Will introduces the Glee Club to their consultant, Jesse St. James, and only Rachel seems excited to have him onboard; everyone else doesn't trust him after last year. Both Will and Jesse agree that this year the kids should continue with the trend of original songs and that one will be a duet (to start) and another will be a group number. Jesse also thinks that they should take the Vocal Adrenaline model of success and frame the entire setlist around their star performer though it's clear that Finn thinks this goes against the grain of New Directions. Sue is furious about New Directions being able to get to Nationals and she has Terri (the Honey Badger) try to screw up their flight itineraries.

She brings Howard (who Sue nicknames 'Panda Express') and they break into Figgins' email account to change the layover from Chicago to Tripoli, Libya. Terri says that Sue must have woken up on the wrong side of the bed if she wants the Glee Club dead and Sue says she has no idea.

Walking through the halls, Will is approached by Becky and her mother who take him aside to ask if Becky can join the New Directions. Will says that unfortunately, they're only a week away from Nationals but he would love for her to join next year. Apparently, Sue kicked Becky off the Cheerios without warning or reason.
Will heads to the staff lounge to talk to Sue who openly states that she let Becky go because she reminds her of her sister. This is an issue because Sue's sister, Jean, passed away the previous day after catching pneumonia. She asks Will to leave her alone and he does.

Rachel finds the Nationals lead sign-up sheet in the hall and becomes the fourth member of the New Directions to sign up for the lead part. When Finn passes by she asks why his name isn't on the sheet and he states that despite the fact that he's been working hard for two years, Jesse came in and ruined his confidence. Rachel states that he's the male lead and he's excellent at what he does, but he says that he's "Lima good, not New York good". At Will's place, Emma helps him pack up for New York.

He persists that he'll be back by the end of summer vacation, after April's show on Broadway, and that the kids won't even need to know. She says that he's not being true to himself and following his dreams but he thinks she's overreacting a bit.

Kurt and Finn stop by Sue's office to offer their assistance if she needs anything; both of them know what it's like to lose family members close to them. She asks them why they would even consider helping her and why she's still around but not her sister. Most importantly, she doesn't know how to handle things. Kurt and Finn head back to the choir room and suggest that they support Sue by organizing and performing at her sister's service. Jesse is against this idea since Vocal Adrenaline is probably doing twenty-four hour rehearsals for Nationals, but Finn takes charge and becomes a leader to tell him that they will be doing the service no matter what. Will tells Sue that he's glad she accepted the Glee Club's offer to help her out. Sue says that they volunteered and Kurt and Finn said they'd help her clean out Jean's room at the nursing home.

She also likes using New Directions members for unpaid labour.

Will is nervous about forcing the kids to perform auditions for a lead role at Nationals because he doesn't want to make any of them feel like losers but Jesse insists that this is the way it needs to be. Besides, he took a university course about reality TV judging and he wants to put it to use.
Santana is the first to perform her solo, "Back to Black" by Amy Winehouse. While she puts a lot into the performance, it's clear that Jesse cares very little for her performance. He thanks her for coming and she's angered at his lack of feedback. Will notices he simply spent the whole audition drawing a cat in his notebook.
Kurt is next to the stage and he sings "Some People" from "Gypsy". Again, Jesse is a bit harsh in his review and seems to care quite little for the whole process.

Kurt comes back to the choir room to complain about Jesse's rude critique of his song and those auditioning state that Rachel is letting her repeated feelings for Jesse get in the way of her judgment. Santana is still confident about her song as Mercedes takes the stage to sing Otis Redding's "Try a Little Tenderness". Before the audition she's confident enough to say she's wrapping the whole competition up.

After, Jesse says that she's not a star and she doesn't want it badly enough. Will thinks she's ready but Jesse doesn't. Rachel is next to hit the stage and she performs what she says is the most difficult song she's ever done: Barbra Streisand's "My Man" from "Funny Girl". Even before she begins, Jesse seems a bit excited.

In the audience, Mercedes, Kurt, and Santana realize she's the clear favourite. Kurt gives her a standing ovation. Jesse praises her and Will says they'll know the results by Friday.

He gets the final call; not Jesse.

At the nursing home, Sue, Kurt, and Finn go through Jean's things together and Sue is clearly hesitant about the choices they're making to retain some of her belongings for the memories. Finding items like pom-poms, stuffed animals, and a copy of "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory", they organize them but she tells them to throw everything out since she already has memories of her sister.

After insulting them, Kurt asks why she even allowed the Glee Club to organize the service and Sue admits it was because Jean didn't know many people; she wanted to fill seats at the funeral home. Will stops Sue in the lobby when she arrives.

It turns out, it was a full house regardless.

When Sue arrives in the funeral room, she discovers that Kurt and Finn captured the happiness of Jean's life by theming it around her favourite film, "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory". Sue says it's perfect. When it comes time for the eulogy, Sue comes up to say a few words but finds herself stumbling over her own thoughts. Will comes up to the podium to finish her speech.
To remember Jean, the Glee Club rises to perform her favourite song, "Pure Imagination", while a photo montage plays on a nearby screen. Sue, clearly affected by the number, holds Will's hand while the kids sing.
After the funeral, Quinn and Finn hop into Finn's truck to head home and she states her pride in him for building up the funeral. Finn starts to cry because he's breaking up with her; he can't get over what happened last year and he still loves Rachel. Quinn says she can get over his confusion with Rachel but Finn say that he doesn't feel the same way as she does.

Speaking with Jesse, Will is still not convinced that picking a 'favourite' for Nationals will secure their victory against Vocal Adrenaline and others in New York. Jesse, on the other hand, says it's the only option and that the kids will need harsh truth going into this thing to set it all right. He also believes that Rachel is the only option.
In Sue's office, Becky comes by to hand in her pom-poms and megaphone. Sue blames her hormones (and the subsequent "womb rage") for Becky's firing and she tells her that she's not going anywhere. In fact, Becky is being made next year's Cheerios captain. Becky is ecstatic about this and Sue gives her a hug before she calls her mother with the good news.
Sue speaks to Will one-on-one about everything that's happened. She's decided to say 'good luck'. She's spent a lot of time hating New Directions, but after the funeral she just can't do it anymore. Will has a pure heart and he's a good friend so she'll no longer be attacking Glee; instead she'll be running for the U.S. House of Representatives. Sue wants to do this because her new political party will fight for the better healthcare her sister deserved before her passing. Sue also admits that she rerouted the Glee Club's plane to Libya.

Terri explains the plane situation and says that she complained that she got monkey pox in one of the airline's bathrooms (a lie). Of course, she also says that the head of the airlines was a big supporter of the arts so she got everyone first-class tickets to New York. Will thinks there's a catch, but Terri says she's moving to Miami; Sheets 'N' Things offered her a management position at a new store down south so she took the job. Both of them express their friendship for one another and state that they have no regrets.
Emma says her goodbyes to Will as well and hopes that he follows his dreams and stays on Broadway. She comes to school wearing one of his old vests to remember him and Will tells her he'll be coming back.
Jesse talks to Rachel in the auditorium and says that due to his influence, she'll be the star at Nationals, much to her delight. She is, however, a bit disappointed since she wants the team to be happy. He tells her that he came back to support her because he still has feelings for her; Finn watches their conversation from the top row of the audience, disappointed because he planned to reunite with her.
Instead of posting a winner on the bulletin board, Will calls for an urgent meeting in the choir room where he tells the Glee Club that there will be no 'star performer' because they're going back to the original plan: original songs performed by the entire group. There's too much in-fighting and not enough teamwork with Jesse's methods. He tells them they need to get two songs ready for New York.
Finn thanks Quinn for not quitting Glee Club after their break-up and he's glad she's taking it so well. She states that she couldn't quit Glee Club, especially with her plans in New York...though she doesn't mention what those plans are.
