Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is Magnus Pompey married to when the series begins?

Answer: Julius Caesar's daughter, Julia

Caesar's daughter dies in childbirth in the opening scene of "Rome", leaving Pompey a widower. Eager to keep good relations intact, Caesar tries to find Pompey another wife and Caesar's niece, Atia, offers her daughter, Octavia, to him. Octavia is less than thrilled with this arrangement since she is in love with another man. Pompey eventually realizes that his marrying a relative of Caesar would be politically beneficial only to Caesar, so Pompey chooses another wife not of relation to Caesar or Atia.
2. Why does Servillia curse Atia?

Answer: Atia interfered with Servillia's affair with Caesar

In episode five, "The Ram Has Touched The Wall", Atia thinks that her son, Octavian, has become lovers with Caesar. She also knows that Caesar has been carrying on a long-time affair with Servillia of the Junii and deeply loves her. Because Atia doesn't want to risk her son's status in Caesar's eyes, she launches a smear campaign around Rome with obscene graffiti depicting Caesar and Servillia together.

Caesar's wife becomes enraged when she sees this graffiti and demands Caesar stop seeing Servillia. When Caesar meets with Servillia to end their relationship, things get heated and Caesar strikes her. Servillia is both ashamed and angry and puts a curse on Atia and Caesar.
3. When Lucius Vorenus returns home from 8 years away with the army, what does he discover?

Answer: his daughter had a baby

Lucius sees his wife Niobe holding an infant and immediately thinks it is hers. However, she tells him that the child is his grandson and that his daughter, Vorena the Elder, fell in love with a young man and wishes to marry him now that they have a child.

We find out later that the child is in fact Niobe's and while Vorenus was away and believed to be dead, she had an affair with her sister's husband, Evander.
4. Atia wants to make sure that her son, Octavian, is a capable lover and soldier. Whom does she recruit to mentor Octavian?

Answer: Pullo

Pullo is one of the toughest soldiers of the 13th Legion and he also helped return Octavian to Atia when he was captured at a very young age. So Pullo takes Octavian to a brothel and also spends time with him, teaching him to sword fight. When Pullo finds out about Niobe's affair with her sister's husband, Evander, he and Octavian beat and murder Evander in order to spare Vorenus the shame of knowing the truth.

After this, Pullo and Octavian become friends of sorts and later, when Octavian grows up and becomes Caesar, he gives Pullo every consideration and kindness.
5. At the start of season two, who has fathered Caesarion, Cleopatra's son?

Answer: we don't know for sure

Did this one trip you up? Let's look at the time line. On the road back to Egypt, Cleopatra feels amorous and requests Vorenus to satisfy her. But he refuses so Pullo and Cleopatra become lovers just once. Then, days later, Cleopatra seduces Caesar hoping to produce an heir. Nine months later, Cleopatra and Caesar present a son to the Legions. Although Cleopatra presents the child as Caesar's rightful heir, we are led to believe that the child is in fact Pullo's...but at this point, we do not know for sure.

It is only in the last episodes of the season that Pullo is the confirmed father.
6. Who tells Atia that Caesar was going to be killed?

Answer: Servillia

In the final episode of season one "Kalends of February", Servillia invites Atia to her home where she informs her that Caesar is going to be killed in the Senate. Servillia also warns Atia that she will make Atia suffer as Atia made her suffer. Atia leaves Servillia's home stunned with Octavian at her side. Atia now fears for her safety and contemplates fleeing Rome.
7. Why does Octavian leave Rome after Caesar's death?

Answer: Antony beats him

Octavian is named as Julius Caesar's only heir. Octavian takes this responsibility very seriously and vows to follow Caesar's will to the letter, including giving each Roman citizen money. Antony is upset that Caesar didn't name his as his heir and when Octavian tries to work with Antony to follow Caesar's wishes, Antony pushes the boy aside. Octavian decides to take matters into his own hands and sells his family's fortune to pay the citizens. When Atia and Antony find this out, they are enraged and Antony beats Octavian violently.

Octavian decides to leave Rome, to build up an army of his own and return one day as the rightful Caesar.
8. Which god/goddess does Vorenus desecrate during negotiations with the mob bosses of the Aventine?

Answer: Concordia

Vorenus's wife kills herself and his children are taken from him. He turns to rage and violence and as the new boss of the Aventine, as decreed by Mark Antony, he demands the other mob bosses allegiance. To prove that his isn't someone to be questioned, he destroys the statue of Concordia, the goddess of peace and harmony. Pullo fears that his friend has angered the gods as Vorenus now considers himself a son of Hades.
9. Who betrays Antony during the Senate meeting in which Antony requests to be made the Governor of Gaul?

Answer: Cicero

Antony plans to leave Rome and retire to Macedonia when his consulship is over. However, Atia convinces him the Macedonia is an awful place with horrid weather and crude citizens. So, Antony tries to bribe/scare Cicero into sponsoring his governorship of Gaul instead. Cicero agrees, but when Antony arrives for the Senate meeting, Cicero is absent. Cicero has however left a scroll to be read to the Senate which describes Antony as a terrible leader, claiming he brought upon Rome "war, pestilence and destruction" and that he does not support Antony at all. Antony is furious that Cicero betrayed him and vows vengeance.
10. Who rescues Servillia from Atia's torture?

Answer: Timon

Servillia had plotted to poison Atia but her plan is foiled when Atia's slave dies instead of her. When Atia finds out that Servillia is responsible, she has her men capture her and torture her. However, after hours of brutal violence, Atia's man, Timon, can take it no more.

He releases Servillia's bound hands and helps her out of the house. He proclaims to Atia "I am not an animal" and vows never again to work for Atia or do her dirty work.
