Detective Kellerman fired the fatal shot that ended the life of Luther Mahoney, the most infamous villain in the show's history. Detectives Lewis and Stivers were also present during the shooting but Detective Crosetti had committed suicide years before this incident.

Detective Kellerman was forced to quit the department because of his unjustifiable shooting of Luther Mahoney. Detectives Kellerman, Lewis and Stivers all falsified their reports to make the shooting look justified and Kellerman agreed to quit without a fight so that Lewis and Stivers would not also lose their jobs. Kellerman went to work for himself as a private investigator and even returned to the series for a two part episode in season seven.

Megan Russert joined the homicide unit as a shift Lieutenant running the shift opposite Lt. Giardello. She was later promoted to Captain overseeing the homicide unit and then later demoted all the way back to detective after her mishandling of an important case.

Nathaniel Lee Mahoney, or Junior Bunk, was Luther Mahoney's nephew and Georgia Rae Mahoney's son. He was the hit man ordered by Georgia Rae Mahoney to kill Detectives Kellerman, Stivers and Lewis in retaliation for killing Luther. He was later arrested by Detective Pembleton for killing a judge.

While in custody he sparked a squad room shootout that ended in his death as well as the death of two uniform officers and the wounding of Detectives Gharty and Ballard.
