Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From what group of organized lawmen did the Lone Ranger come?

Answer: Texas Rangers

The Lone Ranger was the only surviving Texas Ranger from an ambush set up by the Cavendish gang, therefore making him a lone ranger. Six rangers were shot, and six graves dug, so everyone would think he had been killed. Good thing Tonto came along to nurse the wounded ranger to health or all those graves would have been filled.
2. Tonto, The Lone Ranger's trusted Indian companion, found The Lone Ranger in a canyon, wounded, nearly dead from an ambush. Why had Tonto come to the canyon?

Answer: he was hunting

Tonto came riding into the canyon because he was hunting, when he came across the ambushed Texas Rangers. The wounded ranger's name was Reid, who became The Lone Ranger.
3. As Tonto examined the wounded man, he exclaimed "You are Kemo Sabe". How did Tonto know this man was Kemo Sabe?

Answer: he was wearing a necklace that had once been Tonto's ring

Apparently, as the storyline goes, Tonto's family had been all killed when he was a boy. The Lone Ranger, also a boy at the time, discovered them and nursed Tonto back to health. Tonto gave him his ring as a token of friendship. The Lone Ranger had taken it and wore it as a necklace.

As for the meaning of Kemo Sabe? Tonto said, "You are Kemo Sabe--trusted scout". Although later Kemo Sabe came to be also known as "trusted friend".
4. The Lone Ranger once he was nursed to health decided to avenge the deaths of the rangers. He would wear a disguise so the outlaws would not know his identity. From what was the mask made?

Answer: the vest of The Lone Ranger's dead brother

The auidence never got a good look at The Lone Ranger's face since it was covered partly with a bandana as his face healed from a wound received in the ambush. There were a lot of side shots until Tonto suggests the disguise be a mask, and The Lone Ranger wants it made from his brother's vest. He considered his dead brother to have been "one of the bravest men he had known".
5. The Lone Ranger vows he will bring in 100 lawbreakers for every member of the gang who ambushed him and his men. He also vows when he finds these lawbreakers he will shoot to ____.

Answer: wound

The Lone Ranger vows he will shoot to wound not to kill because he wants the law to decide the fate of the lawbreakers. His intent was to stop them in their tracks and bring them to justice.
6. The Lone Ranger had a disguise, a faithful companion, and now he needed a horse. He found one, but it was about to be attacked by what animal?

Answer: a buffalo

Really, it was a buffalo. He and Tonto shot the charging buffalo and then nursed the wounded horse back to health. When it recovered The Lone Ranger released it, saying it should be free if it wanted its freedom, but it stuck around. Tonto said it was a beautiful horse, like silver white on a mountain with snow. That's how Silver got his name. Tonto is now credited with both the disguise and The Lone Ranger's horse.
7. Now we move on to the silver bullets. Why did The Lone Ranger choose silver bullets as his signature symbol?

Answer: they stood for justice

The Lone Ranger and Tonto looked up a former ranger, who ended up working a silver mine The Lone Ranger held interest in. The ranger worked the mine and kept the findings so as long as he supplied enough silver for The Lone Ranger's bullets. The Lone Ranger said the silver bullets were a symbol of justice by law.
8. On the show, the actors were known as The Lone Ranger and Tonto. What were the names of the actors who played them?

Answer: Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels

Clayton Moore was replaced by John Hart for one season during the television series, due to a dispute Moore had with his contract. Jay Silverheels played Tonto through the length of the television series.
9. We know The Lone Ranger's horse was Silver, but what was Tonto's horse called?

Answer: Scout

Silver and Scout appeared to have gotten along quite well, but the truth of the matter is that they tended to nip at one another if they stood too close. The solution was to have the actors sit on saddles placed on sawhorses for any dialog that called for side by side interaction on Scout and Silver.
10. What was the name of the famous piece of music used to open and close the show?

Answer: "The William Tell Overture"

Yes, who can forget that famous overture? As far as William Tell goes, there is some dispute as to whether he really existed or not. He might have been a compilation of legends and stories, much like Robin Hood and King Arthur. No matter if William Tell was real or not, he sure had a decent theme song.
