Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In a stark, bleak dystopian future, Romney Wordsworth (Burgess Meredith) is sentenced to death since his profession no longer affords any benefit to society. What is his profession?

Answer: He is a librarian.

The chancellor tells Wordsworth, "You have no function, Mr. Wordsworth, you're an anachronism, like a ghost from another time." Romney is allowed to choose the method of his own execution. He chooses to be blown up by a bomb in his room while cameras are recording the event. Romney invites the chancellor to his room for a final conference, knowing full well that the entire session is being televised. Having been locked in the room, the smug, arrogant chancellor transforms into a frightened man in public.

However, showing compassion, Romney lets the chancellor leave the room in disgrace. Rod Serling summarizes the episode as follows: "The chancellor, the late chancellor, was only partly correct. He *was* obsolete. But so is the State, the entity he worshiped. Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the worth, the dignity, the rights of Man, that state is obsolete.

A case to be filed under "M" for Mankind ..."
2. "Portrait of a man who thinks and thereby gets things done. Mr. Jimbo Cobb might be called a prime mover, a talent which has to be seen to be believed." What happens to be Jimbo's particular talent?

Answer: telekinesis

Ace Larsen and his friend Jimbo Cobb (Buddy Ebsen) have been struggling to make ends meet for quite some time. Suddenly, Ace learns that Jimbo has the incredible power of telekinesis. Ace wants to see a demonstration. Jimbo complies by easily manipulating a coin and some dice. Ace immediately wants to travel to Las Vegas in order to take advantage of Jimbo's remarkable skill.

Unfortunately, greed supplants common sense. "Some people possess talent, others are possessed by it. When that happens, the talent becomes a curse."
3. "As must be obvious, this is a house hovered over by Mr. Death, an omnipresent player to the third and final act of every life." Young Bill Bayles (Billy Mumy) is endeared to his grandmother. She gives Bill a gift which allows them to communicate from beyond the grave. What gift does she give Bill?

Answer: a simple toy telephone

Bill loves his grandmother and he is devastated when she passes away. However, she has given Bill an enchanted supernatural toy telephone which allows them to communicate even after the passing of Bill's grandmother. After several communications, Bill decides that he would like to join his grandmother in the afterlife. "A toy telephone, an act of faith, a set of improbable circumstances, all combine to probe a mystery, to fathom a depth, to send a facet of light into a dark after-region, to be believed or disbelieved, depending on your frame of reference."
4. "The time is the space age, the place is a barren landscape of a rock-walled canyon that lies millions of miles from the planet Earth." Peter Craig is an insubordinate subordinate to the commander of a space vehicle. What does Craig discover that feeds his ego and desire to be in command?

Answer: a tiny civilization

Commander William Fletcher (Claude Aikens) is ready to leave the seemingly barren planet. However, Peter Craig has other ideas since he has discovered a civilization of "tiny people" over whom he may rule. The megalomaniacal Peter Craig has an unpleasant surprise in store for him in the ironic twist of an ending. "The case of navigator Peter Craig, a victim of a delusion.

In this case, the dream dies a little harder than the man."
5. "Her name is the Arrow One. She represents four and a half years of planning, preparation, and training, and a thousand years of science and mathematics, and the projected dreams and hopes of not only a nation but the world. She is the first manned aircraft into space. And this is the countdown, the last five seconds before man shot an arrow into the air." The ship malfunctions and there is a crash landing. Where have the unfortunate astronauts landed?

Answer: Earth

Resources are scarce on the desolate landscape upon which the astronauts have landed. There is a mortal battle for survival. In an effort to survive, Corey disposes of the other astronauts. Much to his chagrin, Corey discovers that he is still on Earth in the Nevada desert. "Practical joke perpetuated by Mother Nature and a combination of improbable events. Practical joke wearing the trappings of nightmare, of terror, of desperation. Small human drama played out in a desert ninety-seven miles from Reno, Nevada, U.S.A., continent of North America, the Earth..."
6. "The residence of Dr. William Loren, which is in reality a menagerie for machines." Jana (Inger Stevens) is quite upset with the creations of her father. Ironically, there is something unique about Jana. What is it?

Answer: Jana is an android.

Despite Jana's petulance and defiance, Jana's parents must finally reveal a long-held secret about Jana. She is in fact an android, too. "Let this be the postscript, should you be worn out by the rigors of competing in a very competitive world, if you're distraught from having to share your existence with the noises and neurosises of the twentieth century, if you crave serenity but want it full time and with no string attached, get yourself a workroom in a basement, and then drop a note to Dr. and Mrs. William Loren.

They're a childless couple who made comfort a life's work, and maybe there are a few do-it-yourself pamphlets still available."
7. The accompanying photo is entitled "Don't Listen to the Liar", by Gauguin. Somset Frisby (Andy Devine) has a particular penchant for stretching the truth and grand self-promotion. Accordingly, Mr. Frisby attracts some unwanted attention from whom?

Answer: creatures from another planet

Frisby has been invited aboard the alien spacecraft so that the aliens may study Mr. Frisby. Upon realizing this, Frisby finally confesses that he is, "the gol-darnedest liar that ever hit the pike. I spin the biggest yarns west of the Rockies." Frisby escapes from the aliens by simply playing his harmonica.

He is greeted with a surprise birthday party on his return home. He tries to tell the others what really happened, but naturally no one believes him. "Mr. Somset Frisby, who might have profited by reading an Aesop fable about a boy who cried wolf."
8. Sam Forstmann (Ed Wynn) believes that his life will end when a particular device stops working. What is this device?

Answer: a grandfather clock

"Clocks are made by men, God creates time. No man can prolong his allotted hours, he can only live them to the fullest." As it turns out, there is no relationship between the clock and Mr. Forstmann's life span.
9. "Portrait of a TV fan. Name: Joe Britt. Occupation: cab driver. Tonight, Mr. Britt is going to watch "a really big show," something special for the cabbie who's seen everything." Complete the title of this episode: "What's in the ___?"

Answer: box

Joe Britt (William Demarest) is unhappy in his marriage with his wife, Phyllis. A mysterious television repairman (Sterling Holloway) fixes Joe's television free of charge. Joe is pleased until the details of his infidelity are broadcast on television. Further, Joe witnesses his own execution on television for the murder of his wife. "The next time your TV set is on the blink, when you're in the need of a first-rate repairman, may we suggest our own specialist?"
10. Three mysterious strangers arrive in a nondescript town. They are from a distant planet in need of a new planet to colonize. How do they plan to accomplish this mission?

Answer: They will poison the water supply.

The title of this episode is "Black Leather Jackets". One of the brothers has formed an emotional attachment with one of local inhabitants. He tries to warn a family, but his efforts are impeded by the invading force which has already infiltrated the population. "Portrait of an American family on the eve of invasion from outer space. Of course, we know it's merely fiction - and yet , think twice when you drink your next glass of water."
