isn't quite herself when she has to go on a babysitting job so she asks Millie to help her in "Chokin' and Tokin'". After Lindsay finishes freaking out, Millie puts on some music while they're talking. What song does she play?

Answer: Baby, Don't Get Hooked on Me

Nick gets upset because Lindsay is judging him in "Chokin and Tokin", so he says he doesn't need pot and gives it to her. After she gets home, she tries some of it, but by the time her dad reminds her she's supposed to babysit, she's pretty wasted. Millie takes care of the kid and then takes care of Lindsay.

When Millie puts the 8-track tape on, Lindsay talks about how they used to love the song and Mac Davis. "Baby, Don't Get Hooked on Me" was a #1 hit for Mac Davis in 1972.
13. "Dead Dogs and Gym Teachers", involves Lindsay wanting to go to a Who concert with her freak friends. After Lindsay asks her father if she can go, he says he'll listen to the Who's album first and then decide. Which song do Mr. and Mrs. Weir listen to?

Answer: Squeeze Box

The Weirs sit down and begin listening to "Squeeze Box". At first, Harold says it's kind of catchy, but once they start singing, he's thinking it's filthy and Jean is telling him it's about an accordion. At first they tell Lindsay she can't go to the concert, but after Lindsay explains that Millie is going and she wants to keep an eye on her, they allow her to go. Millie and Lindsay end up staying home after Millie finds out that Kim killed her dog.
14. Sam's dream finally comes true and he gets to go out with Cindy in the episode, "Smooching and Mooching". As Sam, Neal and Bill are preparing for the makeout party where Sam is to meet Cindy, what song is playing?

Answer: Katmandu

Bill is shown brushing his teeth, Sam is trying to find something to wear (he even pulls out his Parisian night suit), and Neal is practicing his moves with the help of his ventriloquist figure, Morty. "Katmandu" is from Bob Seger's "Beautiful Loser" album. The song reached #43 on the U.S. pop charts in 1975.
15. The final episode, "Discos and Dragons", ends with Lindsay leaving for the academic summit at the University of Michigan, but she gets off of the bus in Ann Arbor to meet Kim and their Deadhead friends. What group sang the song that was playing as they drove away?

Answer: Grateful Dead

The song was "Ripple" from the Grateful Dead's "American Beauty" album. Lindsay was stressing out over the academic summit she had been chosen for and wasn't sure if she wanted to go, so Jeff Rosso loaned her his "American Beauty" album to help her figure things out.

While carrying the album in the cafeteria, she met the Deadheads who she and Kim were going to spend some time traveling with over the summer. The song Lindsay danced to in her bedroom was "Box of Rain", also from the "American Beauty" album.
