Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did Minerva grow up?

Answer: on a farm

At the beginning of the movie, as she is a little girl, then a young teenager, it shows the farm. Then throughout the whole movie, it shows it. She is there sometimes, in the city at other times, and eventually in prison.
2. What actor/actress narrates this story?

Answer: Salma Hayek

Salma Hayek takes on a completely astonishing turn in character when she plays the 'get what I want' girl. The character that Salma Hayek plays, Minerva Mirabel, is a girl who sets her mind on what she wants and gets it, she tries to end Trujillo's whole 'kill anyone who opposes me' rule.
3. Who wrote the book that this movie is based on?

Answer: Julia Alvarez

At the end of the movie, it states that this movie is based on the book by Julia Alvarez. I've never read the book, but would very much like to. I am very glad that it was decided to make a movie. Actually, to my surprise, I found that Julia Alvarez was not only alive when this happened, but in the same country.

She was born in New Nork, but her parents decided to return to their homeland, preferring the dictatorship of Trujillo to the US.
4. What sort of transportation does Minerva take to go off to school?

Answer: train

You see the girls saying their goodbyes from the train window.
5. What was the president's name?

Answer: Trujillo

Trujillo, in my opinion, was the worst man ever-- he was very cruel, but he had smart and clever ways to get what he wanted. He had his own rules and anyone who who went against anything he said, was imprisoned, tortured, and even killed.
6. Who does Salma Hayek play?

Answer: Minerva Mirabal

Like I said earlier, Salma Hayek is incredible as Minerva Mirabal. She grew up on a farm, and was dead set on being a lawyer. She went through hell to get rid of Trujillo, and his cruel ways.
7. At the school Minerva and her sisters attended, what color were their uniforms?

Answer: blue and white

Minerva and her sisters went away to school after begging father because they wanted to get a good education and Minerva wanted to go to law school. Their father had the money to send them, like their mother pointed out. He just didn't want them to leave.
8. Who got the nickname Butterfly?

Answer: Minerva

Minerva, of course! And that name set a statement in history, Minerva started a regime, and almost everyone took part in it. Since her code name was Butterfly, their motto was "Long live the Butterflies" or "God bless the Butterflies". Lio gave her this name in the cornfield right before he left, and she never saw him again.
9. What musician plays in this movie?

Answer: Marc Anthony

Marc Anthony plays Lio, a professor whom Minerva met through her cousin. He believed in her, and gave her more willpower and encouragement to go to law school. He had started his own regime, and that is why he left. He told Minerva that he couldn't succeed unless he left the country.
10. When was the president born?

Answer: October 24, 1891

It tells you this when Trujillo visits the school, the professor of the school is giving a speech about the 'awesome' Trujillo. She begins, "On this day, 24th of October..."
